Day One – Departing from Pottsville this morning, you’ll travel south to Virginia, making a rest stop en route. Arriving in Charlottesville, VA mid-day, you’ll have lunch at Historic Michie Tavern. During the late 1700’s, Michie Tavern was the social center of the community and accommodated travelers with food, drink and lodging. Today for lunch you will experience authentic 18th century fare in a rustic tavern setting with servers dressed in period attire to attend to your every need. Following lunch, tour the oldest part of the tavern and learn about life of travelers in the late 1700’s. Following lunch, you’ll begin your journey along the Monticello Wine Trail. Winemaking in the United States has its historical roots in Virginia, where this now thriving industry began in 1607. Your first stop is at Carter Mountain Orchard which features some of the best views in Charlottesville. Carter Mountain Orchard has partnered with Prince Michel Vineyard and Winery to produce wines made from Carter Mountain grapes. Sample some of their wines in the wine shop and visit the Carter Mountain Bakery and General Store next door. Leaving Carter Mountain Orchard, you’ll stop at First Colony Winery to sample of some of their exceptional wines. Randolph McElroy, Jr. owner of First Colony Winery is a Virginia native and a direct descendant of ’s Attorney General, Edmund Randolph. Following your visit to First Colony Winery, you will check into your hotel for the next two nights, the Best Western Plus Crossroads Inn & Suites. The evening is at leisure (Lunch)

Day Two – Following a hot breakfast at the hotel, you’ll depart for a day of sightseeing and wine tasting along the Monticello Wine Trail. Your first stop this morning will be Monticello, the 5,000-acre plantation that was the home of Thomas Jefferson, author of the Declaration of Independence, third president of the United States and the founder of the University of Virginia. Monticello is the autobiographical masterpiece of Thomas Jefferson—designed and redesigned and built and rebuilt for more than forty years—and its gardens were a botanic showpiece, a source of food, and an experimental laboratory of ornamental and useful plants from around the world. Enjoy a guided tour of the house and free time to visit the gardens and gift shop on your own. A box lunch is included at the Monticello café. Following lunch, you will continue your exploration of the Monticello Wine Trail with visits and tastings at Keswick Vineyards, Castle Hill Cider and Barboursville Vineyards. Keswick Vineyards is nestled between a vast expanse of horse farms and set in front of a backdrop of the peaks of the Blue Ridge Mountains in the heart of Virginia Wine Country. Keswick Vineyards exemplifies its motto, “Born from the soil and soul of Virginia” from its physical location and the authentic southern hospitality. Originally built in 1764, Castle Hill was the home of Colonel , guardian and mentor to Thomas Jefferson. Castle Hill Cider is now the only cidery in the world fermenting and aging in buried terra cotta amphorae called kvevri. Approximately 20 miles north of Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello, Barboursville was settled as a substantial plantation by Thomas Barbour, in the mid- 1700s, occupying somewhat more than 5 times the estate’s present size of 900-plus acres. The estate house at Barboursville plantation was designed by Thomas Jefferson, one of only 3 residences he designed for his friends. The Barbour family occupied this residence until it was destroyed by fire at Christmas in 1884. The ruins of this mansion can still be seen on the grounds of the winery today. Following your visit to the Barboursville Vineyards, you’ll enjoy a buffet dinner at the Wood Grill Buffet in Charlottesville before returning to your hotel. The remainder of the evening is at leisure. (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner)

Day Three – Following a hot breakfast at the hotel and check-out, you’ll depart the hotel for the University of Virginia. On a student led walking tour, you’ll learn the history of the university and see the many influences of its founder, Thomas Jefferson. Following the tour, you’ll be transferred to the Historic Downtown Mall of Charlottesville for some free time for lunch, on your own, and shopping in the historic district of the city. This afternoon, you’ll depart for home with the customary rest and dinner stops (at your own expense) along the way.
