We report upon the amphibians collected during seven expeditions carried out between the years 2000–2006 to thirteen localities in both Refugio de Vida Silvestre Río San Juan and Reserva Biológica Indio-Maíz, southeastern Nicaragua. We include morphometric data of around one-half of the adult specimens in the collection, and provide a brief general overview and discuss zoogeographic and conservation considerations of the amphibians known to occur in the Río San Juan area. The following endoparasites were found: a myxozoan, Cystodiscus sp., a trematode, Clinostomum marginatum, two tapeworms, Cylindrotaenia americana (Oklahoma only) and Distoichometra bufonis, five nematodes, acuariid larvae, Cosmocercoides variabilis, Oswaldocruzia pipiens, larval Physaloptera sp. (Arkansas only), and Rhabdias americanus (Arkansas only), and acanthocephalans (Oklahoma only). Pseudoeurycea naucampatepetl. The Cofre de Perote salamander is endemic to the Sierra Madre Oriental of eastern Mexico. This relatively large salamander (reported to attain a total length of 150 mm) is recorded only from, “a narrow ridge extending east from Cofre de Perote and terminating [on] a small peak (Cerro Volcancillo) at the type locality,” in central Veracruz, at elevations from 2,500 to 3,000 m (Amphibian Species of the World website). Pseudoeurycea naucampatepetl has been assigned to the P. bellii complex of the P. bellii group (Raffaëlli 2007) and is considered most closely related to P. gigantea, a species endemic to the La specimens and has not been seen for 20 years, despite thorough surveys in 2003 and 2004 (EDGE; www.edgeofexistence.org), and thus it might be extinct. The habitat at the type locality (pine-oak forest with abundant bunch grass) lies within Lower Montane Wet Forest (Wilson and Johnson 2010; IUCN Red List website [accessed 21 April 2013]). The known specimens were “found beneath the surface of roadside banks” (www.edgeofexistence.org) along the road to Las Lajas Microwave Station, 15 kilometers (by road) south of Highway 140 from Las Vigas, Veracruz (Amphibian Species of the World website). This species is terrestrial and presumed to reproduce by direct development. Pseudoeurycea naucampatepetl is placed as number 89 in the top 100 Evolutionarily Distinct and Globally Endangered amphib- ians (EDGE; www.edgeofexistence.org). We calculated this animal’s EVS as 17, which is in the middle of the high vulnerability category (see text for explanation), and its IUCN status has been assessed as Critically Endangered. -

FEMALE PERSPECTIVES ON BREEDING PHENOLOGY IN EASTERN ONTARIO GRAY TREEFROGS by HAYLEY JENNIFER ROBERTS A thesis submitted to the Department of Biology in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Master of Science Queen’s University Kingston, Ontario, Canada (September 2015) Copyright © Hayley Jennifer Roberts, 2015 This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License Abstract Studies of the forces that shape local adaptation contribute to our understanding of origins of range-wide variation, speciation, and potential responses to changing environments. Phenology is an important component of such local adaptation. Phenological research is central to studies of geographical range limits and species distributions, migration, speciation, response to climate change and ex situ conservation and re-introduction programs. Despite over 22,000 phenological studies published thus far, there is a lack of phenological information on reproductive patterns of temperate anurans, particularly for females. My thesis therefore focuses on gaining insights into temperate frog phenology primarily of females, and patterns of female choice. I focus on Hyla versicolor (Gray Treefrogs), an Eastern North American temperate frog. My data come from perimeter transect surveys done at two wetlands at the Queen’s University Biological Station over the entire 2014 breeding season. I compared male and female peak abundance using an N- mixture model. Both males and females peaked on Julian Day 154 (June 3rd 2014). Females arrived three days after males in my focal wetlands, and left three days before. Timing of arrival is most likely based on a combination of females responding to male advertisement calls, and both sexes responding to abiotic factors (e.g. -

Signs of the Seasons: A New England Phenology Program Indicator Species Fact Sheet Eastern American Toad, Anaxyrus americanus The American toad is commonly found throughout New England and is native to eastern North America. Considered habitat generalists, these toads can be found anywhere that moisture and ample food are available, including multiple forest types, fields and urban areas. Toads play an important ecosystem role as insect consumers, thereby keeping populations in check. Appearance: Toads are shades of brown in color and are covered with warts. They have a wide head and short front limbs. Behind the eyes, there are kidney bean shaped glands; J.D. Willson, USGS Savannah River Ecology Lab, http://srel.uga.edu/ these paratoid glands produce toxins that give the toad an unpleasant taste. The toads range in length from 2-4 ½ inches. Females are slightly larger than males and lack the characteristic dark colored throat seen on males. Feeding: American toads are known to feed from early morning into the evening. They consume what is available and may eat a variety of larval insects, slugs, spiders, and centipedes, for example. Tadpoles feed on algae within their pools. Life History: Breeding season is triggered by the arrival of warmer temperatures and longer days. It begins in March or April when the toads arrive at shallow, fresh water pools. Males grasp the females around the belly in order to fertilize the eggs as they are laid. Between 4,000-12,000 eggs are laid in long parallel strands. They will hatch in 3-12 days, requiring 5-10 weeks to complete metamorphosis and 2-4 years to reach sexual maturity. -
Biological Opinion Regarding the Issuance of an Endangered Species Act of 1973, As Amended, (Act) Section 10(A)(1)(B) Permit
Biological Opinion for TE-065406-0 This document transmits the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's (Service) biological opinion regarding the issuance of an Endangered Species Act of 1973, as amended, (Act) Section 10(a)(1)(B) permit. The federal action under consideration is the issuance of a permit authorizing the incidental take of the federally listed endangered Houston toad (Bufo houstonensis) under the authority of sections 10(a)(1)(B) and 10(a)(2) of the Act. Boy Scouts of America, Capitol Area Council No. 564 (BSA/CAC) has submitted an application for an incidental take permit under the Act for take of the Houston toad. An Environmental Assessment/Habitat Conservation Plan (EA/HCP) has been reviewed for mitigation acceptability. The implementing regulations for Section 10(a)(1)(B) of the Act, as provided for by 50 CFR 17.22, specify the criteria by which a permit allowing the incidental "take" of listed endangered species pursuant to otherwise lawful activities may be obtained. The purpose and need for the Section 10(a)(1)(B) permit is to ensure that incidental take resulting from the proposed construction and operation of a “High Adventure” camp on the 4,848-acre Griffith League Ranch in Bastrop County, Texas, will be minimized and mitigated to the maximum extent practicable, and that the take is not expected to appreciably reduce the likelihood of the survival and recovery of this federally listed endangered species in the wild or adversely modify or destroy its federally designated critical habitat. The two federally listed species identified within this EA/HCP include the endangered Houston toad (and its designated critical habitat) and the threatened bald eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus). -

We produced rarefaction and extrapolation sample-size-based and coverage-based curves to provide asymptotic diversity estimators based on Hill numbers to compare the communities.
