For this edition several chapters have been completely re-written to relect major developments in Canadian literature since 2004. Surveys of ic- tion, drama, and poetry are complemented by chapters on Aboriginal writ- ing, autobiography, literary criticism, writing by women, and the emergence of urban writing. Areas of research that have expanded since the irst edition include environmental concerns and questions of sexuality which are freshly explored across several different chapters. A substantial chapter on franco- phone writing is included. Authors such as Margaret Atwood, noted for her experiments in multiple literary genres, are given full consideration, as is the work of authors who have achieved major recognition, such as Alice Munro, recipient of the Nobel Prize for literature. Eva-Marie Kröller edited the Cambridge Companion to Canadian Literature (irst edn., 2004) and, with Coral Ann Howells, the Cambridge History of Canadian Literature (2009). She has published widely on travel writing and cultural semiotics, and won a Killam Research Prize as well as the Distin- guished Editor Award of the Council of Editors of Learned Journals for her work as editor of the journal Canadian -

Although not born in the island, he soon became better known than such writers as Al Pittman and Ted Russell. Four full- length plays (Colour the Flesh the Colour of Dust, The Head, Guts and Sound Bone Dance, Jacob's Wake and The Gayden Chronicles) and six one-act plays (Tiln, Quiller, On the Rim of the Curve, Therese's Creed, The Fisherman's Revenge and the unpublished Not as a Dream) were staged between 1971 and 1978. But after the workshop presentation of The Gayden Chronicles in Connecticut in 1978, no new Cook texts reached the stage. This was not falling silent: Cook continued to write stage plays. This career is most seriously shaped: obscurity to national fame, then abrupt descent to near-obscurity. Cook, however, does not write only for the stage. He is the outstanding Canadian radio dramatist of his generation, with over fifty plays. Thirdly, Cook is an essayist: his best columns for the St John's Evening Telegram enhance his interpretation of what defines Newfoundland and examine big issues of Canadian culture. -

Radical social movements and countercultures challenged the conservatism of the preceding decade, rejected traditional forms of politics, and demanded an alternative based on the principles of social justice, individual freedom and an end to oppression on all fronts. Yet in Canada a unique political movement emerged which embraced these principles but proposed that New Left social movements – the student and anti-war movements, the women’s liberation movement and Canadian nationalists – could bring about radical political change not only through street protests and sit-ins, but also through participation in electoral politics. -

REPORT FOR ACTION Inclusion on the City of Toronto's Heritage Register - 19 Parkcrest Drive Date: May 25, 2021 To: Toronto Preservation Board Scarborough Community Council From: Senior Manager, Heritage Planning, Urban Design, City Planning Wards: Scarborough Southwest - Ward 20 SUMMARY This report recommends that City Council include the property at 19 Parkcrest Drive on the City of Toronto’s Heritage Register for its cultural heritage value. The subject property is situated on the east side of Parkcrest Drive, south and west of Kingston Road and Markham Road in the Scarborough Village neighbourhood. The property contains a one-and-a-half storey Craftsman Bungalow style house-form building constructed by Frederick J. Cornell c.1916-1917 which is distinguished by its rustic cladding of pebbles collected from the Scarborough Bluffs shoreline. The Frederick J. Cornell house is one of the earliest houses built in the Park Hill subdivision following the 1905-6 construction of the radial street car line on the Kingston Road which resulted in the historical transformation of southern Scarborough from a 19th century settlement of farms with a cluster villages to a series of planned communities along the lakefront and the Scarborough Bluffs. First occupied by descendants of the earliest Scarborough settler families, the Cornell's and Glendinning's, from 1970-75, the property was owned by Stephen Lewis, the Canadian politician, ambassador to the United Nations and broadcaster, and Michele Landsberg, best-selling author, journalist and activist, both of whom have been recognized with honours through the Order of Canada. A nomination to evaluate the property was submitted by the Scarborough Community Preservation Panel in 2012. -

By 1875 also in Toronto, Montreal, Québec City and Halifax. 1870 Hebrew Women’s Society is Founded to aid poor Jewish residents of Hamilton, Ontario. 1871 The Montreal Ladies Educational Association is founded with Anne Molson as President. The Association had honorary male members and a male treasurer. Its main goal was to have women accepted as students at McGill College. 1874 Women’s Christian Temperance Union (WCTU) is one of earliest organizations of volunteer women to create social change. 1875 Henrietta Muir Edwards and her sister open the Working Girl’s Association in Montréal. It offered a boarding house, a reading room, classes and meal services. 1876 The Toronto Women’s Literary Club is founded by Dr Emily Howard Stowe (1831-1903) and her daughter, Dr Augusta Stowe-Gullen (1857-1943). The group was created for suffrage activities. 1883 The Toronto Women’s Literary Club becomes the Toronto Women’s Suffrage Association. SUFFRAGE / RIGHTS / ROLE IN SOCIETY 1666 Trois Rivieres region of Québec women were running the trading post and some taverns, operating small businesses selling clothing, furs, utensils, brandy. 1713 Captured as a prize of war, Thanandelthur becomes a peace negotiator and paves the way for other native women to hold influential positions in trade relations. 1791 New Brunswick passes a law excluding women from the RIGHT TO VOTE. -

Standing in Support of Canadian Journalist Mohamed Fahmy
STANDING IN SUPPORT OF CANADIAN JOURNALIST MOHAMED FAHMY Dear Prime Minister Harper: We (the undersigned) are writing to urge you to intervene personally and immediately in the case of Canadian journalist Mohamed Fahmy, who is currently facing retrial in Egypt after 411 days of incarceration. As you know, Mr. Fahmy has fulfilled all the requirements for his deportation from Egypt, including relinquishing his Egyptian citizenship. His legal counsel, Amal Clooney, has stated that there is no legal impediment to Mr. Fahmy’s immediate transfer to Canada. Mr. Fahmy and his family have been concerned that there appears to be a lack of advocacy coming directly from the Canadian government and Prime Minister’s office. Mr. Fahmy’s colleague, Peter Greste, was released and deported February 1 after the personal intervention of Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott, who spoke personally to President el-Sisi three times. We are deeply concerned that this type of initiative has not been taken by the Canadian government. There have been statements in recent days from Minister of State Lynne Yelich in response to concern from the Canadian public, but Mr. Fahmy’s case deserves assurances of action at the highest level. The timing is crucial, as Mr. Fahmy is facing retrial on February 23. It is essential that this initiative be followed immediately to ensure his safe release and deportation back to Canada. We stand in support of Mr. Fahmy along with thousands of Canadians, international human rights organizations and global political leaders urging you to contact President el-Sisi and request that Mr. Fahmy’s deportation order be honoured. -

Libraries, museums and archives are in the unique position of facilitating the creation of digital initiatives in the classroom by offering up their collections as “learning laboratories,” and by sharing their expertise in technology, information, and digital literacy as well as data management.
