Herbert Linge – 'Mr Do Everything' At
Herbert Linge – ‘Mr Do Everything’ at Porsche Weissach-born Herbert Linge is part of the history of Porsche – and Porsche has in turn played a major role in the life of Herbert Linge. His first plant ID was dated 7 April 1943. Herbert Linge raced at a number of circuits all over the world, entering the 24 Hours of Le Mans on 11 occasions, winning the 1963 German GT championship and taking the Porsche 356 to victory at the Tour de Corse with Paul-Ernst Strähle in 1960. But there is more to this story: Porsche had an influence on his whole working life, as his plant ID dated 7 April 1943 showed only too well. ‘I was one of the first apprentices to join Porsche,’ recalled Linge, who was born in Weissach in 1928. In 1949, he was the first mechanic hired by Porsche once the company had been re-established in Stuttgart. As with all employees at the fledgling firm, Linge served as a jack of all trades and was quickly given the role of test driver. The racing drivers recognised the value of having a colleague with hands-on experience of every last bolt on the car. In 1952, 1953 and 1954, Linge was responsible for setting up the Porsche cars that achieved class wins at the Carrera Panamericana. Linge enjoyed frequent success in the cockpit. Serving as Hans Herrmann’s co-driver at the 1954 Mille Miglia, he was on hand to experience Herrmann’s legendary manoeuvre that saw the car zoom across a level crossing as the gates were closing – and subsequently record a class win.

uring the early Porsche days of the 1950s and ‘60s, Denise McCluggage Dand Ruth Levy were two of the more popular U.S. women sports car racers. In Eu- rope, Gilberte Thirion and Annie Bousquet are the two most recognized women racers during A Racing Lady this period. Similar in age, they began as close friends but apparently racing changed this. His- young and daring torians claim Annie’s fierce competitive nature caused her to not only lose a friend but to even- tually lose her life. Born Annie Schaffer in Vienna, Austria, her exact birth year is debated but apparently falls somewhere between 1921 and 1925. Annie’s French identity is the result of her marriage to Pierre Bousquet whom she first met while he was a POW in Austria during the war. After the Annie Bousquet marriage, the couple moved to France. Legend has it that Bousquet’s racing career began as the result of a 1952 ski trip. Having in- jured herself, she was recuperating in a Ses- triere, Italy hotel bar where she met Gigi Viloresi and Alberto Ascari. Annie was overwhelmed by their exciting racing escapades and a few months later she entered the Rally Sestriere. Some writers state that Bousquet raced with Al- berto Ascari but this seems highly unlikely. As- cari was the 1951 Formula One World Champion and was driving for Scuderia Ferrari at the time. So it seems very unlikely he would have teamed up with a neophyte woman. The records show Bousquet did enter two other races in 1952. The first was the July Alpine Rally where she drove a Renault 4CV but broke the gearbox in Col d’Izoard on the first leg.

Biography: Herbert Linge began his motor racing career rather as a 15 year old apprentice mechanic at Porsche KG in 1943. After the war, he worked on the initial development of the Porsche 356. In the early 1950s, Dr. Ferdinand Porsche commissioned Linge to develop the Porsche service network in the United States and train mechanics at Porsche dealerships. Thus, he played a critical role in popularizing Porsche sports cars in North America. Linge was a mechanic assigned to the Porsche entrants in the early Carrera Panamericana races and in 1954 was tapped as a driver. Thus began his Linge’s long period of success in the great endurance races and rallies of the 1950s and 1960s. From 1958 until 1970 Linge drove a Porsche eleven times in the 24 Hours of Le Mans and beginning in 1955 through 1965 he drove a Porsche seven times in the 12 Hours of Sebring.

His career began appropriately, in 1952, in a private Porsche 356, in which he took part in hill climbs, rallies and reliability runs. The very next year, he came fifth in the Lyon-Charbonnières Rally together with Richard von Frankenberg in a Porsche 356. Thereupon Porsche’s racing manager at that time, Huschke von Hanstein, brought him into Porsche works team. In 1953, Herrmann made his debut in the 24 Hours of Le Mans where, together with co-pilot Helm Glöckler in a Porsche 550 Coupé, he secured a best in class victory in the category up to 1.5 litres capacity.

Hamburg, February 19, 2019 – After Porsche exited the LMP1 class of the 24 hour race of Le Mans, the sports-car maker from Zuffenhausen and Grabarz & Partner have now created an auditory monument to celebrate its successes: Porsche pressed records from the tires of the triple Le Mans victor, the 919 Hybrid. The name of the elaborately produced and packaged limited series: “The 24 Minutes of Le Mans.” Le Mans. A name whispered reverently by fans of car races. Since 1923, the small French town has seen the best race cars of the world fighting in a race that tests the limits of drivers, vehicles, and teams for 24 hours. The “24 heures du Mans” is seen as the hardest race of the world, not just by experts. In 1951, the first Porsche crossed the starting line in Le Mans, a 356 SL. Since then, the German sports-car maker has scored 19 overall wins. The last car in the prototype class LMP1 – the top class of the endurance race series FIA World Endurance Championship – competing from 2014 to 2017, was the 919 Hybrid. It accomplished a hat trick with three overall wins in a row and became a Le Mans legend. After leaving the LMP1 class, the 919 Hybrid went on an international tribute tour and finally took its place at the Porsche Museum at the end of 2018. Now an auditory monument has been created for it: Porsche had the original tires of the Le Mans winner shredded and melted – to press a limited series of unique records.
