Atlanta Braves Clippings Thursday, September 10, 2020 Braves.com Braves set NL standard with 29-run outburst Atlanta breaks Modern Era record in National League (since 1900) By Mark Bowman ATLANTA -- Adam Duvall produced his second three-homer game within an eight-day span to help the Braves roll to a record-setting 29-9 win over the Marlins on Wednesday night at Truist Park. Duvall became the first player to record two three-homer games while wearing a Braves uniform, and his efforts helped Atlanta set a National League record for runs in a game in the modern era (since 1900). “That was pretty amazing to be a part of,” Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman said. “I’ve never seen an offense click like that.” The Braves fell just one run short of tying the modern record for runs scored in a game, set when the Rangers defeated the Orioles, 30-3, in the first game of a doubleheader on Aug. 22, 2007, at Camden Yards. Dating back to 1900, no NL club had scored more than 28 runs in a game. The Braves’ franchise record was 23, a mark tallied during the second game of a doubleheader against the Cubs on Sept. 2, 1957. Ronald Acuña Jr. contributed to his three-hit night with a three-run home run to cap a six-run fifth. But it was his bases-loaded double in the sixth inning that gave the Braves a new franchise record for runs in a single game, opening a 25-8 lead. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Atlanta became the first MLB team to score at least 22 runs through the first five innings since the Blue Jays (24 runs) in a win over the Orioles on June 26, 1978. -
Measuring Production and Predicting Outcomes in the National Basketball Association
Measuring Production and Predicting Outcomes in the National Basketball Association Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Michael Steven Milano, M.S. Graduate Program in Education The Ohio State University 2011 Dissertation Committee: Packianathan Chelladurai, Advisor Brian Turner Sarah Fields Stephen Cosslett Copyright by Michael Steven Milano 2011 Abstract Building on the research of Loeffelholz, Bednar and Bauer (2009), the current study analyzed the relationship between previously compiled team performance measures and the outcome of an “un-played” game. While past studies have relied solely on statistics traditionally found in a box score, this study included scheduling fatigue and team depth. Multiple models were constructed in which the performance statistics of the competing teams were operationalized in different ways. Absolute models consisted of performance measures as unmodified traditional box score statistics. Relative models defined performance measures as a series of ratios, which compared a team‟s statistics to its opponents‟ statistics. Possession models included possessions as an indicator of pace, and offensive rating and defensive rating as composite measures of efficiency. Play models were composed of offensive plays and defensive plays as measures of pace, and offensive points-per-play and defensive points-per-play as indicators of efficiency. Under each of the above general models, additional models were created to include streak variables, which averaged performance measures only over the previous five games, as well as logarithmic variables. Game outcomes were operationalized and analyzed in two distinct manners - score differential and game winner. -

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL WEEKLY NOTES THURSDAY, AUGUST 31, 2017 KINGS OF K’S On Tuesday night against the Toronto Blue Jays, six-time All-Star Chris Sale registered the 1,500th strikeout of his Major League career. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Sale reached the milestone in his 1,290th career inning, the fewest numbers of innings needed for any pitcher in Major League history. Kerry Wood was the next fastest, accomplishing the feat over 1,303 innings of work, followed by Hall of Famers Pedro Martinez (1,337 IP), Randy Johnson (1,365.2 IP) and Nolan Ryan (1,384.2 IP). In addition, the dominant left-hander has logged 264 punchouts across 27 starts in his fi rst season with the Red Sox. Per Elias, only four other pitchers in MLB history have logged that many strikeouts in their fi rst season with a Club. Johnson holds the record, having recorded 364 strikeouts in his premier season with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 1999, trailed by Ryan (301), Roger Clemens (292), and Max Scherzer (276). The table below details each ace’s historical season with his new Club. Washington’s Scherzer made history Monday night after tallying 10 punchouts across 7.0 innings pitched against the Miami Marlins. With the outing, Scherzer joined Sale as the eighth hurler in MLB history to log at least 230 strikeouts over his fi rst 25 starts of a season. Sale, who accomplished the feat following his start on August 19th, notched 250 punchouts over his fi rst 25 outings. Across MLB history, six other pitchers have tallied that many strikeouts though their fi rst 25 outings of a season: Hall of Famers Sandy Koufax (1965) and Ryan (1973, 77, 89); Clemens (1988), Hall of Famers Johnson (1995, 97-2001) and Marinez (1997, 99, 2000), as well as Curt Schilling (2002). -

MICHAEL J. CRAMER * & JAMES M. SWIATKO, JR.** I. INTRODUCTION The period of 1994 through 2002 has been called a myriad of things by commentators, fans, baseball personnel and players when referring to this time period in baseball history. Unfortunately, not many of the names used or applied are complimentary, at least by those who are not part of the Major League Baseball (MLB) hierarchy. Names such as "Baseball's Watergate" or "Selig's Watergate,"' the "Tainted Era,"2 the "Non-Drug Testing Era," the "*ERA" or simply the "Steroids Era"3 have been suggested. Conversely, MLB commissioner Bud Selig has called this period a "renaissance" for baseball and "baseball's Golden Age." 4 As can be seen by these few examples of opinions about the subject time period, a wide gap exists in the perceptions of those who have expressed opinions on the subject. -
