Protecting Postmodern Historicism: Identification, vE aluation, and Prescriptions for Preeminent Sites Abstract Just as architectural history traditionally takes the form of a march of styles, so too do preservationists repeatedly campaign to save seminal works of an architectural manner several decades after its period of prominence. This is currently happening with New Brutalism and given its age and current unpopularity will likely soon befall postmodern historicism. In hopes of preventing the loss of any of the manner’s preeminent works, this study provides professionals with a framework for evaluating the significance of postmodern historicist designs in relation to one another. Through this, the limited resources required for large-scale preservation campaigns can be correctly dedicated to the most emblematic sites. Three case studies demonstrate the application of these criteria and an extended look at recent preservation campaigns provides lessons in how to best proactively preserve unpopular sites. -

Led by U.S. Conference of Mayors President Miami Mayor Manny Diaz, over 60 mayors will also meet with Attorney General Eric H. Holder, Jr., Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan, Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, Energy Secretary Dr. Steven Chu, Education Secretary Arne Duncan and White House Senior Staff. The mayors meeting with President Obama and Vice President Biden will take place from 10:30 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. in the East Room of the White House and will be OPEN to the press. The mayors will also hold a press availability at the White House at 11:30 a.m. immediately following the meeting (location is TBD). Following the White House meeting, the mayors will gather at the Capitol Hilton in Washington, D.C. for a session with U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lisa Jackson, U.S. Department of Energy Weatherization Program Director Gil Sperling, and U.S. Department of Justice COPS Office Acting Director Tim Quinn. With the 2012 Republican presidential primary race in high gear this fall, students packed buses to nearby New Hampshire to meet presidential candidates as the IOP conducted timely younger voter public opinion research in Iowa and the Granite State. Welcome to the Institute of Politics at Harvard University Trey Grayson, Director The 2012 election cycle is in high gear, and the past six months have been fast- paced at the Institute. As you will note in this newsletter, the IOP has been at the forefront of election and campaign-related programming, with events, conferences and younger voter research unavailable anywhere else. One of my biggest goals since beginning service as the Institute’s Director has been to improve how the IOP utilizes technology – in an effort to maximize efficiency internally and best distribute and share our content externally to audiences inter- ested in politics and public service. Toward this end, we are very pleased this month to unveil the new online home for John F. Kennedy Jr. Forum programming at www.jfkjrforum.org (see feature on next page). The new microsite not only has a state-of-the art design but also can broadcast Forum programming in a format allowing Forum events to be streamed live or viewed later on any computer or device, including iPads and iPhones. We are also hard at work building a new IOP-wide website – scheduled to be completed next fall – which improves our current website layout and better integrates key online content from Institute students and student publications like the Harvard Political Review. -

“The Schools Are Killing Our Kids!” the African American Fight for Self- Determination in the Boston Public Schools, 1949-1985
ABSTRACT Title of dissertation: “THE SCHOOLS ARE KILLING OUR KIDS!” THE AFRICAN AMERICAN FIGHT FOR SELF- DETERMINATION IN THE BOSTON PUBLIC SCHOOLS, 1949-1985 Lauren Tess Bundy, Doctor of Philosophy, 2014 Dissertation directed by: Associate Professor David Freund, Department of History This dissertation examines a grassroots movement led by black Bostonians to achieve racial justice, quality education, and community empowerment in the Boston Public Schools during the postwar period. From the late 1940s through the early 1980s black parents, teachers, and students employed a wide-range of strategies in pursuit of these goals including staging school boycotts, creating freedom schools, establishing independent alternative schools, lobbying for legislation, forming parent and youth groups, and organizing hundreds of grassroots organizations. At the heart of this movement was a desire to improve the quality of education afforded to black youth and to expand the power of black Bostonians in educational governance. This dissertation demonstrates that desegregation and community control were not mutually exclusive goals or strategies of black educational activism. I examine the evolution of the goals, ideology, and strategy of this movement over the course of more than three decades in response to shifts in the national and local political climate. This work traces the close ties between this local movement in Boston and broader movements for racial and social justice unfolding across the nation in the 1940s, 50s, 60s, and 70s. Most importantly, my dissertation puts this movement in conversation with a broader national project of various marginalized groups in the postwar period to radically transform the institutions of democracy. This dissertation challenges a well-known narrative of civil rights and school desegregation in Boston in this period. -

Suggestions for a super autumn • • In New England! -This Week- Bands, officials all lined up for 'bigger, better' parade By Esther Shein "Allston-Brighton is going to sink into the ground this weekend under the wave of all the politicians and bands on Sunday," declares Parade Committee Chairman Joe Hogan. An estimated 25-30 bands are expected for this year's third annual parade. "We've got far more quality this year-it's going to be bigger and bet ter," he says proudly. The event-filled weekend kicks off Saturday with a cattle fair~ sponsored by the Brighton Congregational Church with assistance from the Brighton Board of Trade. In past years the BBOT hasheld fairs the day before the parade, but "some mer chants have felt the street fair was ~ounterproductive to business," ex plains president Frank Moy. "We wanted to do a family fair outside Brighton Center in [late] September, but the cost of liability insur ance .. ,made it not in our best in terest to do so." Instead, the BBOT has provided banners for the fair and will sell large, colorful posters of Allston-Brighton, with the proceeds going to benefit the Church's 160th anniversary next year. NOTRE DAME WELCOME TO NOTRE DAME The interior of the golden-domed Main Building on the Notre Dame campus was closed for the 1997-99 academic years as it underwent a renovation. The facility was rededicated in ceremonies in August of ’99. It also underwent a $5 million exterior renovation, which included the cleaning and repair of the 4.2 million bricks of the facility, in 1996. The University of Notre Dame decided, however, was precisely the type of institution Notre Dame would become. How could this small Midwestern school without endowment and without ranks of well-to-do alumni hope to compete with firmly established private universities and public-sup- ported state institutions? As in Sorin’s day, the fact that the University pursued this lofty and ambitious vision of its future was testimony to the faith of its leaders — leaders such as Father John Zahm, C.S.C. As Schlereth describes it: “Zahm… envisioned Notre Dame as potentially ‘the intellectual center of the American West’; an institu- tion with large undergraduate, graduate, and profes- sional schools equipped with laboratories, libraries, and research facilities; Notre Dame should strive to become the University that its charter claimed it was.” Zahm was not without evidence to support his faith in Notre Dame’s potential.
