Regarded as a pioneer of modern Indian art, Ash’s contribution at the time when India witnessed the advent of Western modernism is significant and colossal. His work was exploratory, visionary and inspiring. He printed with bold courage and a free spirit, never yielding to the rules set by official art. He rejected the preconceived notions of how an artist ought to render his subjects and inevitably rebelled against the academic rules “ If we look at nature in the open, we do not see individual objects each with its own colors but rather a bright medley of tints which blend in our eyes, in our minds.” – Gobardhan Ash (The Statesman, April 24, 1994). His verbal imagery alluded to what was real and relevant in India yet transcended to communicate a deeper, universal message about the human spirit.

    Emami Art Hosts ‘Feminine Facets’ An online exhibition of small-format works that reveals the feminine worlds as seen and imagined by six eminent artists from Bengal Kolkata, xx June, 2021 : Emami Art, one of India’s leading contemporary art galleries based in Kolkata is hosting an online exhibition ‘Feminine Facets’ focusing on the playfulness and delicacy of small- format works. This exhibition features images of woman, mostly faces, done by six widely known and celebrated modern artists from Bengal: KG Subramanyan, Rabin Mondal, Jogen Chowdhury, Lalu Prasad Shaw, Ramananda Bandyopadhyay, and Arunima Choudhury. The images of woman dominate the oeuvre of each of the artists. But they do not share the same outlook in depicting her in their work. The two works by Jogen Chowdhury in the exhibition show his trademark brush and ink style, the calligraphic rhythm of which captures the organic elegance of the female form. Ramananda Bandyopadhyay is also known for his mastery of lines. His powerful drawings, enhanced by the touches of colours, combine the elegance of classical art with the simplicity and rustic innocence of the folk art of Bengal. The two portraits by Lalu Prasad Shaw are dissimilar both in style and mood. The woman with a mirror in hand seems to have emerged straight from one of his famous “Babu-Bibi” paintings, which speaks of the quintessential emotions and sentiments of the married, middle-class Bengali couple. The scent of regionalism is not so strongly felt in the work of KG Subramanyan and Rabin Mondal. While Subramanyan represents women, as he does men and animals, as an integral part of his complex narrative vision, Rabin Modal is more interested in the bold, iconic, unsophisticated and primitivistic forms.

Education : Padamsee was still a student at the Sir J.J. School of Art in Mumbai at the time when the Progressive Artists’ Group (PAG) announced itself on the Indian art scene in 1947. Historically, this is considered to be one of the most influential groups of modern artists to emerge in early post-independent India. Style : Akbar Padamsee is a contemporary Indian artist and painter, considered one of the pioneers in Modern Indian painting along with Raza, Souza and M.F. Hussain. Over the years he has also worked with various mediums from oil painting, plastic emulsion, water colour, sculpture, printmaking, to computer graphics, and photography, as worked a film maker, sculptor, photographer, engraver, and lithographer. Padamsee loved working with Chinese ink and incorporating it in the things he saw around. Today his paintings are among the most valued by modern Indian artists.
