The trauma of the uprooting is reflected in most of his works. Though Haloi has worked in many media, he is known for his landscapes. Eventually, Haloi concentrated on abstract renderings of landscapes. NANDALAL BOSE Nandalal Bose ( 3 December 1882, Munger-16 April 1966, Kolkata) was one of the pioneers of modern Indian art and a key figure of Contextual Modernism. A pupil of Abanindranath Tagore, Bose was known for his "Indian style" of painting. He became the principal of Kala Bhavan, Santiniketan in 1922 CHITTAPROSAD Chittaprosad Bhattacharya (21 June 1915, Naihati-13 November 1978) was a political artist of the mid-20th century. He preferred watercolor and printmaking, avoiding oil on canvas. Chittaprosad used prints to disseminate leftist ideas and propaganda SUNIL DAS Sunil Das (4 August 1939, India -10 August 2015, Kolkata) was an Indian expressionist painter. He is known for the paintings in his Bull Series and his piece "Woman". In 2014 the Government of India conferred upon him its fourth-highest civilian award, the Padma Shri B C SANYAL Bhabesh Chandra Sanyal (22 April 1901, Dhubri - 9 August 2003, New Delhi) commonly known as B. C. Sanyal, the doyen of modernism in Indian art, was an Indian painter and sculptor and an Art teacher to three generations of artists. RABIN MONDAL Rabin Mondal,(1929, Howrah- 2 July 2019, Bidhannagar, Kolkata) born as Rabindra Nath Mondal, was an Indian painter from Howrah, West Bengal. He was an Indian artist who was a founding member of the Calcutta Painters DHARAMANARAYAN DASGUPTA Dharmanarayan Dasgupta was born in 1939 in Tripura and died 1997 at Kolkata. Dharmanarayan Dasgupta is an Indian Asian Modern & Contemporary painter who was born in 1939. Their work was featured in several exhibitions at key galleries and museums, including the DAG Modern, Mumbai and the DAG Modern, New Delhi. Rabindranath Tagore (7 May 1861, Kolkata - 7 August 1941, Jorasanko Thakur Bari, Kolkata) FRAS, also known by his pen name Bhanu Singha Thakur, and also known by his sobriquets Gurudev, Kabiguru, and Biswakabi, was a polymath, poet, musician, and artist from the Indian subcontinent J. P. GANGOOLY J. P. Gangooly (1876 - 1953)belonged to the extended Tagore family in Calcutta. Like many of his class of affluent gentlemen artists, Gangooly didn’t go to art school but was a product of private art training at home, initiated later into art by Abanindranath Tagore. Gangooly painted at the time of rise of new nationalist and modernist art movements.In 1905, he was elected the joint chairperson of the Bangiya Kala Samsad, Calcutta, and founded the Indian Society of Oriental Art, Calcutta, in 1907. In 1936, he was elected joint director of the Academy of Fine Arts, Calcutta. Gangooly became vice-principal of the Government College of Art & Craft, Calcutta, in 1916, a position he held till his retirement in 1928. GOPAL GHOSE Gopal Ghose ( 5 December 1913, Kolkata- 30 July 1980) was an Indian painter from West Bengal. In 1943, he was one of the founders of the Calcutta Group, perhaps the first group of modernist painters in India BIPIN BEHARI GOSWAMI BIPIN BEHARI GOSWAMI (1934-2019) was an Indian Asian Modern & Contemporary artist. Bipin Goswami's work has been offered at auction multiple times. He was the Secretary of the Calcutta Painters` Group, Calcutta. He was the executive member of All India Sculpture Forum. 1956-57 Worked as Senior Artist with M/s. Bhaskar, Calcutta. 1961 Represented India in the VII International Students Meet held at Dubrovnik and Lubljana, Yugoslavai, organized by the U.N.E.S.C.O. He worked as guest artist of Lalit Kala Akademi for casting in bronze and alluminium, number of sculptures done by famous sculptor Ramkinkar Baij. Previously he was the member of the Board of Studies, Calcutta University, Kolkata and Benaras Hindu University, Benaras. Although he was the son of highly eminent artist Hirachand Dugar, Indra Dugar did not have any formal education in art. Instead, he learnt artistic techniques and practices from his father. During his schooling days in Santiniketan, he soaked in the ambience of Kala Bhavan, and was influenced by the Neo-Bengal School of Art. He was also a writer, he wrote for reputed publications such as Anand Bazar Patrika. Awarded by several institutions, Dugar was a member of the Academy of Fine Arts in Calcutta and All India Fine Arts & Crafts Society in New Delhi. Indra Dugar passed away in 1989. Kshitindranath Majumdar Kshitindranath Majumdar was born on 31st July 1891(and died 1975), in Jagtai, Nimtita, a village in Murshidabad, far from the urban Kolkata, where he later spent most of his life. His father Kedarnath Majumdar single handedly brought him up as his mother passed away when he was very young. As a teen, he acted in a local theatre group that his father owned. His artistic abilities were recognised by the Zamindar of a nearby village, Nimtita. On his counsel, Majumdar joined the Government Art College in Kolkata in 1905.Ksitindra Nath Majumdar remained pastoral throughout, never become urbanite though he lived in cities most of his life. He was the art teacher and principal of the school at the Society of Oriental Arts, Calcutta for 18 years and then he went to Allahabad University in 1942 (as the president of the art department). There he taught till his retirement till 1964. On 9 February, 1975 A.D. he passed away leaving all his works immortal. HEMANTA MISRA HEMANTA MISRA: (1917-2009)Hemanta Misra was born in Sivasagar, Assam, on the 13th of October, 1917. His father was Pandit Gauridutta Misra Vidyabhusan and his mother was Girija Devi. Hemanta Misra had his school education in Sivasagar and Guwahati and later studied in Cotton College and St Edmund’s, Shillong. Primarily a self- taught artist,Hemanta Misra’s contribution towards placing Assam on the art map of the country has been an immense one. Hemanta Misra was also a poet and writer The celebrated artist passed away in Guwahati on the 31st of December, 2009. BENODE BEHARI MUKHERJEE Benode Behari Mukherjee (7 February 1904, Behala, Kolkata -11 November 1980, India) was an Indian artist from West Bengal state. Mukherjee was one of the pioneers of Indian modern art and a key figure of Contextual Modernism. He was one of the earliest artists in modern India to take up to murals as a mode of artistic expression GANESH PYNE Ganesh Pyne (11 June 1937, Kolkata -12 March 2013, Kolkata) was an Indian painter and draughtsman, born in Kolkata, West Bengal. Pyne is one of the most notable contemporary artists of the Bengal School of Art, who had also developed his own style of "poetic surrealism", fantasy and dark imagery, around the themes of Bengali folklore and mythology. INDU RAKSHIT SHYAMAL DUTTA RAY Shyamal Dutta Ray was born in Bihar in 1934 and died in 2005. He studied at the Government School of Arts and Crafts in Kolkata from 1950-1955. A founding member of the famed Society of Contemporary Artists, he is credited with having added an unprecedented depth and intensity to watercolor as a medium. BIREN DE Biren De (8 October 1926, Bengal Presidency -12 March 2011, Kolkata) was one of the few artists who used abstract art as a mode of reflection. Tantric elements are visible in his paintings. Biren De was born in Faridpur in Bangladesh. He studied Art at the Government College of Arts and Crafts, Kolkata and graduated in 1949 His talents earned him a Fulbright Grant thereby spending some part of his life living and working in New York The elements of tantra elements in his paintings give them a mysterious frame. Biren De can be considered as a revolutionary painter. From 1952-64 he served as a Lecturer in the College of Art and Delhi Polytechnic, New Delhi. He was a visiting Faculty Member in 1968 in the School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi.
