RABBI’S MESSAGE

MEDINAT YISRAEL- THE GIFT AND THE CHALLENGE

When World War II ended, Zalman Koifman, a Czech Jew liberated from the Bergan-Belsen concentration camp, discovered that he was the only one of his family left alive. In September 1945 Koifman decided to go to Palestine. He settled in Kfar Etzion and became a baker.

Esther Dreisiger’s family was wiped out in . Dreisiger, the survivor of several Nazi camps, tried repeatedly to get to Palestine, and eventually, in 1946, she succeeded. In Kfar Etzion she and Koifman met, and the two subsequently married. A short time later, on May 13, 1948, one day before Israel's Declaration of Independence, the two were killed when the soldiers of the Legion overran Kfar Etzion.

The Koifmans, together with 275 other Holocaust survivors killed in Israel's wars who were the sole survivors of their families, are being commemorated by a special monument at in .

The Jewish national calendar of Israel is populated by new holidays that Israel has placed at the center of our national and Jewish consciousness and which define and set aside the most significant time of the year in Israeli society.

These holidays – bunched together within one week – are Yom Hashoah (Holocaust Memorial Day), Yom Hazikaron (Memorial Day for Fallen Soldiers), and Yom Haatzmaut (Independence Day). It would not be an exaggeration to say these three days together constitute a “High Holidays” season of Israeli life.

The proximity of Yom Hashoah and Yom Haatzmaut is an opportunity to consider ways in which the former informs our understanding of the latter. How does the Holocaust shape our understanding of the modern State of Israel? A very loaded question with many answers. (Politicians at times get into trouble when they justify Israel’s existence on the horrors of the Holocaust. It may be the historical impetus for the events surrounding Hakamat Hamedina, but we know the Jewish claim to Israel goes back not eight decades, but four millennia.)

I’d like us to consider two ways the Holocaust should inform our appreciation of Medinat Yisrael: one that emphasizes the gift that is Israel and one that notes the new challenge that Israel presents us.

First: the proximity of Yom Hashoah to Yom Haatzmaut reminds us of the gift that is our national homeland: namely, cannot live fully free lives nor lives to the fullest anywhere but Israel. There’s a saying that has become popular on the internet:

Yom Hazikaron is a reminder of the cost of having a Jewish State; Yom Hashoah is a reminder of the cost of not having one.

Anti-Semitism in the 21st century is unfortunately alive and well. Only in the State of Israel can all Jews find refuge. Only in Medinat Yisrael are Jews responsible for their own safety and welfare.

And only in Eretz Ysirael can Jews live their lives to the fullest.

This finds expression in mitzvot that only apply in Israel. This also finds expression in that fact that Israel’s calendar is the Jewish calendar, and Israel’s atmosphere is a Jewish one. The Ramban goes so far as to suggest that only mitzvot performed in the Land of Israel are truly authentic, and mitzvoth observed in the Diaspora are only for practice. There’s an intrinsic value added to Jewish observance and Jewish life in the Land of Israel. This is the gift that is the State of Israel, magnified through the prism of Yom Hashoah

At the same time, Yom Hashoah reminds us of the unity of the Jewish People; a concept that needs to be reinforced in the Jewish community today, especially in Israel. Rav Amital once said, “In Auschwitz, they did not check people’s tzitzis before sending them to the gas chambers; should we check tzitzis before regarding someone as a brother?” In the Diaspora, the Jews’ minority status has historically forced us to stick together, even when we profoundly disagreed. In the Jewish State (and even in some places in the Diaspora where Jews feel confident and protected) there is a danger that we start to think of the “us and them” paradigm – even among Jews. A weakening of our shared identity occurs which is the antithesis of the unity that Am Yisrael is supposed to reflect.

Ahavat Ha’aretz and Ahavat Yisrael are the tasks for these days. These are the tasks that we bring as we count Sefira in the 21st century. When we accept Torah anew again this Shavuot, let us do so with a fresh and deeper appreciation for the gift of Medinat Yisrael, Land of Israel, and the challenge of maintaining the Achdut of Am Yisrael, People of Israel.

As so many of you know, our shul has embarked and Frieberg (and Rabbi Davis back when he on a search for a third full-time Rabbi to add to was solely an Ashkenazic Rabbi) have done a our already dynamic team. The shul lay leadership identified our burgeoning “community within a community” of young families as a particular area of Rabbinic need. We are blessed to have one of the largest, most diverse groups of young families of any shul in the orthodox Jewish world here at our Young Israel. The challenges of raising modern Orthodox Jewish families today are different than even a decade ago, and the need to establish and maintain connections with this key demographic grows greater every year. Therefore, we determined that our new Rabbinic hire should have already demonstrated expertise in this area, and should devote most of his efforts there. In addition, this should obviously free up our current team to expand their bandwidth and relationships across the entire kehilla. We are tremendously excited about the possibilities such a qualified, dedicated new hire can bring to the entire community. Please come out to meet the candidates and help us to show them what a tremendous opportunity they are The search itself is a testament to the explosive pursuing. growth with which our Young Israel of Hollywood community has been privileged. For more than a decade we have grown at a rate of DAVID LASKO, President about 40 families per year, and this is the first attempt in recent years to address that growth at a full-time rabbinic level. SEFIRAT HAOMER AND THE FORGETFUL Rabbi Adam Frieberg [email protected]

While many mitzvot happen daily, or over a period of is a separate and unique mitzvah to count Sefirat HaOmer that time, Sefirat HaOmer holds a unique place as a mitzvah that is in no way connected to the previous day’s mitzvah. may be dependent on one’s actions from a previous day. While we are obligated to do some mitzvot every day (e.g. But what about the second, more unfortunate scenario, prayer) and some only during certain times of the year (e.g. where one forgot to count at night and the entire subsequent shaking lulav during Sukkot), there are few other mitzvot, and day? Answering that question seems to revolve around how even fewer that are practiced today when we unfortunately different Rishonim interpret the verse, (Vayikra 23:15): lack the Beit HaMikdash, that are directly impacted by ּוסְפַרְתֶֶּ֤ם לָכֶם֙ מִ מָ חֳרַ ַ֣ת הַשַבָָּ֔ ת מִ ּיֹום֙ הֲבִ ַ֣יאֲכֶָּ֔ םאֶ ת־ע ֹ֖מֶרהַתְ נּופָ ָ֑ה שֶֶׁ֥ ב ַ ע שַ ב ָ תֹ֖ ֹו ת whether or not we fulfilled the mitzvah yesterday. So while תְמִ י מ ת ֶׁ֥ תִ הְ ֶֽיֶ י ָנ ה everyone agrees that we are supposed to count daily, starting on the night of the second Seder (outside of Israel), what is “And you shall count for yourselves, from the morrow of the one supposed to do if they forgot to count on one of the 49 rest day from the day you bring the omer as a wave offering nights? seven weeks; they shall be complete.”

To begin to discuss this question, we must first ask what Behag provides the simplest reading of the verse. He exactly did you forget to do? There are two possible scenarios suggests that a count must be sequential, and therefore no day that will have potentially different ramifications. A person may be missing from it. One missing day makes the seven- may forget to count at night but remember the following day week count incomplete, and therefore, if one missed a (before sunset) or a person may forget to count for an entire 24 complete day of counting, they need not bother counting hour period. anymore at all. On the other hand, Rav Hai Gaon and the Ri interpret the word “temimot/complete” as referring to each Regarding the first scenario, where one forgot to count at individual day, thereby necessitating the count to begin at night but remembered the next day before sunset, we must night, but also ruling that yesterday’s count, or lack thereof, look at two mishnayot that seem to present opposite has no bearing on one’s ability to count today. Meiri presents perspectives. The mishna in Menachot (71a) states that the a novel position. He suggests that the verse’s requirement that barley that would be used in the korban omer was supposed to the count be “temimot/complete” is a separate mitzvah, that be cut at night, but if that task was neglected, it could be cut ideally should be added on to the mitzvah of the counting1. the next morning. However, the mishna in Megillah (20b) With these explanations in place, Rav Hai Gaon, Ri and Meiri simply states that “all night is fitting for cutting the barley for (though for different reasons) all rule that if one missed an the korban omer”. This mishna seems to leave no room for entire day of counting, they may still continue counting the cutting it in the morning. The commentators struggle to next night with a blessing. understand these two, potentially disagreeing, texts. Behag, Rambam and Meiri lean towards the mishna in Menachot and Conceptually, as explained by the Tur and the Beit Yosef say that if one neglected to count at night, they may do so in (Or HaChaim 489) what is being debated is whether Sefirat the morning with a blessing. On the opposing side, Rabbeinu HaOmer is one long mitzvah, with 49 parts, a position the Tam and the Semag follow the literal interpretation of the Behag would seemingly support, or if Sefirat HaOmer is 49 mishna in Megillah and say that one may not count at all the separate and independent mitzvoth, a position Rav Hai Gaon next day, if they didn’t count at night. Others (Mordechai, and the Ri would seemingly agree with. Tosafot, Raavia…) take a middle position, allowing one to count the next day however without the preceding blessing. There is much more to say on this topic, and Rav This is the position that is codified in Shulchan Aruch (Or Soloveitchik’s thoughtful approach should be considered, but HaChaim 489:7), and is what has become normative practice. space constraints force me to leave that for another time.

In such a scenario, the Terumah HaDeshen (#37) rules Practically speaking, if one forgot an entire day, the count that that evening, one definitely should continue counting with should be continued the next night, but a blessing should not a blessing. This is normative practice and is also the position be said. However, since there are definitely opinions, as stated of the Mishna Berurah (489:34), though it is worth noting that above, that still view this incomplete counting as a full-blown the Pri disagrees, and says that for the rest of the fulfillment of the mitzvah, every effort should be made to still nights, counting should be done without a beracha. The take the obligation seriously and to count daily, even if it is Terumat HaDeshen advocates this because it is possible that being done without the preceding blessing. the mitzvah applies all day (not just at night- as seen from the mishna in Menachot). He also adds that even if the mishna in Megillah is the primary text, it is possible that each day there

1 This is similar to the position of Rambam, that I discussed in to lean during certain parts of the Seder as an independent my shiur over the first days of Pesach, that views the obligation mitzvah, and not tied to the fulfillment of the mitzvah being done (e.g. eating matza). A MESSAGE FROM THE COORDINATOR OF WOMEN’S ENGAGEMENT Sara Frieberg Coordinator of Women’s Engagement [email protected]

On April 12th, we are excited to be hosting a special informative evening about genetic diseases and screening with JScreen. Abby Nagler, a young member of our shul, has been interning with this fantastic organization and is bringing this exciting program to our community. All who attend the zoom event will be entitled to a discount on the JScreen genetic screening. This is a very important opportunity for people of all ages and stages to learn about the importance of genetic diseases in our community so they can inform themselves and their friends and family. Abby was kind enough to provide us with some information about the program. We hope to see you there!

About JScreen JScreen is a non-profit at-home education and carrier screening program for Jewish genetic diseases. JScreen’s goal is to prevent genetic diseases by improving access to genetic testing through online, at-home saliva tests. JScreen makes genetic screening simple, accessible, and affordable. Since 2013, JScreen’s primary focus has been reproductive carrier screening for diseases that occur more commonly in the Jewish population, such as Tay-Sachs, as well as diseases that occur in the general population, such as cystic fibrosis. JScreen now also offers cancer genetic testing for BRCA and other genes to determine one’s risk for hereditary cancers.

Why get tested? The purpose of the ReproGEN test is to let couples who plan on starting or expanding their families know if they are carriers of genetic diseases, such as Tay-Sachs, Cystic Fibrosis, and Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, that could impact their children‘s health. JScreen tests for over 200 genetic conditions that are common in different Jewish groups and in the general population, including interfaith and inter-ethnic couples. At risk-couples have many options to help them plan for the health of their future children. The vast majority of children with these diseases are born to parents who have no family history of the disease. Screening allows singles and couples to know ahead of time that they are at-risk and to take steps toward having healthy children. Some people choose to get tested before dating, others during, and some after an engagement.

The purpose of the CancerGEN test is to give people information about mutations in their genes which put them at a higher risk of developing breast, ovarian, pancreatic, and over 40 other types of cancer. When a person knows that they carry one of these mutations before they develop cancer, they can take advantage of available options for medical management and cancer risk reduction.

As an intern for JScreen, and a young member of our community who recently got tested, I cannot stress how simple the whole process is. JScreen’s team will help you through every step of the way, and make sure you feel prepared for future possibilities. Through genetic testing and genetic counseling, JScreen helps people plan for their health, and the health of their future families.

You don’t want to miss this Zoom lecture- whether you’re single, dating, or married, there will be life-saving information presented that applies to the entire family.

YOUNG ISRAEL OF HOLLYWOOD-FT. LAUDERDALE APRIL 2021 PAGE 17 QUESTIONS & ANSWERS Sefirat HaOmer Edition

Q: I observe the “second half” of Sefira. Can I attend a wedding after Lag B’Omer, ie after the conclusion of the “first half” custom of Sefira?

A: Rav (Igrot Moshe 159) writes that you are permitted to attend and even dance at the wedding. He explains that the prohibition of getting married during Sefira belongs only to the bride and groom; and when they are permitted to marry, others are permitted to attend. Rav Shlomo Zalman Auerbach agrees with this ruling. He himself would also travel to weddings after Lag B’Omer, even though he was still keeping Sefira.

Q: This year Lag B’Omer falls out on Thursday night/ Friday. Are there any special halachot related to this occurrence?

A: While there is a difference of opinion whether weddings can take place on the evening of Lag B’Omer (the Mishnah Berurah is strict while Rav Moshe Feinstein permits it), when Lag B’Omer occurs on Friday, even the Mishnah Berurah permits weddings on that Thursday night. Also, in general Sephardic practice is to only get a haircut on the 34th day of the Omer, ie after Lag B’Omer. However, if Lag B’Omer occurs on Friday, Sephardim will get haircuts on Friday L’Kavod Shabbat (Shulchan Aruch OC 493:2).

Q: When is the earliest time to count Sefirat HaOmer?

A: The Shulchan Aruch notes that ideally one would wait until after Tzeit HaKochavim to count Sefira. Tosfot (Menachot 66a) holds that in the absence of the Omer offering, Sefirat HaOmer is a Rabbinic mitzvah. As such, we can be lenient and count Sefira (with a bracha) from Bein Hashmashot, ie after Shkiya. Rav Ovadia Yosef writes that the custom in Yerushalayim is to count Sefira during Bein Hashmashot. Rav Soloveitchik is quoted as ruling that one may rely on Tosfot and count Sefira after Shkiya. Everyone agrees that even though you can daven Maariv after Plag Hamincha, one should not count Sefira at that time. If you attend the Plag Minyan at shul, please remember to count Sefira later, after it gets dark.

Q: I am not sure whether I counted Sefirat HaOmer yesterday. Can I continue to count with a bracha?

A: If you are sure that you missed a day of Sefira, then you should continue to count without a bracha. However if you are not sure whether or not you counted, then you should continue to count WITH a bracha.

What is Ohr Hatorah Yeshiva High School of South Florida?

professionally run four-year college preparatory yeshiva Ahigh school program for boys, Ohr Hatorah features a complete comple- ment of regular and honors tracks in both Limudei Kodesh and college-preparatory secular classes. With A.P. classes, SAT Prep, as well as college and Israel Yeshiva guidance, our graduates will undoubtedly be accepted into both the finest Yeshivot in Israel as well as prestigious Colleges and Univer- sities worldwide. With a full series of extra-curricular ac- tivities such as Shabbatonim, Mishmarim, fantastic trips, clubs, sports, and more, our Yeshiva will enrich the academic, social, and emotional needs of our student body! With high academic expectations in both Limudei Kodesh and secular studies, along with focus and defined expectation of behavior and midot, set within a frame- work of a true Torah environment, we are able to offer that intangible “Je ne sais quoi” which only a yeshiva with a high level of personalized attention can supply. As a proud pro-Israel institution, we encourage our graduates to spend at least one year studying in top-quality Israeli Ye- shivot before returning and receiving the best college education possible. Built for the needs of South Florida’s diverse demographics, both of Ashkenaz- ic and Sephardic heritage, our new, warm and inviting environment is a unique and exceptional opportunity in which a young man can grow, learn, and become a ben-Torah, all while receiving a sterling secular education in a safe and wholesome way. Please feel free to call us if you have any questions or would like to set up an interview.
