Ariadne Auf Naxos Soile Isokoski ∙ Sophie Koch Jochen Schmeckenbecher ∙ Johan Botha
RICHARD STRAUSS ARIADNE AUF NaXOS SOILE ISOKOSKI ∙ SOPHIE KoCH JOCHEN SCHMECKENBECHER ∙ JOHAN BOTHA ORCHESTER DER WIENER STAATSOPER conducted by CHRISTIAN THIELEMANN staged by SVEN-ERIC BECHTOLF WIENER STAATSOPER RICHARD STRAUSS ARIADNE AUF NaXOS Orchestra Orchester der Wiener Staatsoper Here is one of the truly overwhelming successes in recent opera Conductor Christian Thielemann history: Christian Thielemann’s sensational return to the Vienna State Stage Director Sven-Eric Bechtolf Opera to conduct his first-ever performances there of Richard Strauss, with an ideal cast in an acclaimed production of Ariadne auf Naxos. “A triumph [...] world stars and ensemble shine” (Die Presse). “Strauss Primadonna (Ariadne) Soile Isokoski in all his glory”(Wiener Zeitung). “Festival standard [...] electrifying The Composer Sophie Koch excitement” (Kronen Zeitung). A Music Teacher Jochen Schmeckenbecher The Tenor (Bacchus) Johan Botha Director Sven-Erich Bechtolf “has again delved deeply into music Zerbinetta Daniela Fally and text”, observed the opera magazine Opernnetz in its rave review Harlequin Adam Plachetka of the performance captured here. “In Rolf Glittenberg’s beautiful Scaramuccio Carlos Osuna Jugendstil salon, he is constantly in touch with the heartbeat of the Truffaldin Jongmin Park story [...] For Bechtolf it is the subtle development of the characters Brighella Benjamin Bruns and their relationships with each other, as well as the work’s delicate The Dancing Master Norbert Ernst irony, that remain of paramount importance. As Ariadne, Soile Isokoski radiates enchanting vocal beauty as she forms endless nuances in one The Major-Domo Peter Matić blossoming phrase after another. Daniela Fally sings the gruellingly Lackey Marcus Pelz difficult part of Zerbinetta with great flexibility, acting it with nonchalant A Wigmaker Won Cheol Song coquettishness. -

***** ***** ***** Newsletter 315 June/July
The Richard Wagner Society of South Australia Inc. NEWSLETTER 315 JUNE/JULY 2021 Patron: Deborah Humble We hope our members are all keeping safe, healthy and warm? The situation can change within a day, but we expect that the Society’s next event, the Brian Coghlan Memorial Lecture, will be held on the evening of Monday 9 August at 7.30 pm. in the Clayton Wesley Memorial Church at Beulah Park. For this year’s lecture, James Koehne is to speak on: The Grand Opéra of Paris: The Lost Legacy of the Nineteenth Century Spectacular. We are inviting other groups to this lecture, and some have already promoted it quite widely. Clayton Church, a new venue for the Society, is quite large, but bookings are still required. See P. 2 for details. ***** Wagner’s birthday celebration with a screening of Der Rosenkavalier and lunch at Living Choice Fullarton proved very popular indeed. See the review of that on P.3, along with a couple of other reports. ***** We were hoping to hold at least one other major event later this year, but getting it organised has proved very difficult. However, the Society is obliged to have an Annual General Meeting each year, a pre-Christmas lunch is always popular, and there are plans for a casual event in warmer weather. The dates for these will be announced later. Also, while it’s impossible to be certain, Opera Australia’s Brisbane Ring Cycle will probably still be going ahead in October and November. ***** P1: Next events P4: Tributes P2: Invitation to The Brian Coghlan P5: Article “The Ringheads”. -

Sir Colin Davis Discography
1 The Hector Berlioz Website SIR COLIN DAVIS, CH, CBE (25 September 1927 – 14 April 2013) A DISCOGRAPHY Compiled by Malcolm Walker and Brian Godfrey With special thanks to Philip Stuart © Malcolm Walker and Brian Godfrey All rights of reproduction reserved [Issue 10, 9 July 2014] 2 DDDISCOGRAPHY FORMAT Year, month and day / Recording location / Recording company (label) Soloist(s), chorus and orchestra RP: = recording producer; BE: = balance engineer Composer / Work LP: vinyl long-playing 33 rpm disc 45: vinyl 7-inch 45 rpm disc [T] = pre-recorded 7½ ips tape MC = pre-recorded stereo music cassette CD= compact disc SACD = Super Audio Compact Disc VHS = Video Cassette LD = Laser Disc DVD = Digital Versatile Disc IIINTRODUCTION This discography began as a draft for the Classical Division, Philips Records in 1980. At that time the late James Burnett was especially helpful in providing dates for the L’Oiseau-Lyre recordings that he produced. More information was obtained from additional paperwork in association with Richard Alston for his book published to celebrate the conductor’s 70 th birthday in 1997. John Hunt’s most valuable discography devoted to the Staatskapelle Dresden was again helpful. Further updating has been undertaken in addition to the generous assistance of Philip Stuart via his LSO discography which he compiled for the Orchestra’s centenary in 2004 and has kept updated. Inevitably there are a number of missing credits for producers and engineers in the earliest years as these facts no longer survive. Additionally some exact dates have not been tracked down. JULES MASSENET – His Life and Works by Nick Fuller I
JULES MASSENET – His Life and Works By Nick Fuller I. Introduction Jules Massenet’s operas made him one of the most popular composers of the late nineteenth century, his works performed throughout Europe, the Americas and North Africa. After World War I, he was seen as old- fashioned, and nearly all of his operas, apart from Werther and Manon , vanished from the mainstream repertoire. The opera-going public still know Massenet best for Manon , Werther , and the Méditation from Thaïs , but to believe, as The Grove Dictionary of Opera wrote in 1954, that ‘to have heard Manon is to have heard all of him’ is to do the composer a gross disservice. Massenet wrote twenty-seven operas, many of which are at least as good as Manon and Werther . Nearly all are theatrically effective, boast beautiful music and display insightful characterisation and an instinct for dramatic and psychological truth. In recent decades, Massenet’s work has regained popularity. Although he Figure 1 Jules Massenet, drawing by Ernesto Fontana (Source: is not the household name he once http://artlyriquefr.fr/personnages/Massenet%20Jules.html) was, and many of his operas remain little known, he has been winning new audiences. Conductors like Richard Bonynge, Julius Rudel and Patrick Fournillier have championed Massenet, while since 1990 a biennial Massenet festival has been held in his birthplace, Saint-Étienne, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, its mission to rediscover Massenet’s operas. His work has been performed in the world’s major opera houses under the baton of conductors Thomas Beecham, Colin Davis, Charles Mackerras, Michel Plasson, Riccardo Chailly and Antonio Pappano, and sung by Joan Sutherland, José van Dam, Frederica von Stade, Nicolai Gedda, Roberto Alagna, Renée Fleming, Thomas Hampson and Plácido Domingo. -

The production, directed by Stan Lai with visual designs by Oscar-winner Tim Yip, will appear on tour co-produced by Poly Theatre Management Co., Ltd. and Armstrong International Music & Arts Enterprises, Ltd., traveling to three Chinese cities in six performances. The tour opens with two performances at Beijing’s Poly Theatre on September 8 and 9. The work will then be presented as part of the grand opening of the Meixihu International Culture and Arts Centre Grand Theatre in the southern city of Changsha on September 15 and 16. Designed by the late Zaha Hadid, the Meixihu complex was among the noted British Iraqi-born architect’s last projects before her sudden death in March 2016. The third and final stop will be the Qintai Grand Theatre in Wuhan on September 22 and 23. Based on China’s literary epic, Dream of the Red Chamber had its world premiere at San Francisco Opera (which originally commissioned the work) on September 10, 2016, playing to capacity crowds at San Francisco’s War Memorial Opera House. -
