Hall [a]Introduction The contribution of aviation to climate change is, with a global share of just 2 per cent of emissions of CO 2 (see chapter 2, this volume), often regarded as negligible. This perspective ignores, however, the current and expected growth in air traffic, as well as its socio-cultural drivers. Aviation is a rapidly growing sector, with annual passenger growth forecasts of 4.9 per cent in the coming 20 years (Airbus 2008) In a carbon-constrained world with the ambition to reduce absolute levels of greenhouse gas emissions and limited options to technically achieve these (see chapter 13, this volume), the growth in air traveller numbers thus indicates an emerging conflict (see also chapter 4, this volume) Moreover, it becomes increasingly clear that aviation is an activity in which comparably few people participate. With regard to international aviation, it can be estimated that only about 2-3 per cent of the world’s population fly in between any two countries over one consecutive year (Peeters et al 2006), indicating that participation in air travel is highly unequally distributed on a global scale. The vast majority of air travellers currently originate from industrialized countries, even though there are some recent trends, particularly in China and India, showing rapid growth in air travel (cf. UNWTO 2007) There is also evidence that air travel is unevenly distributed within nations, particularly those with already high levels of individual mobility. In industrialized countries there is evidence of a minority of highly mobile individuals, who account for a large share of the overall kilometres travelled, especially by air. -

Despite the increased number of people who travel with access requirements, the sector still lacks an understanding of the expectations and experiences of access tourists. Accessible tourism covers an array of impairments from people who are immobile, visually impaired, an invisible impairment, parents with pushchairs, and seniors. The purpose of this study was to understand the expectations and experiences of the access consumer to suggest improvements for accessibility for the New Zealand tourism sector. The social model of disability was adopted to examine the sector and framed the semi-structured interviews with access consumers. Key results identified from the data were the need to achieve dignity in service offerings to gain experiences that facilitate independence and equity of access, access to information before the travel that is clear and accurate to aid planning, and accessible transport and education. In conclusion, the paper calls for the New Zealand tourism industry to align with the Disability Strategy sustainability goals to achieve equity and inclusion and create enjoyable accessible experiences in their tourist offerings. -

Since its outbreak in Wuhan (China), it has turned into one of the major challenges affecting the whole world. In a comparatively short time, the virus outbreak turned into a pandemic that led to massive negative impacts not only on people health and well-being, but also on the global economy, travel industry, pharmaceutical industry, tourism industry, and many other industries. This research paper aims to investigate the different effects of coronavirus on the global Halal tourism and Halal hospitality industry and whether the coronavirus pandemic is the end of Halal tourism and hospitality as we know it or not. The paper offers an in-depth theoretical examination of the different aspect of the pandemic on Halal tourism and hospitality industry and provides guidance on how to address these different aspects. The current paper is one of very few research papers addressing coronavirus on the tourism and hospitality industry. World Tourism Day Celebrations on 27th September 2017 Tourism Awareness Rally The World Tourism day is celebrated on 27th September every year by the United Nations World Tourism Organization located in the Madrid, the Capital of Spain. The travel establishments such as travel agencies, airlines offices, tour operators etc and hospitality establishments such as Hotels, Restaurants etc also celebrate in their locations. The Department of Tourism, Government of Tamil Nadu organized a tourism awareness rally involving the stakeholders of Tourism and the students from educational institutions offering courses in tourism and hospitality in each city. The District Tourism Office, Madurai, The District Administration, Madurai and the students of Centre for Tourism and Hotel Management jointly organized a rally. They went through important streets around the world famous Meenakshi Amman Temple in Madurai and created awareness about the significance of tourism. Thooyimai Madurai (Clean Madurai) As a part of Swacchh Bharath (Clean India Campaign) Celebrations launched by the Prime Minister of India, the District Tourism Office, Madurai, the District Local Administration and other organizations involved in tourism launched this campaign in Madurai. The Staff and Students of the Centre for Tourism and Hotel Management were involved in cleaning of the places of tourism interest in Madurai such as Meenakshi Amman temple and Thirumalai Naciker Mahal. Mr. Balamurugan, District Tourist Officer, Mr. Anbarasu, Assistant Tourist Officer, Dr. J. Balan, Dr. R. Kannan, and Dr. A. Apsara Saleth Mary, faculty of the Centre stressed the need for maintaining sanitation and the cleanliness in order to attract domestic and International tourist. Quiz competition is also conducted and our students won prizes for answering many questions. -

SCIENCE-BASED T A R G E T S WTTC HARVARD LEARNING INSIGHTS WTTC × HARVARD LEARNING INSIGHTS | BEHAVIOURAL ECONOMICS WTTC HARVARD LEARNING INSIGHTS SCIENCE-BASED TARGETS Setting science-based targets in Travel & Tourism OVERVIEW THE IMPACTS OF A CHANGING CLIMATE are apparent worldwide. For the global community to avoid irreversible damage to prosperity, people and planet, temperature rise must be limited to 1.5°C above pre- industrial levels. This requires halving global greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and meeting net-zero emissions by 2050. Science-based targets have become the globally accepted standard for companies setting carbon reduction targets. Targets are considered science-based if they align with the latest climate science on meeting the goals of the 2015 Paris Agreement1. This agreement saw almost 200 countries sign up to keep global warming well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels, pursuing efforts to hold it at no more than 1.5°C. As stated in the 2018 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Special Report on Global Warming2, the transition to a sustainable, low carbon economy must be accelerated globally to hold warming to 1.5°C. The contribution of the Travel & Tourism sector to the global carbon footprint is well recognised and the necessity to cut its greenhouse gas emissions has been highlighted in several international agreements (Djerba3 & Davos4 Declarations). Travel & Climate action is a clear priority for Travel & Tourism and one it has begun to address given its contribution to greenhouse gas emissions through transport, accommodation, and other tourist activities. The sector needs to focus on greenhouse gas emissions associated with its specific products and services in setting science-based targets. -

The effectiveness and the limitations of offset programs, such as planting or protecting trees, have been evaluated by the authors of this article. It was found that most offset programs do not have the impact that is suggested. 85 percent of offset projects have a high likelihood of overestimating their effectiveness and not being additional, meaning that the project activity would have occurred even if it was not implemented as an offset project. Moreover, estimated emissions and offset costs provided by various travel companies vary greatly and are often far lower than what would be considered fair compensation. It is argued that offering offsetting as a simple, cheap option to compensate for travel emissions will help continue business as usual, with no incentive for real change and with no serious contribution to the Paris Agreement. Travellers looking for a way to address their travel impact are advised to reduce emissions first, with compensation only as a last resort. -
