PN I)OUND IN IT S ~L ATIONSHIP T O ~HU,\CH }3ELLS. ~ KNOWLEDGE of the physical laws which ~ govern the production of musical sounds is ~ very necessary to the makers of all musical ~oJ instruments but especially so to bell-founders 'l' and a brief outline of these laws forms a fitting introduction to any work on bells and bell-founding. The proportions which strings of various lengths bear to the pitch of the tones which they produce were discovered by Pythagoras (circa B.C. 500) whose musical scale tuned throughout by fifths accords very nearly with the temperate scale to which piano-fortes etc. are tuned at the present day but is inferior to the theoretically perfect scale. It is however to the discoveries and researches made during the past century and more especially during the past twenty years that we owe the greater portion of the infor- 4 of the instruments themselves impart the necessary impulses to the surrounding atmosphere. The (!l:baptn I. simplest of these instruments is a tuning fork which may be considered as an elastic double pendulum. On Sound in its relationship to This when struck sharply may be seen to be in Church Bells. vibration and from its construction as a pendulum the regularity of its vibrations are insured. Again from its being so little liable to variation the number of its vibrations in a second are likely to remain permanently the same. For this reason it has been chosen as the general standard of reference for the pitch of all other instruments. But unfortunately the makers of tuning forks in this and other countries have not yet adopted an universal standard pitch so that the nominal pitch of a note varies con­ siderably in these as in other musical instruments. Most treatises on acoustics give 256 vibrations a second for middle C which would allow the A tuning fork to have 256 X %= 426i vibrations but the International Commission convened for the purpose and held at Paris about a quarter century since gave 435 as the number of vibrations in a second which should be considered as the universal standard A. Although this standard has not yet been adopted its desirability is evident when we find that at Paris in the year 1700 the standard A was only 4-05 a second later on it rose to 425 in 1855 it was 440 and in 1857 it rose to 448. In Berlin it is now 448 at Milan 45 I i and at Covent Garden London 455. This last number 5 IS very convenient for a standard English pitch as it allows the length of all the organ pipes in C to <rr:bapter JL be an exact number of English feet (see Note r) e.g. On Sound in a large organ the length of the lowest C pipe in its relationship to from its embouchure to end = 16 feet the next Church Bells. octave above = 8 feet the next 4- feet and so on upwards in all open pipes half the length of pipe giving the next octave above. But this pitch is a half note sharper than C with 256 vibrations in a second and in published accounts of the weights dimensions and notes of church bells sometimes the sharper and at others the flatter of these two pitches is referred to in naming the notes. This probably arises from the flatter pitch being nearer to the mediseval and traditionary pitoh of the bells, and is therefore still retained for old bells while new ones are named from the modern concert pitch. This will explain many of the seeming contradictions often met with in the lists of weights diameters and notes of bells (see Note 2). NOTE I.-The velocity of sound in a second divided by the number of vibrations of a given note in a second would give its wave length one half of which is the length required for an open organ pipe to produce the same note. If A = 455 C should equal 455 -i- %= 273 vibrations in a second. The velocity of sound may be taken at 1093 ft. a second therefore the length of an organ pipe to give the C next below the A tunin g fork of 455 should be ~ ('Nz' ft. ) = 2 ft. The C one octave below requires 4 ft. two octaves below g ft. and three octaves below 16 ft. This would also make the standard A = 1.7~ x 1.' or 440 . Professor Pietro Blaserna of the Royal University of Rome is of opinion that the gradual rise in the musical pitch which has now been going on for more than a century has been caused by the makers of musical instruments continually endeavouring to increase the brilliancy of the tone of their instruments but Professor Dolbear of Tufts College U.S.A. has a very ingenious theory respecting it which is however more ingenious than reliable. In his work on the Telephone p. 66 he says " During the past century there has been quite a steady rise in the standard pitch and th is has been brought about in a very curious and unexpected way. The tuning fork has been the instrument to preserve the pitch ** * But a tuning fork is brought to its pitch with a file which warms it somewhat so that at the moment it is in tune with th e standard that is being duplicated it is above its normal temperature and when it cools its tone rises.

  • History of the Old St. Martin Bells We Know That There Were Three Bells In
    History of the Old St. Martin Bells We know that there were three bells in 1552. The so-called Edwardian Inventory of that year lists “iij litle belles a saunce bell”. One of the mediaeval bells survives as the third bell in the present ring, inscribed with a dedication to St.Martin. This bell has distinctive gothic lettering with a cross and fleur- de-lis mark found on several bells found mainly in churches in or near Staffordshire. On the basis of their geographical distribution H.B. Walters conjectured that they were cast at Lichfield, suggesting a date “not later than 1350” and linking them with a founder named Henry Mitchell mentioned in 1313 This is all very tenuous, however, and the shape of this bell and its mouldings suggest a much later date towards the end of the fourteenth century or later. Walters also suggests that this ancient bell may have been the tenor of the pre-Reformation ring. He cites no evidence, and whether or not this is so is unclear. We do know, however, that the bells were augmented to five and probably increased in weight in 1638-40 through the generosity of Robert Durant and Sir Robert Berkeley. Durant paid for the casting (or recasting) of two bells, now the fourth and fifth dated 1638. Sir Robert is said to have laid out over £100 in mending and increasing the ring of bells in 1640, at which time he caused a new treble and a new tenor to be made. This evidently refers to the predecessor of the present second (recast in 1833) and the tenor, which was known as Berkeley’s bell.

    St Luke’s Farnworth BELL CASTING by Geoffrey Poole In the earliest days they were cast in different sizes to produce different notes but no attempt was made to tune bells until the 16th Century with the advent of change ringing. In those times bells were roughly tuned – where the inside of the bell or the edge of the lip was chipped away with a hammer and chisel – eight bells could be tuned to an octave of eight notes. Some deprived communities used a hagiosideron, a shaped piece of metal which was struck in a similar way to a bell. Also again due to lack of money bellcotes were used instead of costly towers. A bell-cot, bell-cote or bellcote is a small framework and shelter for one or more bells. Bellcotes are most common in church architecture but are also seen on institutions such as schools. The bellcote may be carried on brackets projecting from a wall or built on the roof of chapels or churches that have no towers. The bellcote often holds the Sanctus bell that is rung at the consecration of the Eucharist. Bellcote is a compound noun of the words bell and cot or cote. Bell is self-explanatory. The word cot or cote is Old English, from the Germanic. It means a shelter of some kind, especially for birds or animals (see dovecote), a shed, or stall.   • The Bells, Clock and Carillon of Worcester Cathedral
    The bells, clock and carillon of Worcester Cathedral. Statement of Significance General overview The whole ensemble of clock, carillon and bells (these since recast) was very much a great Victorian showpiece - a wonder of the age. It cost £5000 (£566,000 today) and was paid for by the Earl of Dudley. It was a hugely ambitious project - a co-ordinated inter-disciplinary scheme (new bells, clock and carillon all at the same time) and on an impressively large scale. Everything was done to the very highest technical standards of the time - taking advantage of the latest innovations and at the same time breaking new ground in applying skills and knowledge to create an installation on a scale not previously contemplated or realised. Installed as part of the great Victorian restoration of the Cathedral which took place chiefly between 1864 and 1874, the clock and bells scheme (with the carillon as an afterthought) was the brainchild of Canon Richard Cattley. Cattley who undertook the fund-raising also steered the whole project through from inception to completion, drawing on the expertise of the leading authorities of the day and working with experienced and innovative bellfounders and clockmakers best qualified to undertake such a challenging commission. Leuven: Leuven University Press, 2014, 368 pp. HE CARILLON IS HIDDEN IN plain sight: the instrument and its players cannot be found performing in concert halls, yet while carillonneurs and Tkeyboards are invisible, their towers provide a musical soundscape and focal point for over six hundred cities, neighborhoods, campuses, and parks in Europe, North America, and beyond. The carillon, a keyboard instrument of at least two octaves of precisely tuned bronze bells, played from a mechanical- action keyboard and pedalboard, and usually concealed in a tower, has not received a comprehensive historical treatment since André Lehr’s The Art of the Carillon in the Low Countries (1991). A Dutch bellfounder and campanologist, Lehr contributed a positivist history that was far-ranging and thorough. In 1998, Alain Corbin’s important study Village Bells: Sound and Meaning in the Nineteenth-Century French Countryside (translated from the 1994 French original) approached the broader field of campanology as a history of the senses.1 Belgian carillonneur and musicologist Luc Rombouts has now compiled his extensive knowledge of carillon history in the Netherlands, Belgium, and the United States, as well as of less visible carillon cultures from Curaçao to Japan, into Singing Bronze: A History of Carillon Music, the most valuable scholarly account of the instrument to date. Rombouts’s original Dutch book, Zingend Brons (Leuven: Davidsfonds, 2010), is the more comprehensive version of the two, directed at a general readership in the Low Countries familiar with carillon music, and at carillonneurs and music scholars.

    CHURCH BELLS A ring of bells will typically involve 1 to 5 tons of moving metal and so should be considered as heavy machinery. Full-circle ringing puts the greatest demands on the bellframe and tower. To carry the large forces created, the bellframe should be as stiff as possible and should be rigidly attached to the tower, otherwise the bells will be difficult to control. Problem Areas In general, neglect does far more damage than regular use. Attention to the following will do much to keep the bell installation in good order: easy safe access ample lighting (2 x 5' fluorescents as a minimum, more in a large belfry) attention to cleanliness exclusion of rain - immediate repair of roof leaks or broken louvres exclusion of birds - all openings fitted with galvanised heavy wire mesh. Accumulations of dirt and bird droppings, especially when damp, encourage decay of timber and corrosion of ironwork. The main supporting beams are particularly susceptible to this; the ends of timber beams built into damp masonry are prone to rot. Bolts may be fractured by rust build-up and lamination of steel beams; such build-up underneath cast iron frame members can break off their flanges. With bells hung outside, corrosion of ironwork is worsened and timber headstocks deteriorate more rapidly. Access for maintenance is often awkward. Heavily galvanised or stainless steel headstocks and fittings should be considered where regular painting would be impractical. Bells may be cracked by: Cast-in crown staples. The iron corrodes and expands, putting the crown of the bell in tension, and a crack then starts.

    St Mary the Virgin Buckland a guide to our church PREFACE In 1975/1976 Richard Copus, who was then a student at Buckland College, compiled a comprehensive survey incorporating an account of the Architectural, Structural and Social history of Buckland church. His work provided both the stimulus for the first booklet and the greater part of its contents. This third edition incorporates additional information that has since come to light as well as more recent changes in the fabric of the church. A glossary and explanation of heraldic terms used herein has also been included. Richard Copus made extensive use of Charles Keyser's article in the Berkshire Archaeological Journal of January 1907, which included many interesting photographs of the church around 1900.
