Healthy Happy Attitudes HEALTHY HAPPY ATTITUDES Harrietstown Housing Authority Volume 16 Issue 11 www.harrietstownha.org November 2016 Sarah’s News As October comes to an end, I am reminded of the old saying about March – that it comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb. October has done just the opposite – it came in like a lamb and is going out like a lion. I am striving to put aside my grumpiness over the shorter days, colder weather, and cloudy skies and EMBRACE the change. I WILL raise my head and face into the wind-driven rain, sleet, and snow! With the Halloween decorations brightening the Lake Flower Apartments’ first floor, it is easier to smile. Tenants, staff, and visi- tors are enjoying them. Thanks to all who contributed to the effort. The elevator upgrade project progresses. If work continues as planned, Elevator #1 will be finished next week; and, work on Ele- vator #2 will begin immediately. Again, if all goes as planned, we’ll ring in the New Year with two mechanically new elevators. Also at the Lake Flower Apartments, the new intercom system is in place. Maintenance staff are working out any problems as they are identified. If you have not yet touched base with Tammy about the system, please do so. On November 11, please take some time to remember and thank our veterans and their families. They have sacrificed so much for us. I know I’ll thank my 90-year old father, a veteran of World War II. Then, a couple of weeks after Veterans Day, it’s Thanksgiving – a time for overall gratitude and thanks. Cherish the time with family and friends. Veterans Day Reflections On Veterans Day, Remembrance Day, Armistice Day or the Day of Peace—this day has many names—the world stops in silence to pay tribute to the heroes of the battle- field who never see themselves as heroes. To that, I say we owe veterans more than our silence, our memories, our thanks. For the last century, we have celebrated our Veterans on this day. When the cannons of World War I were si- lenced, we thought we had fought the “war to end all wars,” but as history proved, we still needed our Soldiers. We are here to celebrate the strength, courage and dedi- cation of our veterans who not only wield the hammer of conflict but also shape the world for lasting peace. It takes a profound strength to wear this nation’s uni- form. Though one day they remove this uniform, no amount of time, nor strife can sever the golden thread uniting these veterans in a unique and everlasting bond.

  • Disney, Latino Children, and Television Labor
International Journal of Communication 10(2016), 2616–2636 1932–8036/20160005 Starlets, Subscribers, and Beneficiaries: Disney, Latino Children, and Television Labor CHRISTOPHER CHÁVEZ ALEAH KILEY University of Oregon, USA Children’s television networks are invested with moral value not attributed to other networks, yet they depend on the labor of children to advance their economic goals. Using a case study approach of Disney’s cable channels, we found that Latino children perform labor on behalf of the corporation in three ways: as subscribers to Disney’s cable networks, as actors in programming designed to deliver those subscribers, and as beneficiaries in the company’s corporate social responsibility efforts. We found that the logic by which Disney assigns various forms of labor to different types of Latino children helps to advance the company’s economic goals, rendering Latino children hypervisible in some spaces and invisible in others. Keywords: children’s television, Disney, Latino, labor, media industry In 2012, executives at Disney launched a minor firestorm when they debuted Sofia the First: Once Upon a Princess, a 90-minute animated film that was intended to launch a new series on the Disney Channel. The movie (and the franchise that followed) centers on a young common girl who, through her mother’s marriage, suddenly becomes a member of the monarchy. Very early on in the promotion of Sofia, however, the public began to suspect that Disney had coded the new princess as Latina. Both the spelling of Sofia’s name (vs. the more Anglicized “Sophia”) and the darker complexion of Sofia’s mother led reporters to ask producers whether the character was indeed Latina.

Abstract In 2012, Susan Cain published a nonfiction book: Quiet, The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking, in which she claimed that the modern western society was dominated by the Extrovert Ideal and it led to “a colossal waste of talent, energy, and happiness” (Cain, 2012, p.12). The concept of Extrovert Idea, according to her, is the “omnipresent belief that the ideal self is gregarious, alpha and comfortable in the spotlight” (Cain, 2012, p.4). Other psychologists and cultural historians also mentioned this cultural ideal, stating that it changed how people teach, how people work, how people interact with each other, and how people perceive themselves. Cain noticed a change in the characters portrayed in teen sitcoms: they are not the “children next door” of the 1980s; instead, they are rock stars and celebrities with extremely extroverted personalities.

From the cell to the pixel, explore how we understand ourselves in the modern world. CONTRIBUTOR VIET THANH NGUYEN Associate Professor of English and American Studies and Ethnicity Viet Thanh Nguyen’s 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction puts him in the illustrious company of such doyens of American literature as John Steinbeck, William Faulkner, Ernest Hemingway, Saul Bellow and Toni Morrison — all previous recipients. Nguyen won for his first novel, The Sympathizer (Grove Press, 2015), which explores the Vietnam War from multiple perspectives through the lens of his conflicted protagonist, an American-educated spy for the Viet Cong. “I went into this novel wanting to write without compromise, without worry- ing about what other people would think. The novel is meant to be provocative and critical of all sides in- volved in this war, so there is something here for ev- eryone to dislike,” Nguyen said. “It’s also meant to be as honest, truthful and painful a novel as I could write, and there was no way I could do that if I had to worry about what an audi- ence would think.” Nguyen said winning the Pulitzer felt like a victory. “I think this award marks the necessity in American literature for paying atten- tion to diverse voices that will illuminate American his- tory in important and chal- lenging ways for American audiences.” Nguyen hopes readers reflect on the idea that nurturing a single-sided viewpoint is what draws us into conflict and war.

But things didn’t turn out as planned as the political winds in Europe and the United States shifted recently from pro free trade to increased protectionism. President Donald Trump, after taking office early this year, indicated he wasn’t a big fan of multilateral free-trade accords. He quickly torpedoed the Trans-Pacific Partner- ship—the free-trade accord between the United States and 11 other Pacific Rim countries—and then threatened to tear up the 23-year-old North American Free-Trade Agreement. ➥ Free Trade page 3 Creativity Abounds in California’s Economy By Deborah Belgum Senior Editor California is the most creative place in the United States.
