  • Jane Eyre As a “Mirror of Culture”: Tracing Feminism Through Film
Jane Eyre as a “Mirror of Culture”: Tracing Feminism through Film Adaptation By Erin Nicole Mayo Honors Thesis Department of English and Comparative Literature University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill 2017 Approved: Table of Contents Introduction……………………………………………………………… 3 Chapter 1: 1943 Jane Eyre………………………………………………..4 Chapter 2: 1970 and 1983, and The Female Characters............................ 17 Chapter 3: 2011 and Austenmania……………………………………….33 Conclusion………………………………………………………………..44 2 Introduction Alan Dundes is well-known for his description of folklore as a “mirror of culture,” by which he means that the stories a society tells itself often reflect its collective fears, desires, and anxieties. Jane Eyre adaptations function in the same way by taking Brontë’s original story and adapting it to the current cultural climate, and, with so many interpretations over decades, we can extrapolate information about the producers and consumers from each new version. To this end, the films can be placed on a historical timeline, creating a narrative which illuminates the cultures or time periods in which each film was produced. I primarily trace the evolution of character interpretation—with some attention to cinematography—by categorizing the films into three loose categories, beginning with Stevenson’s 1943 version and culminating with Fukanaga’s adaptation released in 2011. The cinematography timeline moves from the aesthetic coldness of Gothic/film noir to the lush landscapes and warm colors invoked with the surge of period pieces in late twentieth century. With regard to character, I explore how features such as casting, personality, and character development contribute to the overall focus of the films. These two elements point to my primary argument: that the development of feminism has influenced the film interpretations of Jane Eyre, taking the narrative from a plot-based romance towards a character-driven tale of Jane’s personal growth.

“THE YOUNG WOMEN HERE ENJOY A LIBERTY”: PHILADELPHIA WOMEN AND THE PUBLIC SPHERE, 1760s-1840s By KATHARINE DIANE LEE A dissertation submitted to the Graduate School-New Brunswick Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey In partial fulfillment of the requirements For the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Graduate Program in History Written under the direction of Nancy Hewitt and Paul G. E. Clemens And approved by _______________________________________ _______________________________________ _______________________________________ _______________________________________ New Brunswick, New Jersey May 2016 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION “The Young women here enjoy a liberty”: Philadelphia Women and the Public Sphere, 1760s-1840s by KATHARINE DIANE LEE Dissertation Director: Nancy Hewitt This dissertation examines women’s access to and participation in the community life of Philadelphia in the decades surrounding the American Revolution. It argues against the application of separate spheres to late-colonial and early national Philadelphia and proposes that women were heavily integrated into nearly all aspects of the city’s public life. Women from diverse backgrounds were actively involved in commerce, politics, protest, intellectual and legal debates, social institutions, wartime developments, educational advancements, and benevolent causes. They saw themselves and were viewed by their peers as valuable members of a vibrant and complex city life. If we put aside assumptions about women’s limited relationship to the public sphere, we find a society in which women took advantage of a multitude of opportunities for participation and self-expression. This project also examines the disparity between the image of the ideal housewife and the lived experience of the majority of female Philadelphians. Idealized descriptions of Revolutionary women present a far more sheltered range of options than those taken advantage of by most actual women.

Compulsive Buying: A Qualitative Inquiry Mei-Lin Lawson A Clinical Research Project submitted to the faculty of the Hawai‘i School of Professional Psychology at Argosy University, Hawai‘i in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Psychology in Clinical Psychology Honolulu, Hawai‘i June 2018 © copyright 2018 by Mei-Lin Lawson All Rights Reserved Compulsive Buying: A Qualitative Inquiry Mei-Lin Lawson Hawai‘i School of Professional Psychology at Argosy University, Hawai‘i Abstract Although buying is part of our everyday lives, compulsive buying is a problem that is beginning to receive more attention. The objective of this study was to understand and learn about the processes that facilitate and maintain compulsive buying from the perspective of individuals who have engaged in this behavior through a transcendental phenomenological approach. Although the current literature on compulsive buying focuses on negative emotions, the intent was to broaden and deepen theory to include unique experiential insights from individuals who engage in compulsive buying. Two participants who identified themselves as compulsive buyers were interviewed. Results were presented in a personal narrative style and suggested similarities and differences among the two participants’ experiences. Findings from this qualitative inquiry demonstrate the nuances in the different perspectives of an issue that is often overlooked because financial behaviors are not openly discussed due to various reasons (e.g., shame, negative reactions from others, guilt, regret). It is hoped that this study highlights the benefits of talking about finances to promote emotional and financial well-being. Acknowledgement First of all, I would like to thank my participants for taking the time to share their stories with me.

HAPPILY EVER AFTER? REDEFINING WOMANHOOD AND MARRIAGE IN NINETEENTH-CENTURY NOVELS HAPPILY EVER AFTER? REDEFINING WOMANHOOD AND MARRIAGE IN NINETEENTH-CENTURY NOVELS A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Masters of Arts in English BY Laura Elizabeth Cox Ouachita Baptist University Bachelor of Arts in English, 2009 May 2012 University of Arkansas ABSTRACT Jane Austen, Elizabeth Gaskell, Charlotte Brontë, and Henry James challenged patriarchal conventions and assumptions by redefining womanhood and marriage in their novels, particularly by breaking from the traditional marriage ending. While Pride and Prejudice, North and South, and Jane Eyre end in marriage, these novels depict a freely chosen companionate marriage based on equality; Villette replaces the typical marriage ending with complete independence; and Washington Square and The Portrait of a Lady both portray the decisive rejection of the marriage ideal for a life of renunciation.

  • “It's Just Like Any Other Work, Honey”: Sex, Risk, and Control In
“IT’S JUST LIKE ANY OTHER WORK, HONEY”: SEX, RISK, AND CONTROL IN SERVICE WORK by EMILY VICTORIA KRUSE (Under the Direction of Linda Grant) ABSTRACT Using interviews with twenty-one current and former erotic laborers, this paper examines how workers control customers. Peepshow dancing, phone sex, club dancing, lingerie modeling, erotic massage, bachelor party stripping, escorting, and domination are presented within their organizational contexts. This evidence shows that erotic labor is not inherently alienating but rather depends on the organizational context. Workers whose organizations offer support, as well as workers whose occupations are structured around strong subcultural norms, tend to experience their work as empowering. Workers whose organizations offer little support or are anomic tend to construct their work as alienating. This paper also explores feminist theories on sexuality, concluding that, because they do not consider organizational contexts, they are inadequate tools for assessing the variation in workers’ experiences. INDEX WORDS: Service work, Sex work, Erotic labor, Organizational control, Workplace norms, Worker control, Feminist theory, Peepshows, Phone sex, Strip clubs, Exotic dancers, Lingerie models, Erotic massage, Bachelor party strippers, Escorts, Professional dominatrix, BDSM “IT’S JUST LIKE ANY OTHER WORK, HONEY”: SEX, RISK, AND CONTROL IN SERVICE WORK by EMILY VICTORIA KRUSE B.A., Indiana University 1999 A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate Faculty of The University of Georgia in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree MASTER OF ARTS ATHENS, GEORGIA 2002 ã 2002 Emily Victoria Kruse All Rights Reserved “IT’S JUST LIKE ANY OTHER WORK, HONEY”: SEX, RISK, AND CONTROL IN SERVICE WORK by EMILY VICTORIA KRUSE Approved: Major Professor: Linda Grant Committee: Linda Renzulli William Finlay Electronic Version Approved: Gordhan L.
