Funding for the Smithsonian Jazz Oral History Program NEA Jazz Master interview was provided by the National Endowment for the Arts. GEORGE AVAKIAN NEA JAZZ MASTER (2010) Interviewee: George Avakian (March 15, 1919 – November 22, 2017) Interviewer: Ann Sneed with recording engineer Julie Burstein Date: September 28, 1993 Repository: Archives Center, National Museum of American History Description: Transcript, 112 pp. Sneed: I’m Ann Sneed. We are in Riverdale. We’re interviewing George Avakian. There’s so many things to say about you, I’m just going to say George Avakian and ask you first, why jazz? Avakian: I think it happened because I was born abroad, and among the things that came into my consciousness as I was growing up was American popular music, and then it drifted in the direction of jazz through popular dance bands, such as the Casa Loma Orchestra, which I heard about through the guys who were hanging around the home of our neighbor at Greenwood Lake, which is where we went in the summers. We had a house on the lake. Our next-door neighbors had two daughters, one of whom was my age and very pretty, Dorothy Caulfield, who incidentally is responsible for Holden Caulfield’s last name, because J. D. Salinger got to know her and was very fond of her, named Holden after her family name. These boys came from the Teaneck area of New Jersey. So it was a short drive to Greenwood Lake on a straight line between New York and New Jersey. They had a dance band, the usual nine pieces: three brass, three saxophones, three rhythm.

  • 2017 High Sierra Music Festival Program
WELCOME! Festivarians, music lovers, friends old and new... WELCOME to the 27th version of our annual get-together! This year, we can’t help but look back 50 years to the Summer of Love, the summer of 1967, a year that brought us the Monterey Pop Festival (with such performers as Jimi Hendrix, The Who, Otis Redding, Janis Joplin and The Grateful Dead) which became an inspiration and template for future music festivals like the one you find yourself at right now. But the hippies of that era would likely refer to what’s going on in the political climate of these United States now as a “bad trip” with the old adage “the more things change, the more they stay the same” coming back into play. Here we are in 2017 with so many of the rights and freedoms that were fought long and hard for over the past 50 years being challenged, reinterpreted or revoked seemingly at warp speed. It’s high time to embrace the two basic tenets of the counterculture movement. First is PEACE. PEACE for your fellow human, PEACE within and PEACE for our planet. The second tenet brings a song to mind - and while the Beatles Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band gets all the attention on its 50th anniversary, it’s the final track on their Magical Mystery Tour album (which came out later the same year) that contains the most apropos song for these times. ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE. LOVE more, fear less. LOVE is always our answer. Come back to LOVE.

  • Viewpoints on the History of Digital Synthesis∗
Viewpoints on the History of Digital Synthesis∗ Julius O. Smith III Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA) Department of Music, Stanford University, Stanford, California 94305 USA December 28, 2005 1 Introduction In a highly stimulating Science article, Max Mathews painted an exciting vision of \the digital computer as a musical instrument" [7]. \Sound from numbers," it pointed out, was a completely general way to synthesize sound because the bandwidth and dynamic range of hearing are bounded: \any perceivable sound can be so produced." In The Technology of Computer Music [8], Mathews wrote \The two fundamental problems in sound synthesis are (1) the vast amount of data needed to specify a pressure function|hence the necessity of a very fast program|and (2) the need for a simple, powerful language in which to describe a complex sequence of sounds." Problem 1 has been solved to a large extent by the march of technology. Digital processor performance has increased at the rate of more than 40% per year for the past fifteen years, and the trend shows no sign of weakening. At present, multiple voices of many synthesis techniques can be sustained in real time on a personal computer. Problem 2 remains unsolved, and cannot, in principle, ever be completely solved. Since it takes millions of samples to make a sound, nobody has the time to type in every sample of sound for a musical piece. Therefore, sound samples must be synthesized algorithmically, or derived from recordings of natural phenomena. In any case, a large number of samples must be specified or manipulated according a much smaller set of numbers.

INDUCTION: TAUBA AUERBACH AND ÉLIANE RADIGUE This exhibition brings together two artists working in different artistic disciplines. Tauba Au- erbach (1981, San Francisco, CA) is a visual artist engaged in a variety of media, ranging from painting and photography to book design, weaving, glass, 3D printing, and musical instrument design. A student of classical music, Éliane Radigue (1932, Paris, France) is a composer of minimalist electro-acoustic music. This exhibition is the first iteration of a new series of two-person presentations at MOCA Cleveland called The Invitational, in which one artist invites another to collaborate. The format explores the relationships that exist be- tween artists across disciplines, countries, and historical contexts. Auerbach has long been interested in Radigue’s experimental music and shares many interests, from logic systems, to phenomenology, and Eastern philosophy. The two artists have been in dialogue over the past year over mail, email, and visits to Radigue’s home in Paris. Together they have choreographed an immersive exhibition that includes a rarely exhibited sound installation by Radigue and a new body of work created by Auerbach for this exhibition. OMNHT (1970) - an acronym for One More Night - is an early sound installation by Radigue that was intended to be felt, as much as heard. Presented for the first time in Galerie Rive Driot in 1970, this work has been installed only one other time, and never in the United States. The piece is designed in collaboration with sound engineer Bob Bielecki and uses more than sixty transducers (small speakers) positioned within the walls of the gallery to transmit sound.

  • Stevie Wonder's Musical Politics During the 1970S and 1980S a Thesis
UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Wonderful Words: Stevie Wonder’s Musical Politics During the 1970s and 1980s A thesis submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in African American Studies by Sandra Marie Kilman 2017 © Copyright by Sandra Marie Kilman 2017 ABSTRACT OF THE THESIS Wonderful Words: Stevie Wonder’s Musical Politics During the 1970s and 1980s by Sandra Marie Kilman Master of Arts in African American Studies University of California, Los Angeles, 2017 Professor Robin Davis Gibran Kelley, Chair The problem of racial injustice in the United States continued to plague the nation during the 1970s despite the gains made by the Civil Rights Movement during the preceding decades. Under Republican administrations during the 1970s and 1980s, working Americans encountered new financial challenges as the lion’s share of economic growth benefitted the wealthiest citizens. As socially and politically conscious popular music faded in popularity, Stevie Wonder continued to express his concerns about the obstacles to the promise of freedom and equality that many Americans continued to face. This paper examines four songs, written and performed by Wonder - “Living for the City,” “You Haven’t Done Nothing,” “Happy Birthday,” and “It’s Wrong,” - to track the trajectory of his commentary from local, community-based issues to national, political topics and, finally, to international causes. ii The thesis of Sandra Marie Kilman is approved. Richard Yarborough Shana Redmond Robin Davis Gibran Kelley, Committee Chair University of California, Los Angeles 2017 iii Acknowledgments This paper is dedicated to my family, whose love has sustained me throughout my life.

The rise of interest in heavy metal academically reflects the growth of the genre as a normal or con- tested part of everyday lives around the globe. The aim of this series is to provide a home and focus for the growing number of monographs and edited collections that analyse heavy metal and other heavy music; to publish work that fits within the emergent subject field of metal music studies; that is, work that is critical and inter-disciplinary across the social sciences and humanities; to publish work that is of interest to and enhances wider disciplines and subject fields across social sciences and the humanities; and to support the development of early career researchers through providing opportunities to convert their doctoral theses into research monographs.
