Library Update

At present we have more than 1,200 books in our temple library. We are proud of having a variety of collection. We have started with a policy of keeping maximum three copies of a given book. But we have many books with single or two copies. The list of the library books is on JSGD.org web page in library section.

It is safe to say that most of the members who come to temple for recent activities - celebrations and their darshan-puja purpose are aware of our library and its operation. We urge the members to make a good use of it and please drop your suggestions in the box (marked as books drop off box).

For further details please contact Mahendra J. Shah or Tarangben K Shah.

Article – JAINISM AND SCIENCE

Jainism is perhaps one of the most scientific religions in world and therefore it is still relevant to the society and the world. I do not find any contradiction between Jainism and science. It throws ample light on the real nature of substance or matter as propounded by Jain thinkers. Jain metaphysics approves of the scientific axiom that nothing is destructible. That means nothing can be created out of nothing, or out of something, which does not at all exist in one form or the other. The Jain doctrine is pertinent when it advocates that the universe is uncreated, real, eternal, and infinite with no beginning and end. The modern science has confirmed that this universe has automatic working process and the matter is never destroyed; it only undergoes changes into different states or modes. This is the law of nature.

The Jain thinkers expressed their views that plants and vegetables, earth, water, fire and air have souls and are endowed with only one sense organ of touch. Sir Jagdish Chand Basu had clearly proved in early 19th century in " Private life of Plant" through his scientific experiments beyond doubt that plants and all green vegetation also have life like human beings, and also experience feelings of joy, sorrow, anger, and fear like us. Webster and other scientists have already supported this view. Later on, Basu also proved the view of Jainism that there is life and growth in stones, which is also approved by scientists. The Sammurchana Jivas of Jainism are called abiogenists in science.

The Jain doctrine of Karma is fully substantiated by the obvious disparities among living creatures. This doctrine makes the transmigration of souls a proven fact, and establishes their continuity and immortality. The Karma doctrine of Jainism also does away with the necessity of any outside agency, an invisible all pervading, omnipotent and omniscient supreme being, creator, destroyer, preserver and dispenser of justice, for the purpose of punishing or rewarding living beings. Scientists also feel no need of any unknown hand to interfere with the automatic working of the universe.

The world-renowned great scientist Einstein in his work "The Theory of Relativity" has already supported the theory of Jainism.188. Scientists also support the theory of Lokakasa and Alokakasa of Jainism. Likewise, scientists on the basis of sound implements like gramophone, Radio and T.V., Casettes etc, prove its theory of sound or word as concrete. Like the Jainism, the European mathematicians Cantor Piano and Frege have accepted the reality of space and time.

Modern scientists had to assume an invisible element called "Ether" as the medium to transmit sounds and words across thousands of miles. This is the theory of and Adharma in Jainism, which has been propounded by Jain thinkers long ago. The most remarkable contribution of Jainism relates to their analysis of atomic linking or the mutual attraction of atoms in the formation of molecules.

The principle of vegetarian diet (Sakahara) and vegetables and food habits is also totally supported by medical doctors. Jainism ordains its followers to drink water after proper distillation with the view to avoid the killing of germs of water. Through microscopes scientists have found innumerous tiny germs invisible to the naked eye moving to and fro in water. Jainism lays stress on taking meals before sunset in defense of the vow of non-violence. The modern science also tells that after sunset many tiny living beings come into existence in the atmosphere. These beings enter our food and drinks, and thereby enter our digestive systems. The physicians and Ayurvedic literature also supported Jain's viewpoint on day dining.

Likewise, the principles of psychology, sociology, anthropology, biology, chemistry, mathematics and other branches of science may also be supported by Jain theories.

Kids Corner – Connect the dots to find out about Lanchan for one of the

Tirthankar

Jain Vani Kids Section– Story World Condition Once, a businessman went to a foreign country by plane. He was hopeful, that he will become very rich after doing business and marry, have children etc. But, when the plane was over the sea, it started raining heavily. The plane fell down into sea. The businessman started to swim. After some time, the businessman reached the shore and became unconscious. When he opened his eyes, he saw a forest in front of him. He thought about what to do and where to go. Then he finally went to one side. Suddenly, he saw an elephant coming towards him, making a loud noise. He got very scared. Then he remembered God and asked God to save him. At the same time, God's voice said," Oh human being first time today you have remembered God. Therefore, you will be protected." Hearing this, he went ahead twenty-five steps and saw a tree and, there were only two branches. Then, the elephant began to shake the tree with his trunk. The businessman became very scared. He looked down and saw a well. Inside that well, there were five snakes. He saw them and became wild and moved upwards. Then he saw two rats, one black, and a white one. They were cutting the very branch on which he was. Now he was very worried. The elephant shook the tree again. Unfortunately for him, there was beehive on the tree. The bees at once attacked him. The man cried for God's help. Some Gods, come there with their plane, and told the man to come with them, to heaven. Suddenly, a drop of honey fell into his mouth. In the sweetness of honey, he forgot the bees, the white and black rats, the five big snakes, and the gods call. The gods told him to come again but the man said, "Let me have one more drop of honey". The Gods told him again to come, but again the man said, "Please, let me take only one more drop". At last the Gods caught his hand and told him to come with them quickly, other wise, when they went, the branches will be cut down and he would fall in the well and the snakes would eat him.

The man understood and started to go with the Gods. At the same time, one more drop of honey fell in his mouth and forgot the Gods' call in its sweetness. He then said that he didn't want to go with them. The Gods went away. The elephant shook the tree and the rats cut the branches. The man fell down in the well and was eaten by the snakes. So ladies and gentlemen do you understand who was the businessman. The human being. What was the plane? A body. The businessman went with great hopes. You also plan for your future. What was the storm? The age end. What was the falling of the plane? The death. After falling of the plane in the sea, the man was swimming in the water.

In the same way, when a man dies, his body is lost in the earth and the soul goes to another mother's womb. The sea was the mother's womb. What was coming at sea shore? Birth of child. What was the elephant? The death, as soon as the child is born, the death hangs on his head. What was the tree? The household life. The man found the tree after walking twenty-five steps. A human being gets the household life after attaining the age of twenty-five. What were those two branches? Birth and death. A man hangs between life and death. What were the five snakes in the well? Four lives or form and one nigod. Who were the black and white rats? Day and night. As the day and night pass, the man's life finishes. He takes birth again in any form. Who were the bees? His family, mother, father, brother, sister, wife, and children. What was the honey? Worldly pleasure. Who were the Gods? Good company. Human being gets good company some times, but is engrossed in worldly pleasures and does not take advantage of good company. Engrossed in the worldly pleasures, he dies one day. This is the condition of the world.
