Science Education/Outreach Opportunity: Gain Publishing Experience with JEI

The Journal of Emerging Investigators (JEI) is a professional journal that publishes work by middle- and high-school students seeking volunteer editors and peer reviewers. Volunteering for JEI is an excellent opportunity for professional development in publishing and the peer review process as well as teaching and inspiring young aspiring scientists. We are always looking for postdocs and graduate students ain any field of science to volunteer in a variety of roles.

American Association of University Women American Fellowships

The American Fellowship program began in 1888, a time when women were discouraged from pursuing an education. It is AAUW’s largest fellowship program and the oldest non-institutional source of graduate funding for women in the United States.

AAUW American Fellowships support women scholars who are pursuing full-time study to complete dissertations, conducting postdoctoral research full time, or preparing research for publication for eight consecutive weeks. Applicants must be US citizens or permanent residents. Candidates are evaluated on the basis of scholarly excellence; quality and originality of pr oject design; and active commitment to helping women and girls through service in their communities, professions, or fields of research.

For more information and to apply: https://www.aauw.org/resources/programs/fellowships-grants/current-opportunities/

------

American Association of University Women International Fellowships

International Fellowships are awarded for full-time study or research in the United States to women who are not US citizens or permanent residents. Both graduate and postgraduate studies at accredited US institutions are supported. Recipients are selected for academic achievement and demonstrated commitment to women and girls. Recipients return to their home countries to become leaders in business, government, academia, community activism, the arts or scientific fields.

For more information and to apply: https://www.aauw.org/resources/programs/fellowships-grants/current-opportunities/

------

American Association of University Women Research Publication Grants in Engineering, Medicine and Science

Having a strong publication record is a key to receiving promotions and tenure in engineering, medi cine and science. Yet persistent gender stereotypes and bias in these fields can make it difficult for women to find the time and institutional support needed to publish their research. These grants help women overcome these barriers by funding research projects that will culminate in scholarly publications. They are open to women scholars conducting basic research in engineering, medicine or the physical or biological sciences and who have a doctorate degree in one of those fields. The grantee must publish their research in a scholarly publication and be listed as a primary author.

Science of Purpose Funding Initiative

Ancient philosophers such as Aristotle viewed living things as pursuing various ends or goals. Today, our mainstream biological sciences seldom use such concepts in their explanatory theories, though biologists often use descriptive language that imputes purposiveness to living systems and some scholars have expressed dissatisfaction with the neglect of goal-directed processes in

17

an otherwise comprehensive theoretical framework. Life itself seems to make use of a variety of strategies that achieve its purposes, and a number of natural phenomena are puzzlingly difficult to describe or account for without the use of purposive language. Is it time to resuscitate purposiveness in biology? In what ways might purpose-related concepts be useful or even necessary for scientific research into artificial intelligence, origin of life, development, macroevolution trends, ecology, and other areas? How might greater attentiveness to purposive categories such as goal-directedness, agency, and directionality, catalyze novel theory development and scientific discoveries?

The Foundation has allocated over $20 million to the Science of Purpose funding priority over the next five years. In this initiative, we seek to identify and fund the development of novel theoretical, philosophical, or scientific concepts useful for advancing the study of goal-directed, goal-seeking, or goal-suited phenomena in nature. The Foundation is interested in a range of topics and disciplinary fields from chemistry to the biological sciences. This funding competition is open to researchers worldwide who hold a doctoral-level degree or equivalent at the time of application. We are giving special emphasis to young scholars at this stage of our funding.

Overview: This award provides seed funding to address the gap between technology development and clinical application of cancer immunotherapies. These grants aim to encourage collaboration between technology developers and clinical cancer immunologists and to generate the proof-of-principle of a novel platform technology in bioinformatics, ex vivo or in silico modeling systems, immunological or tumor profiling instrumentation, methods, reagents and assays, or other relevant technologies that can enable clinician scientists to generate deeper insights into the mechanisms of action of effective or ineffective cancer immunotherapies.

CureSearch for Cancer Opportunity: Young Investigator Award LOI LOI Deadline: 11/30/2020 Funding: $75,000 per year for up to three years. Continued support for second and third year funding is contingent upon a noncompetitive review and demonstration of satisfactory and timely completion of milestones. 10% indirects are allowed. Eligibility: - Applicants must be MD (or equivalent), PhD, MD-PhD with no more than six years beyond completion of post- doctoral training - Applicants must have an academic appointment at a medical institution in the United States, European Union, United Kingdom, Canada, or Australia at the Instructor or Assistant Professor level; transition into an appropriate position anticipated during the funding period must be verified by a Letter of Institutional Support. - Applicants may not hold an independent NIH “R” or “P” award at the time of application. - Applicants may concurrently have an NIH “K” award. 20

Opportunity: Research Grants Deadline: 12/31 Funding: Varies by project; max one year Eligibility: Post-docs who are on the tenure track and have a tenured mentor are eligible. Priority is given to researchers at non-profit institutions in the United States who are new to the field of cancer research, or to established research investigators examining new approaches to cancer cure. Overview: The Foundation funds research directed toward identifying new treatments or cures for cancer. The Foundation funds projects for a one-year period which will allow establishment of capabilities of new cancer researchers, or new cancer approaches by established cancer researchers. It is anticipated that this early stage funding by the Foundation may lead to subsequent and expanded support using government agency funding. Project relevance to cancer detection, treatment, or cure should be clearly identified.

REMINDERS 11/15: Cancer Research Institute - Technology Impact Award LOI 12/1: Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation - Damon Runyon Physician-Scientist Training Award 12/16: Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation - RUNX1 Early Career Investigator Program

Overview: Pilot Awards support senior investigators who propose potentially transformative ideas that do not have extensive preliminary data but articulate a clear hypothesis and translational goals. Resources for such "high-risk, high- reward" projects are important to establish proof-of-concept, which may then leverage additional funding through more traditional avenues.
