A Census of Ireland, Circa 1659 With Supplementing Materials From the Poll Money Ordinance as transcribed from Pender’s printed and published edition of the Petty Census of 1659 by Cecilia L. Fabos-Becker, July, 2014 Part 1 of several parts to follow Surnames: Campbells, McCormicks, Wallaces, Wood’s, and Woods NOTE: In 2020, the entire surviving "census," that is, the 1659 Hearth Tax Rolls, were digitized and uploaded by Clan Maclochlainn. You will find the link under "Sources." However, if you want a quick look-up of a number of Scottish names, then these extracts, made before 2020, may be helpful to you. Seamus Pender, 1939, Dublin, Ireland, Published by the Stationery Office, “to be purchased directly from the Government Publications Sales Office, 3-4 College Street, Dublin, Ireland” Introduction (excerpts): In 1864, W.H. Harding announced before the Irish Royal Academy the discovery of what has been called “The Census of Ireland (1659).” He found the manuscripts in the Muniment Room of the Marquess of Lansdowne, at Lansdowne House in London, England. He made (handwritten) copies of the manuscripts before returning them to their owner. The copies are now in the Library of the Royal Irish Academy, as paper volumes 12" x 15" in size. .... Five entire counties are missing from the returns since their creation and spoilage: Cavan, Galway, Mayo, Tyrone and Wicklow. Additionally, four baronies are missing from County Corke, and nine baronies are missing from County Meath. Harding believed some sections were literally torn apart and used as kindling for household fires by servants, at times. -

Sources for the Grand Jury System in Ireland: an Interim Listing
Sources for the Grand Jury System in Ireland: An Interim Listing Compiled by Dr Brian Gurrin, Beyond 2022 Research Fellow, in collaboration with Local Government Archivists and Record Managers County records were stored on the top floor of the Record Treasury in the Public Records Office before 1922, and all of those records were destroyed in the explosion and fire in June of that year. By good fortune many grand jury records have survived, and herewith is presented an interim list of surviving grand jury material from all of Ireland. It is certain that far more has survived than is dealt with here, and Beyond 2022, Ireland’s Virtual Record Treasury project, would be grateful to hear from readers who know of material which is not recorded in this interim list. Many British Parliamentary Papers deal with various aspects of grand jury activities, and abstract financial accounts were published each year by the London parliament after 1823. In addition, some parliamentary papers replicate the county presentments, including Presentments passed by the Grand Juries of Ireland, spring and summer assizes, 1807, published in 1808, which gives abstracts of presentments for the spring and summer sittings in 1807 for thirty-five of the forty counties and county boroughs.1 Omitted from this important parliamentary paper are the abstracts of presentments for Carrickfergus, Galway Town, Louth, Monaghan and Sligo. Readers are strongly urged to make contact with repositories in advance of a visit to ensure that items listed in this interim listing are available for consultation. Many sources listed here are not available without prior arrangement having been obtained. -
Core Map Collection 2: Hibernia Regnum
Core Map Collection 2: Hibernia Regnum About the Collection: The Hibernia Regnum Map Collection contains 289 facsimiles of the Down Survey of the Baronies of Ireland, 1655- 1659. All of the baronies of Ireland with the exceptions of Galway, Roscommon, and Mayo were mapped– although one Baroney in Mayo, The Barony of Tirrawly, (4.3.1 below), was surveyed. These maps were lost in transit from Dublin to London, as the vessel carrying them was captured by a French privateer in 1707. The maps eventually ended up in the Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris. It was only in 1907 that the French government permitted the Ordnance Survey Office in Southampton to create facsimiles of the collection. This work was completed in 1908. The collection comprises two sets: Ulster and Munster; and Leinster and Connaught. Queen’s Special Collections holds 141 maps of the Ulster and Munster Provinces. Of these, there are 105 individual maps and 36 duplicates. The collection also houses 148 maps of the Leinster and Connaught Provinces. Of these, there are 109 individual maps and 39 duplicates. The maps were recorded using a scale of perches to an inch.1 There are two exceptions: The Barony of Gowran in the Count of Kilkenny (3.11.5 below); and The Barony of Sheelelogher the County of Kilkenny (3.11.6 below)– for which no scale is given. The maps have been measured in centimetres (height x width) using the neatline. Please use these measurements only as a guideline; the neatline is frequently skewed, and the map content often protrudes beyond it. -
