    JAN VOGLER Cello Jan Vogler’s distinguished career has seen him perform with renowned conductors and internationally acclaimed orchestras around the world, such as New York Philharmonic, Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin and London Philharmonic Orchestra. His strong artistic foundation has allowed him to explore the boundaries of his sound, creating an ongoing dialogue also with contemporary composers and performers. He regularly premieres new works, for instance compositions by celebrated composers Tigran Mansurian (with WDR Symphony Orchestra conducted by Semyon Bychkov), John Harbison (with Mira Wang and the Boston Symphony Orchestra), Udo Zimmermann (Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra), Wolfgang Rihm (Double Concerto with Mira Wang) and Jörg Widman (Cello Concerto “Dunkle Saiten”, dedicated to Jan Vogler himself). The New York Times praises his “soulful, richly hued playing” and the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung grants him the ability “to make his Cello speak like a singing voice”. Jan Vogler has been Director of the renowned Dresden Music Festival since October 2008 as well as Artistic Director of the Moritzburg Festival since 2001. In 2017 the Moritzburg Festival celebrated its 25th anniversary as one of the most established chamber music festivals internationally. Highlights of the 2018/19 season include recitals with his longtime collaborator, pianist Hélène Grimaud, concerts with the orchestra of the Mariinsky Theatre and Valery Gergiev in Berlin, Dresden and St. Petersburg, the Munich Chamber Orchestra, the Singapore Symphony and appearances in Dresden and Cologne with the WDR-Sinfonieorchester and its chief conductor Cristian Măcelaru.     Jan Vogler Cello “Vogler’s intense and febrile sound is restrained by classical discipline and enriched by a searching musical intelligence.” New Yorker Collaborator The career of award-winning cellist Jan Vogler – “one of the great cellists of his generation” (WAZ) – is marked by a balance between a strong classical foundation and a drive to push creative and sonic boundaries. After joining the Staatskapelle Dresden as principal cello at age 20, the youngest player in the history of the orchestra to hold that position, he honed his skills with the ensemble for more than a decade before leaving to take up a solo career. Vogler has since performed with renowned conductors and internationally acclaimed orchestras around the world, with music ranging from staples of the repertoire to new commissions. Driven by the collaborative process between musician and composer, he has premiered works by Grammy- nominated Armenian composer Tigran Mansurian, with the WDR Sinfonieorchester led by Semyon Bychkov, and Dresden composer Udo Zimmermann, with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and Kristjan Järvi. Along with his wife, violinist Mira Wang, he has also given the world premieres of two double concertos: in 2010 they premiered Pulitzer Prize and MacArthur Fellowship winner John Harbison’s Double Concerto with the Boston Symphony under the baton of Carlos Kalmar, and last season gave the premiere of Grawemeyer Award-winner Wolfgang Rihm’s Duo Concerto with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. This Guide could be considered as much an expression of hope as it is of planning in this unpredictable time. Festivals’ status and schedules are in continual flux, as you might imagine, so this Guide accu- rately reflects everyone’s plans for the coming season. Themes for the season include the 250th anniversary of you-know-who’s birth, celebrated at, among many others, the Tanglewood Festival, which is also planning a weekend-long tribute to what would have been Isaac Stern’s 100th birthday. Mikkelson 1 Copyrighted by Zachary Daniel Dierickx 2018 2 Abstract Clarinetist, composer, and conductor Jörg Widmann (b. 1973) is a world-class musician who is equally at home as a performer and composer. Recognized as a clarinet virtuoso, Widmann frequently performs as a solo recitalist, orchestral soloist, and as a chamber musician performing his own compositions as well as significant works from the standard repertoire. In his chamber music collaborations, he may be found performing his own compositions which mirror the instrumentation of monumental classical-romantic works. In addition to being an extraordinary clarinetist, Widmann is in high demand as a composer. His compositions have been commissioned, programmed, and recorded by renowned orchestras, soloists, and chamber ensembles around the world. Although many of his compositions feature the clarinet, his total compositional output is remarkable in size and scope. His diverse compositions include works for unaccompanied instruments (piano, violin, clarinet, and horn); chamber groups (for two to eight players, including voice); concertos (for flute, clarinet, oboe, piano, violin, cello, and trumpet); symphonic works; and operas.

    The 2020 Guide April 2020 Festivals Editor’s Note Welcome to the 2020 Guide to Summer Festivals, with information for more than 100 festivals. This Guide could be considered as much an expression of hope as it is of planning in this unpredictable time. Festivals’ status and schedules are in continual flux, as you might imagine, so this Guide accu- rately reflects everyone’s plans for the coming season. We urge you to check with the individual events to confirm; we will be updating the Guide’s web pages as we receive new information. Themes for the season include the 250th anniversary of you-know-who’s birth, celebrated at, among many others, the Tanglewood Festival, which is also planning a weekend-long tribute to what would have been Isaac Stern’s 100th birthday. Austria’s Grafenegg Festival also bows to Beethoven, featuring major artists like Pretty Yende and Jonas Kaufmann on its multiple stages, while the Montreal Chamber Music Festival’s tribute includes the complete cello sonatas with cellist Amit Peled and pianist Alon Goldstein; and Oxford’s Piano Festival in the U.K. hosts Paul Lewis playing the Moonlight and Hammerklavier sonatas along with the Diabelli Variations. The concertos and symphonies are everywhere, as performed by a vast range of ensembles, from the Lucerne Festival Orchestra in Switzerland to the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra in Latvia (at the Riga Jurmala Music Festival) to the Vienna Philharmonic at the Salzburg Festival, whose organizers like to call that esteemed orchestra their “house band.” Women are also getting some attention, with the Bard Music Festival focusing on “Nadia Boulanger and Her World” and Aspen devoted to “Uncommon Women of Note,” exploring works by Julia Wolfe, Joan Tower, Kaija Saariaho, Melody Eötvös, and others of their ilk.
