I made it through the Paper Chase (1973). *Rocky (1976) music swells in the background* RESPONDING TO HATE ii RESPONDING TO HATE iii Abstract This study examined how public universities who have hosted alt-right speakers on campus protected their reputations while also fostering a free speech environment and keeping students safe. Due to the First Amendment policies of public universities, they have a greater obligation to provide alt-right speakers a platform. However, alt-right speaking events pose risks among the university community such as violence and vandalism. These risks could potentially damage the reputation of the university. Through utilizing Situational Crisis Communication Theory (SCCT) and gathering primary documents from the universities, this study showcases the effectiveness of university strategies in regards to balancing a first amendment while maintaining student safety. The results showed university strategies that were in-line with SCCT were more effective at maintaining their reputations and keeping students safe. Hosting events dedicated to university values and engaging in the community protected their reputations leading up to and during the alt-right speaking events. The findings demonstrate an emphasis on community engagement and maintaining a competent security presence in order to keep the community safe while maintaining a free speech environment. While the group does not formally define its mission, their conservative and white-supremacist views have remained consistent since its inception. Its presence has been felt at numerous political functions and events. As a result, concerns have arisen, wherein merely giving alt-right writers a platform could potentially legitimize the alt-right.1 Arguably, when an alt-right figurehead is given a platform to speak as an expert, that platform validates that writer’s work just by the coverage of the event, as well as the prestige associated with a university.2 Additionally, a university that provides a platform for the alt-right could damage its own reputation, because allowing the alt-right to speak could align that university with their views and force the public to question the institution’s judgment and values. Subsequent protests and demonstrations from students and alt-right supporters could also be a safety risk for students and faculty. These concerns could negatively impact the reputation of that university, causing their stakeholders, such as students, parents, alumni, faculty, and staff, to lose faith in the administration’s judgment, damaging its image.3 4 5 With the advent of social media and the proliferation of online news and blogs, it is imperative that a university’s reputation is protected.6 Therefore, a public university providing a platform for the alt-right could validate their ideas, while decreasing the reputation of the public university. This study looked at the responses from public universities that have hosted alt- right figures as campus speakers. As examples, Richard Spencer and Milo Yiannopoulos are the individuals that were addressed in this study due to their popularity and the influence they have within the alt-right community as writers and speakers. Both Spencer and Yiannopoulos achieved their fame and status through their work as writers and bloggers, promoting alt-right agendas and being heralded by their peers as alt-right figureheads. This case study examined specific instances when Spenser and Yiannopoulos attempted to speak at public universities, specifically at the University of Florida (UF), University of Virginia (UVA), and the University of California, Berkley. Overall, this study examined: 1) messaging techniques of the universities, 2) target audiences and crisis histories that universities have to take into consideration when constructing messages, and 3) statements universities made

    Journal of Mason Graduate Research Volume 5 Number 2 Year 2018 © Author ISSN: 2327-0764 Pages: 108-127 Assault and Accusation Without Agents: Verb Voice in Media Narratives of Campus Sexual Assault RACHAEL GRAHAM LUSSOS & LOURDES FERNANDEZ George Mason University Previous studies of sexual assault have analyzed the connection between the narrative of events surrounding sexual assault allegations and the agency of the narrative’s characters, especially the assailant and the accuser. To contribute to this growing literature, we conducted a mixed methods word-level content analysis, testing whether the voice of verbs associated with the actions of the assailant and the accuser indicated an absence of agency. This study found that verbs associated with assailants were primarily written in passive voice and verbs associated with accusers were primarily written in active voice in both campus and non-campus sexual assault news reports. Implications for the research and practice of mass media reporting of sexual assault are discussed. Keywords: Agency, sexual assault, grammar, mixed methods INTRODUCTION News reports of sexual assault cases are frequently accused of engaging in victim blaming—assigning more responsibility for the assault to the victim than to the assailant. Victim blaming is visible at the macro level of news stories, such as in the construction of the narrative and the representation of the characters, or agents, in that narrative (Barnett, 2008, 2012; Worthington, 2005; 2008a, 2008b). Perhaps more subtly, victim blaming also appears at the micro level of a news story, in the choice of words and grammar of the sentences comprising the story. A common micro device associated with victim blaming is the use of passive voice when describing the assault.

    The Ohio State Technology Law Journal WEB OF LIES: HATE SPEECH, PSEUDONYMS, THE INTERNET, IMPERSONATOR TROLLS, AND FAKE JEWS IN THE ERA OF FAKE NEWS YITZCHAK BESSER1 This Article discusses the problem of “hate-speech impersonator trolls,” that is, those who impersonate minorities through the use of false identities online, and then use those false identities to harm those minorities through disinformation campaigns and false-flag operations. Solving this problem requires a change to the status quo, either through the passage of a new statute targeting hate-speech impersonator trolls or through the modification of Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act. The fandom is known for its diversity, as most in the fandom were either queer and/or female. Primarily, however, the fandom was infamous for a subsection of fans, antis, who performed online harassment, including blackmailing, stalking, sending death threats and child porn to other fans, and abusing the cast and crew. Their motivation was primarily shipping, the act of wanting two characters to enter a romantic relationship. Those who opposed their chosen ship were targets of harassment, despite their shared identity markers of female and/or queer. Inspired by ethnographically and autoethnography informed methods, I performed a survey of the Voltron: Legendary Defender fandom about their experiences with harassment and their feelings over the show’s universally panned conclusion. In implementing my research, I prioritized only using data given to me, a form of ethical consideration on how to best represent the trauma of others. Unfortunately, in performing this research, I became a target of harassment and altered my research trajectory. In response, I collected the various threats against me and used them to analyze online fandom harassment and the motivations of antis.

    ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: “THE FIGHT IS YOURS”: ALLY ADVOCACY, IDENTITY RECONFIGURATION, AND POLITICAL CHANGE William Howell, Doctor of Philosophy, 2020 Dissertation directed by: Dr. Trevor Parry-Giles, Department of Communication Since at least 1990, scholars and activists have used the term “ally” to describe and theorize a distinct sociopolitical role: someone from a majority identity group working to end that group’s oppression of another identity group. While the term is recent, “allies” are present throughout America’s constant struggle to actualize equality and justice. The identity-rooted ideologies that empowered allies disempowered the groups for and with whom they sought justice and equality. But those empowering identities were pieces, more or less salient, of complex intersectional people. Given the shared nature of identity, this process also necessarily pitted allies against those with whom they shared an identity. In this project, I ask two questions about past ally advocacy—questions that are often asked about contemporary ally advocacy. First, in moments of major civil rights reform, how did allies engage their own intersecting identities—especially those ideologically-charged identities with accrued power from generations of marginalizing and oppressing? Second, how did allies engage other identities that were not theirs—especially identities on whose oppression their privilege was built? In asking these two questions—about self-identity and others’ identity—I assemble numerous rhetorical fragments into “ally advocacy.” This bricolage is in recognition of rhetoric’s fragmentary nature, and in response to Michael Calvin McGee’s call to assemble texts for criticism. I intend to demonstrate that ally advocacy is such a text, manifesting (among other contexts) around the women’s suffrage amendment, the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and the marriage equality movement.

    Conservative Movement How did the conservative movement, routed in Barry Goldwater's catastrophic defeat to Lyndon Johnson in the 1964 presidential campaign, return to elect its champion Ronald Reagan just 16 years later? What at first looks like the political comeback of the century becomes, on closer examination, the product of a particular political moment that united an unstable coalition. In the liberal press, conservatives are often portrayed as a monolithic Right Wing. Close up, conservatives are as varied as their counterparts on the Left. Indeed, the circumstances of the late 1980s -- the demise of the Soviet Union, Reagan's legacy, the George H. W. Bush administration -- frayed the coalition of traditional conservatives, libertarian advocates of laissez-faire economics, and Cold War anti- communists first knitted together in the 1950s by William F. Buckley Jr. and the staff of the National Review. The Reagan coalition added to the conservative mix two rather incongruous groups: the religious right, primarily provincial white Protestant fundamentalists and evangelicals from the Sunbelt (defecting from the Democrats since the George Wallace's 1968 presidential campaign); and the neoconservatives, centered in New York and led predominantly by cosmopolitan, secular Jewish intellectuals. Goldwater's campaign in 1964 brought conservatives together for their first national electoral effort since Taft lost the Republican nomination to Eisenhower in 1952. Conservatives shared a distaste for Eisenhower's "modern Republicanism" that largely accepted the welfare state developed by Roosevelt's New Deal and Truman's Fair Deal. Undeterred by Goldwater's defeat, conservative activists regrouped and began developing institutions for the long haul.

Since it came to prominence during the 2014 Gamergate controversy,1 this loosely- defined, puzzling movement has achieved mainstream recognition and has been the subject of discussion by journalists and scholars alike. Although the movement is notoriously difficult to define, a few overarching themes can be delineated: unequivocal rejections of immigration and multiculturalism among most, if not all, alt- right subgroups; an intense criticism of feminism, in particular within the manosphere community, which itself is divided into several clans with different goals and subcultures (men’s rights activists, Men Going Their Own Way, pick-up artists, incels).2 Demographically speaking, an overwhelming majority of alt-righters are white heterosexual males, one of the major social categories who feel dispossessed and resentful, as pointed out as early as in the mid-20th century by Daniel Bell, and more recently by Michael Kimmel (Angry White Men 2013) and Dick Howard (Les Ombres de l’Amérique 2017).
