Co'!I E~lIl.!l : (PLACES WITH ASSISTIVE LISTENING SYSTEMS) An Ongoing P,roject of SHHH Australia Inc (Self Help for Hard of Hearing People) INTRODUCTION This edition of ACCESS - PALS (Places with Assistive Listening Systems) is the latest computerised listing of organisations with public access . in NSW and ACT (metropolitan and country) that have installed any kind of listening system to assist people with a hearing loss. Seven headings (or fields) have been used in the data base viz: Name of organisation Street (,Church StlMarket St' denotes 'corner of Church and Market Streets') Suburb or Town ('Sydney' denotes a city address) Postcode Descriptor 1 (indicates the prime function of the organisation. The list is sorted alphabetically by Descriptor 1 ) Descriptor 2 (gives additional information regarding location of the system or systems or further describes the organisation) System (gives type of system installed or available for use) NOTE Telephone numbers can be found in the current Sydney telephone directory or by phoning Directory Assistance. TTY phones, where available, are indicated under System in the listing. The TTY phone number can be obtained from the current Telstra Telephone Typewriter Directory or, in the case ofTAFE Colleges and Universities, by contacting Disabilities Service TAFE (9965 6667 TTY or 99656298 Voice) or Disability Services in respective Universities: Terms and abbreviations used are explained, where necessary, under (l) Explanation of Terms and (2) fu!stems . ..... and a special message to the user PLEASE • advise the organisation that you have a hearing loss when you book a theatre seat, attend a church service, etc and ask if there is an assistive listening system • ask the organisation for details of the system and where you should sit to benefit from it • advise the organisation immediately if the system is not working • let the organisation know afterwards how much you have appreciated the installation/availability of a system if it is working • advise SHHH of any corrections to this list • advise SHHH if you know of other organisations that have installed listening systems for inclusion in future editions of ACCESS - PALS © Published by SHHH Australia Inc. 1334 Pacific Hwy., Turramurra NSW 2074 Phone (02) 9144 7586 (Voice & TTY) FAX (02) 9449 2381 EXPLANATION OF TERMS Access Library A collection of devices/equipment available for loan by a local council to community groups Comm Cntr Community Centre Counter System is installed in the vicinity of a counter - bank, library, railway station Demo Demonstration - systems and devices are available for demonstration only DemofInfo Demonstration of systems and devices. Information and printed material on all aspects of hearing loss are also available Demo/Sale Systems and devices available for both demonstration and sale Education Educational institution - primary, secondary, tertiary, technical, continuing, special Govt Office Federal, State or Local Government office Hearing Res Hearing Resource and Infonmation Centre Notetakers Qualified people available to take notes if necessary -eg in educational institutions ('Ntake' or 'N' used where space is limited) Retirement Retirement village or complex S C Centre Senior Citizens Centre Technical/Other Institution with trades courses and other types of courses, both certificate and non-certificate Theatre Theatre or auditorium for live productions, conferences, etc with fixed seating Theatre/Hal] A multipurpose hall, auditorium or function centre with moveable seating (with or without a stage) that can double as a theatre for live productions Theatre/Tours Systems or devices available both in a theatre and for use on guided tours TTY Teletypewriter attached to phone to transmit/receive written messages to/from other TTY users. TV Television sets are equipped with sockets (as in hotel/motel accommodation) to take plug-in hearing devices SYSTEMS All All types of listening systems are available for demonstration and/or sale. Amp Amplified Sound. If the public address system is of a high quality with well-positioned speakers to suit those with a moderate hearing loss. the organisation has been included. Amp/HW Amplified sound with socket(s) for plug-in device(s) at designated seat(s) - see HW below. Amp/Rec Amplified sound with recording of proceedings for individual listening later - eg church services. Amp/Sign Amplified sound with signing interpreters present - eg church services. FM FM System. A radio system that uses a designated FM radio frequency to carry a signal to receivers or devices used by liSteners within a limited range. It will broadcast through walls. Often used on guided tours whereby the tour guide wears a transmitter with microphone and the hearing impaired tour member wears a receiver attached to headphones. earpiece or induction plate. HW Hardwired System. Each listener is directly connected to the sound source. A socket is positioned in a designated seat or in the wall or floor to take a plug-in device with headphones or earpiece provided either by the organisation or by the hearing impaired user. Infrared Infrared System. Sound signals are transmitted in the form of invisible infrared light rays. Listeners use cordless receivers or devices provided by the organisation or by themselves to pick up the signals converting them back into sound. Receivers must be worn in the transmitter's direct line of sight. Enquire from the organisation as to best reception area. Loop Audio Induction Loop System. A microphone or sound source is connected to an amplifier's audio input. This signal is then fed into a coil of wire which is placed round the perimeter of the seating arrangements. A listener within the loop encircled area picks up the signal inductively through a hearing aid equipped with a telecoil (denoted by a "T" position on the aid's on/ off switch); or if without hearing aids. by using a receiver or device with a built-in telecoil, volume control and earpiece. Where a loop system is indicated on this list. the whole area or a particular area may be permanently looped or a portable loop is available for use on request. Enquire from the organisation. Loop/Sign Audio induction loop system with signing interpreters present. LOOK FOR THE HEARING ACCESS SYMBOL The ear symbol means hearing help is available.
