    Thriving under Persecution: Meserete Kristos Church Leadership during the Ethiopian Revolution (1974-1991) BRENT L. KIPFER* Abstract: Under persecution during the Ethiopian Revolution (1974-1991), highly committed men and women led the Meserete Kristos Church (MKC) through remarkable transformation and growth. Although persecution has been an enduring reality in the global church, leadership in that context has received scant research attention. Drawing on interviews and other first-person accounts of faithful MKC leaders in the Derg era, this essay explores the dynamics of their experience using the leadership theory of Robert E. Quinn as a conceptual lens. Persecution forced MKC leaders to clarify the priority of their commitment to Jesus and the mission of the church. Prepared to die for the sake of the gospel, they demonstrated leadership marked by a highly effective pursuit of purpose, compelling integrity under pressure, attractive love, and remarkable creativity—leading to extraordinary results. Between 1974 and 1991 the Meserete Kristos Church (MKC)—an Anabaptist Christian renewal movement in Ethiopia—experienced a profound transformation. Under pressure from a Marxist regime bent on eradicating evangelical Christianity from the country, the MKC grew from 800 to 34,000 baptized members, greatly expanded its geographic reach, dramatically increased the pool of people in active ministry, became financially self-supporting, adopted a radically new ministry structure, and nurtured a contagious spiritual vitality among its members. A remarkable group of leaders—both men and women—played an essential role in this transformation, leading the MKC with courageous purpose, integrity, love, and creativity. This essay, based largely on extensive interviews with twenty-four MKC leaders, explores the dynamics of leadership that enabled the MKC not only to survive but also to flourish under circumstances of persecution and extreme hardship.

Synthesizing the writings of early church leaders and church historians reveals a clear progression. The early musical practices of the church were connected to the Jewish synagogues. As recorded in the Old Testament, Jewish worship included instruments as assigned by one’s priestly tribe.

Ed Christian Kutztown University of Pennsylvania What music is appropriate for Christians? What music is appropriate in worship? Is there a difference between music appropriate in church and music appropriate in a youth rally or concert? Is there a difference between lyrics ap- propriate for congregational singing and lyrics appropriate for a person to sing or listen to in private? Are some types of music inherently inappropriate for evangelism?1 These are important questions. Congregations have fought over them and even split over them.2 The answers given have often alienated young people from the church and even driven them to reject God. Some answers have rejuve- nated congregations; others have robbed congregations of vitality and shackled the work of the Holy Spirit. In some churches the great old hymns havenÕt been heard in years. Other churches came late to the Òpraise musicÓ wars, and music is still a controversial topic. Here, where praise music is found in the church service, it is probably accompanied by a single guitar or piano and sung without a trace of the enthusi- asm, joy, emotion, and repetition one hears when it is used in charismatic churches. Many churches prefer to use no praise choruses during the church service, some use nothing but praise choruses, and perhaps the majority use a mixture.     CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE CHRISTIAN MEDIA Christian press and media can be understood in diff erent ways. ereTh are internal publications in the churches, directed to the community of the faithful. Th ere are publications with mainly a Christian content, directed to a broader public than only the church community. Finally there are media-companies run by Christians, who want to off er a contribution to the general public. At the beginning of this chapter we will give a short overview of the Protestant and Catholic press in Indonesia starting in the seventeenth century. In a second part we will describe in short the history of Catholic publishers. We will take the history of the Catholic publisher and printer Kanisius as an example, and give in comparison a short description of the biggest Protestant Publisher in Indonesia, BPK Gunung Mulia. In the third part we will give some attention to an ecumenical project named Kokosia, a project that tried to make an inventory of the Christian activities in the fi eld of communication in Indonesia between 1978 and 1986. In the last part of this chapter we will describe how the newspaper Kompas, started by Catholics in 1965 as a “daily newspaper” and as a “views paper,” continues to the present to give a peaceful but also a critical contribution to the developments in Indonesian society. We end with a few notes about Sinar Harapan, later renamed Suara Pembaruan, a newspaper started by Protestants in Indonesia.     ANDREAS HAGER Christian Rock Concerts as a Meeting between Religion and Popular Culture Introduction Different forms of artistic expression play a vital role in religious practices of the most diverse traditions. One very important such expression is music. This paper deals with a contemporary form of religious music, Christian rock. Rock or popular music has been used within Christianity as a means for evangelization and worship since the end of the 1960s.1 The genre of "contemporary Christian music", or Christian rock, stands by definition with one foot in established institutional (in practicality often evangelical) Christianity, and the other in the commercial rock music industry. The subject of this paper is to study how this intermediate position is manifested and negotiated in Christian rock concerts. Such a performance of Christian rock music is here assumed to be both a rock concert and a religious service. The paper will examine how this duality is expressed in practices at Christian rock concerts. The research context of the study is, on the one hand, the sociology of religion, and on the other, the small but growing field of the study of religion and popular culture. The sociology of religion discusses the role and posi- tion of religion in contemporary society and culture. The duality of Chris- tian rock and Christian rock concerts, being part of both a traditional religion and a modern medium and business, is understood here as a concrete exam- ple of the relation of religion to modern society. The study of the relations between religion and popular culture seems to have been a latent field within research on religion at least since the 1970s, when the possibility of the research topic was suggested in a pioneer volume by John Nelson (1976).

    Book of Acts Study, Part 53 – Wednesday, February 10, 2021 (COVID 19 Livestream #47) The Book of Acts fills in between the Gospel of John and the Book of Romans. Not only in the order in which the Books of the Bible are listed, but chronologically. So the Book of Acts is very important, it fills in important history of the propagation of the early church. It documents the spread of the Gospel into the Gentile world. Last week, we looked at the setting of the Book of Acts. We looked at the author Luke, and learned a little about him. But we also established the themes for the Book of Acts that we will be rallying around for our church, at such a time as this. Two main themes of the Book of Acts we will be emphasizing: 1. Humanly speaking, the early Christians had nothing going for them. The church was new, with unproven leaders. They weren’t educated, they had no money, no modern means for spreading the gospel. They faced incredible opposition and enormous obstacles. Yet they were empowered by the Holy Spirit to do the impossible and bring a simple salvation message to an unsaved world. If this isn’t encouraging for us here at Crossover, I don’t know what is. God doesn’t call the qualified, He qualifies the called. What is going to happen here at Crossover will be a clear work of the Holy Spirit and it will be done through common broken people, amen?! 2. Persecution was meant to squash Christianity.

    Sparrow Discography by Mike Callahan, David Edwards & Patrice Eyries © 2018 by Mike Callahan Sparrow Records Discography Sparrow is a Contemporary Christian label founded in 1976 by Billy Ray Hearn. Hearn was the A&R Director for Word Records’ Myrrh label, founded a few years earlier also as a Contemporary Christian label. Sparrow also released records under their Birdwing subsidiary. Hearn’s Sparrow label was in competition with Hearn’s old boss, Word Records, and was quite successful. Even today, Sparrow is among the top Christian labels. Hearn sold the label to EMI in 1992, and it was placed under the Capitol Christian Music Group. Sparrow signed a distribution agreement with MCA in April, 1981 to release their product in the secular market while the regular Sparrow issues were distributed to Christian stores and Christian radio stations. The arrangement with MCA lasted until October, 1986, when Sparrow switched distribution to Capitol. This is the first time the Queen's consort has been dispatched to meet a visiting head of state. Prince Philip was part of a small welcoming party for Benedict XVI when the pontiff steped off his Alitalia plane, code-named Shepherd One, this morning at the start of his four-day visit to the UK. Also present to receive the Pope were Cardinal Keith O'Brien, the leader of Scotland's Catholics, and his opposite number in England, Vincent Nichols, Archbishop of Westminster. The Duke and the Pope travelled together by limousine to the Palace of Holyroodhouse to the Queen, the first minister Alex Salmond and various other dignitaries. A source in the Roman Catholic Church in Scotland said that the move was seen as an acknowledgement that the Pope's forthcoming trip to Britain was "not just any state visit". Fr Lombardi, the Vatican spokesman said: ''Usually it is a junior member of the royal family or a minister but to have the Duke of Edinburgh at the welcome is very significant and most unusual,” Many protests are being organised around the UK by various groups, however, the Vatican has already stated that it is not worried by this. "There are always demonstrations, even during other trips. In this particular case, the movement will be bigger because in the United Kingdom there are more atheist or anti-pope groups.
