Journeys Into the Winter Wilderness: an Exploration JOURNEYS INTO THE WINTER WILDERNESS: AN EXPLORATION OF THE TRADITIONAL WINTER CAMPING EXPERIENCE by Kyle Clarke A thesis submitted to the School of Kinesiology and Health Studies in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Queen’s University Kingston, Ontario, Canada (August 2015) Copyright © Kyle Clarke, 2015 ABSTRACT This thesis reports on a phenomenological study designed to examine the traditional winter camping experience from the perspective of the participant. The specific research questions that guided this study were: (a) What are the personal meanings that traditional winter campers attach to their experiences? (b) What factors led to their decision to take up the activity of traditional winter camping? (c) How has participation in traditional winter camping affected changes in their own attitudes towards nature, wilderness travel, personal identity and feelings of self-reliance? and (d) What are the unique learning outcomes that could be achieved by including traditional winter camping activities as part of outdoor education experiences? The participants in this study were eight people who regularly participate in traditional winter camping activities. I conducted semi-structured interviews with them in order to discover the attachments, significant aspects and personal meanings that they see in relation to their traditional winter camping experiences. Analysis of the data revealed three core themes that were central to the experiences of traditional winter campers. These are: connection to the land, sense of community, and personal empowerment. The findings suggest that participation in traditional winter camping activities may have an impact on physical, mental and social well- being, and may help to foster pro-environmental attitudes. The thesis research also illuminated unique aspects of this activity and participants’ experiences. Suggestions for continued research are described, which may provide further insight into this phenomenon. ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Many people contributed to this research study and I would like to take this opportunity to recognize and thank them for their support and contributions. Study maps and research the area. How long will it take to get there and set up camp? If something goes wrong, what emergency services (i.e., medical, search & rescue) are closest? Talk to people who have been there and can give you pointers. Check the weather forecast. Are conditions favorable? The NOAA-NWS Web site offers detailed backcountry forecasts. Check the local road and trail conditions. Recognize and avoid avalanche areas. Check the local avalanche forecast and don't go if avalanche danger is high. Keep in mind that avalanche forecasts may be general and not accurate for specific areas. If you are on or near any slope greater than 20°, your group should have formal avalanche training. Leave a trip plan. Let others know where you'll be, when you'll be there, when you'll return, vehicle information and names and contact number for participants in your group.

    Reinterpreting sustainable design of traditional Iranian cities A thesis submitted for the degree of Master of Philosophy Nima Dibazar Welsh School of Architecture Cardiff University September 2016 Abstract: In our constant attempts to reduce the negative impact of urbanisation on natural environment and to improve quality of urban life, we must be inventive with new technologies but also to re-learn and re-use effective local solutions which have been used for centuries in vernacular cities before the industrialisation and widespread use of fossil fuels. The study focuses on vernacular Iranian cities in order to highlight architectural and urban solutions adopted in response to harsh climate of Iranian plateau. Throughout the study climatic adaptations in vernacular Iranian cities have been investigated in response to four elements of sun, wind, water and green spaces. The main research approach adopted in this research involved urban structure analysis through aerial photos, historic maps, existing literature in Farsi and English as well as on site observation by the author. Native builders informed by accumulated knowledge of their ancestors, constructed dense urban environments with available local materials. These compact cities were efficient but also diverse in land use. Dense urban fabric protected building from cold winter winds and harsh summer sunlight. Water was transported from foothill of mountains via network of underground channels to supply water to buildings and also to moderate temperature by surface evaporation. Local knowledge of regional winds enabled native people to build houses and streets with appropriate orientation and benefit from favourable winds for ventilation and to avoid harsh unpleasant winds.

Annotations are grouped under 13 headings: Biography; Books for Young Children; Celebrations; Classics; Contemporary Realistic Fiction; Fantasy; Fine Arts; Historical Fiction; Language and Reading; Poetry; Sciences and Mathematics, Social Studies; and Traditional Literature. In addition to the author and title, each annotation lists illustrators where applicable and the recommended age range of potential readers. A selected list of literary awards given to children's books published between 1988 and 1992; a description of popular booklists; author, illustrator, subject, and title indexes; and a directory of publishers are attached.
