I would, also, like to thank my students who have been part in this research investigation for their commitment, patience and honesty. ii iii Abstract The evolution of technology in the last few decades has been rapid in introducing new digital tools along with a new language that has become popular among the current generation. The simple access to computer-mediated communications encourages learners to interact with each other more frequently. However, when they are interacting via these tools, they usually manipulate the writing aspect in an informal manner, with various contractions, colloquial abbreviations, trendy acronyms, emoticons and loose sentence structures. These new outlets have negatively affected their academic lives changing them from active researchers into passive recipients. Henceforth, one of the major areas affected by the different forms of computer-mediated communications is academic writing. Consequently, and teachers from all over the globe are complaining about the decline in the quality of their students’ writings, ringing the alarm about the new language created by the Internet, technology and its inventions. Due to these aspects, the aim of this study is to investigate the effects of computer-mediated communications on students’ academic writing, showcase the extent it is affected and to seek a way out to enhance students’ writing abilities. The investigation was conducted on two groups from the English department and one group from the French department at the faculty of foreign languages. The researcher adopted a mixed method approach to verify his hypotheses and to confirm that computer-mediated communications can affect students’ writing abilities. Results obtained suggest the need for more awareness of computer-mediated communications negative impact and a rational manipulation of technological devices. These include providing news and information not available on traditional platforms, assisting in the coordination of protests, helping users to join political causes, creating opportunities for protestors to interact with one another, spreading enthusiasm and facilitating emotional contagion (Bennett & Segerberg, 2011, 2014; Chadwick & Howard, 2010; de- Zúñiga, Jung, & Valenzuela, 2012; Gerbaudo, 2012, 2016; Halupka, 2014, 2016; Reedy & Wells, 2010). However many of these previous works (a) do not focus upon mobile social networking applications, and (b) are located within either legacy democracies or authoritarian regimes. In order to bridge this research gap, this study focuses upon the use of mobile social networking applications to support digital activism within the nascent democracy of Nigeria, a country that has only recently returned from military dictatorship. Specifically, this study investigates the impact of mobile internet on the rise of digital activism among Nigerian university students from two universities in Nigeria during the 2012 Occupy Nigeria protest against the removal of petroleum subsidies by the Federal Government of Nigeria. The movement lasted for one month and took place in all the major cities in Nigeria. A mixed-methods approach was adopted featuring two principal methods: (a) a cross- sectional quantitative survey of media platforms used by protestors (n=440); and (b) semi- structured qualitative interviews on protestors’ experiences before, during and after Occupy Nigeria (n=19).

    African Studies Quarterly | Volume 10, Issue 1 | Spring 2008 Comparative Perspectives on the Rehabilitation of Ex-Slaves and Former Child Soldiers with Special Reference to Sudan RANDALL FEGLEY Abstract: Despite the January 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement, reconstruction of southern Sudan remains a daunting task, which limited resources and unlimited suspicions may derail or delay. Among myriad issues facing agencies and their client communities are the problems of assisting children traumatized by the brutal legacies of Sudan’s first half century of independence. Given the length of Sudan’s conflicts, few have experienced a “normal” childhood. Furthermore, the psychological and social aspects of rehabilitation have only been examined recently. This article tabulates the successes and failures of governmental and non-governmental programs rehabilitating former slaves, many of whom were or are children, and child soldiers, many of whom are now adults. It compares activities in Sudan to programs in other parts of Africa (Angola, Ethiopia, Ghana, Liberia, Mozambique, Sierra Leone and Uganda) and beyond (Afghanistan, India, Sri Lanka and the United Arab Emirates). Applying these comparisons in the absence of long-term assessments, the author endeavors to determine pitfalls to be avoided and best practices to be followed. Historical Context Most ancient forms of forced servitude sought to absorb conquered peoples and avoid their reintegration into previous cultures. But the rise of profit-driven mass slavery in Imperial Rome, Ottoman Turkey, and later the Americas, raised new issues, as slaveholders had little desire to integrate chattels into their societies. The Trans-Atlantic slave trade created an easily distinguishable class to clarify socio-economic divisions.
