Kings are honoured or dishonoured in relation to the extent to which they were faithful to the ways of God as influencers of the people, and with reference to those who advised and influenced them. Notes The first part of 2 Chronicles elaborates on Solomon's building of the temple, which also appears in the last part of 1 Chronicles. For this reason, this session doesn't focus a great deal on the temple building. However, if you particularly want to emphasise this in 2 Chronicles, see the activities from 1 Chronicles to supplement this session.     2 Chronicles Chapter 5 2 Chronicles 5:1 Thus all the work that Solomon made for the house of the LORD was finished: and Solomon brought in [all] the things that David his father had dedicated; and the silver, and the gold, and all the instruments, put he among the treasures of the house of God. The temple took 7 years to build and was completed in Solomon’s 11th year (959 B.C.), in the eighth month (compare 1 Kings 6:38). Since it was dedicated in the seventh month (5:3), its dedication occurred 11 months later to coincide with the Feast of Booths, or Tabernacles (see note on 1 Kings 8:2). Why is there so much emphasis in the Old Testament on the temple? (1) It was the center of worship that called people to correct belief through the generations; (2) It was the symbol of God’s presence with His people; (3) It was the symbol of forgiveness and grace, reminding the people of the seriousness of sin and the availability of mercy; (4) It prepared the people for the true Lamb of God, Jesus Christ, who would take away sin; (5) It was a place of prayer (compare 7:12-17). Much of the “silver” and “gold” used in the temple came from the spoils of the many battles King David had fought as well as from his personal resources. Following the example of their king, the people of Israel also gave freely to support the temple (1 Chron. 29:1-9). The temple which began in the fourth year of the reign of Solomon, took 7 years to construct.

    THROUGH THE BIBLE STUDY 2 CHRONICLES 18-22 The children’s series VeggieTales has sold over 52 million DVD and VHS copies. Bob the Tomato and Larry the Cucumber teach biblical values to kids. The series became so popular it was sold to NBC and added to its Saturday morning kids programming. But it didn’t take long for NBC editors to go to work. Non-historical references to God and the Bible were sliced - even Bob and Larry’s trademark ending - “Remember kids, God made you special, and loves you very much…” - is gone. The vitamins were cooked out of VeggieTales. The series’ creator, Phil Vischer confessed, had he known how much the shows would change he wouldn’t have signed on to the network deal. Vischer sums it up this way, “VeggieTales is religious – NBC is not.” It’s a classic case of what the Bible calls being “unequally yoked.” 2 Corinthians 6:14 says it best, “Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers.” This is a farming analogy… Different species of animals, with diverse natures, harnessed together will struggle to cooperate. They’ll pull in opposite directions. And when a Christian becomes entangled with a non- Christian in a legally binding relationship some kind of compromise is the inevitable outcome. !1 It happens when a believer and an unbeliever go into business. It happens when a believer and an unbeliever get married. It happens when NBC and VeggieTales partner together.     2 Kings and Chronicles INFORMATION FOR SMALL GROUP LEADERS For information on 2 Kings see Small Group Discussion Guide for weeks 16 and 17. 1-2 Chronicles: The Hebrew title of the work, Dibre Hayyamim, is derived from 1 Chronicles 27:24 and may be translated “the events of the years” or “annals.” In the Septuagint (Greek translation), it is known as Paraleipomena or “the things omitted,” indicating that it was considered a supplement to the books of Samuel and Kings. The English title derives from a suggestion by Jerome, the translator of the Vulgate (a Latin translation), that a more suitable title would be “the chronicle of the whole sacred history.” Martin Luther adopted this proposal, titling his translation of the books Die Chronika, and versions ever since the Reformation have followed his practice. Theme The central theme of Chronicles is the significance of the Davidic covenant as the enduring basis of Israel’s life and hope. The Davidic covenant is expressed in the two institutions that derive directly from it: the monarchy and the temple. These institutions are mutually related (1 Chron. 17:10b–14), and together they represent God’s kingdom in Israel (2 Chron. 13:5, 8). The Davidic covenant does not replace the Mosaic covenant but builds on it for the new age of the monarchy and the temple. Further dimensions of the Davidic covenant are discussed below under Key Themes.
