Report of Activities

This report will summarize the activities of the SEG SGA Student Chapters UNLP since October 2019 to September 2020 and also the projects planned for the future.

1. News from the Student Chapter

Unification of the SEG and SGA Student Chapters

At the beginning of the school year we decided to unify the work group with the Student Chapter of the SGA, in order to unify efforts, resources and thus facilitate the implementation of all activities.

Logo change

As a result of the changes within the group's organization, we began to think about changing our group's logo (Image 1).

The new design was thought among all the members, considering the addition of the following main points:

- Name update of the Student Chapter, indicating the unification of the chapters

- Territory and Argentine flag

- Oak leaves, representing the National University of La Plata

- Geological hammer

2. Current situation of Covid-19 in Argentina

On March 3rd of this year the first case of Covid-19 was registered in our country. From that moment on, the national government declared the Public Health Emergency established by Law No. 27.541, for a period of 1 year in virtue of the declared pandemic. On March 16, activities such as classes at all levels were suspended and on the 20th of the same month, a presidential decree (Decree 297/2020) resolved the beginning of Preventive and Mandatory Social Isolation.

So far, 13 extensions and modifications of the original decree have been made: classes at all levels and attendance at associated research institutes continue to be suspended with no certain forecast of return.

The National University of La Plata, following the guidelines of the National Government, was dictating the following measures:

- On March 16th, 2020, the National University of La Plata through Resolution 699-20 announced: ‘Facing the Coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) in our country, and attentive to the recommendations issued by the Ministry of Health of the Nation and the Ministry of Education, the National University of La Plata decided to suspend the teaching of face-to-face classes until March 31st, a period that may be extended.’

With current infection cases above 10.000 per day, Argentina is the tenth country in the world with the highest number of Covid-19 positives since the beginning of the pandemic. It was in this context that Alberto Fernandez, the President of the Nation, decided to extend the quarantine until October 11st at national level.

In the national total, there are currently more than 650.000 infections and the number of deaths is around 14.000 people.

3. Virtual Ibero-American Meeting of Student Chapters

When the mandatory quarantine in our country was confirmed towards the beginning of our school year, we started thinking about different activities that could be done virtually.

In this way, the possibility of a virtual meeting with other Student Chapters in Latin America arose. In this way we could exchange experiences, ideas and advice, since we were all going through the same situation. It was decided to add to this meeting our colleagues from , with whom we have had excellent communications in the past, in addition to our language and history.

On May 29th, the meeting was held in what we called the "1st Virtual Ibero-American Meeting of Student Chapters of SEG" (Image 3 and 4), in which the Chapters of the following universities participated:

-Universidad Nacional de La Plata, Argentina. (as organizers)

-Universidad de Concepción, Chile.

-Universidad Nacional de Ingeniería, Perú.

-Universidad Nacional del Sur, Argentina.

-Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, Brasil.

-Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Brasil.

-Universidad Central del Ecuador, Ecuador.

-Universitat de Barcelona, España.

-Universidad Austral de Chile, Chile.

-Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, Brasil.

-Universidad Nacional del Altiplano, Perú.

-Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil.

-Universidad Autónoma de Guerrero, México.

-Universidade Federal do Paraná, Brasil.

-Universidade de São Paulo, Brasil.

-Universidade Federal de Ouro Preto, Brasil.

-Universidade Estadual Paulista, Brasil.

-Universidad Nacional de Colombia - Sede Bogotá, Colombia.

-Universidad Nacional de Colombia - Sede Medellín, Colombia.

-Escuela Politécnica Nacional, Ecuador.

9

-Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos, Perú.

-Universidade Federal do Ceará, Brasil.

The meeting lasted approximately 5 hours, where each Chapter had a stipulated time to present its group, activities, history, etc. The focus was also on the particular situation of Covid-19 and what measures were being taken to replace face-to-face activities.

Other topics were discussed, such as:

- Self-financing: what activities each group organizes to raise funds.

- Academic-industry interaction: from our place as students how to strengthen the link between both parties.

- Getting sponsorship from mining companies and logistical help.

- Gender inequality in the industry.

- Organization of courses and training.

- Field trips, possibility of organizing joint field trips between several countries. Exchange of contacts and advice on different areas visited by each group.

- Dissemination of activities and the Student Chapter: how each group promotes their activities and the response they receive in each academic institution from professors and students.

- Particular experiences in the application and use of the SEG's Student Funding and Mentoring Program.

As a result of the virtual meeting, an updatable database and WhatsApp and Facebook groups were created where we remain permanently connected.

We consider this to be one of the main benefits we gained from this whole experience. In these complicated social and economic times for the world, and particularly Latin America, being in touch with other groups is useful, as we provide information and contacts. We also provide each other with logistical help and have plans to join forces in order to organize trips and other activities.

In addition to the participation of the different national directors in our series of talks, we have managed to form a working link with the Secretariat. We hope that in the coming years we can count on their permanent participation and on the chapter's agenda, as well as on their support in the logistics of field trips and interaction with different organizations and companies.

5. Promotion of activities in social networks

One of the activities we are focusing on this year is a broader and better use of our social networks (Image 13).

Since we cannot attend the university in person, we have started a campaign to publicize our activities and the group to attract new students who want to join (Image 14). We made specific publications in our networks and gave a short presentation before each lecture to tell what we do.

22

Image 13: Dissemination of activities through social networks. Example of Instagram.

23

Image 14: Presentation of our Chapter, also published in social networks.

6. Canceled field trips

In our last Summary of Activities we had reported that we were postponing the planned trip to visit the geological province of the Deseado Massif, Argentine Patagonia, due to the fragile economic situation our country was going through with the imminent change of government.

This situation did not improve in the first months of 2020. Therefore it was thought to postpone the trip again for the end of this year and instead organize a short trip in the month of March and thus visit Mina Veladero, the largest operating mine in the country, located in San Juan province. The trip was planned and confirmed for the week of March 23-27. It consisted of a one-day visit to all the facilities of the mine and, in addition, a workshop on epithermal deposits with Geology students of the National University of San Juan to promote the link with them.

Taking into account what was mentioned above regarding the measures chosen by the national government in March, we were forced to suspend this trip as well.

24

7. Student Chapter Funds

During all this time the funds granted by the SEG were not used and remain in the bank account of the Chapter Treasurer together with the funds obtained through own financing, waiting for the possibility of making the planned trips.

At the end of 2019 we held a raffle of different products and obtained some funds.

During this 2020 we have not been able to carry out any fundraising activities.

8. Next activities - Plans for the future

Our objectives for the next cycle are:

- Carry out the postponed trips to the Deseado Massif and Mina Veladero. For this new opportunity we may count on the logistical assistance of the National Secretariat of Mining to obtain permits, transportation facilities, etc. We are evaluating the possibility of carrying out a field course during the trip to Patagonia where we can train with specialized technicians about the different methods of rock drilling, and with exploration geologists about drilling logging.

- Continue to maintain a good activity in social networks with the aim of encouraging and promoting our activities and the Student Chapter.

- To continue with the cycles of thematic lectures

- Organize short courses on Leapfrog and Iogas programs. Our older members of the Chapter, who are finishing their doctoral theses, have a lot of experience in the use of these programs and we hope to organize a course together with other teachers of the university to train younger students.

Something to emphasize is that we do not have exact date of return to classes in our university and institutes, for which, all our plans are subject to the resolutions and decrees of the national government and the National University of La Plata.
