  • “Covering” the Bluesman from a Distance
Introduction In many ways, my journey towards this thesis topic began with my brother’s music collection. Throughout my teens he would introduce me to a wide range of local and international acts, many of which were influenced by African-American blues artists. This influence is evident in both their construction of sound and the old songs that they rerecorded. From there I began tracing musical influences from song credits and interview excerpts—a path often travelled by musicians and fans alike—that would eventually lead me to an appreciation of blues music. The penultimate step towards this topic came in the form of my honours thesis—a creative project that involved rerecording several tracks from the catalogue of an early Australian country music artist, one of which was titled “Blue Mountain Blues”.1 From there I turned to blues music in Australia. Initially conceived as a history of “Australian blues”, it became apparent that this proposed sub-genre struggled to unify and explain the disparate musical styles contained therein. Although each artist was clearly addressing the musical characteristics and influences I had come to recognise as “blues music”, it all sounded different. In the meantime, I developed a keen interest in a fellow colleague’s thesis topic that addressed the role of “covers” within the Australian music industry (Giuffre, 2005). My epiphany—and catalyst for the current thesis topic—eventually presented itself while viewing a live performance from Peter Green Splinter Group. The concert was split into two courses: an acoustic entrée featuring several Robert Johnson “covers”; and, an electric main with side dishes of early Fleetwood Mac material—the band Green had help found many years ago.

  • Early Beatles History: 1940-1964 Birth of the Beatles
MOVIES ABOUT THE BEATLES Early Beatles History: 1940-1964 Birth of The Beatles In 1978, Elvis – The Movie premiered on American television. The pro- duction was a dramatization of Elvis Presley’s life, featuring Kurt Rus- sell as Elvis. His unexpected death the year before had revived the public interest in ‘The King,’ and countless biographies invaded the market. The movie spawned several fictional and/or biographical films about po- pular culture icons, such as Buddy Holly (The Buddy Holly Story, 1978) and The Beatles (Birth of The Beatles, 1979). In the 1980s and 1990s, only a handful of pop biographies were successful at the box office, i. e. Luis Valdez’ La Bamba (1987) about Richie Valens, Oliver Stone’s The Doors (1991) and Iain Softley’s Backbeat (1993). More recently, Holly- wood has produced a string of highly successful TV and cinema biogra- phies of musical heroes. The most notable films and series are The Rat Pack (1998) about the lives and times of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Sammy Davis Jr., Ray (2004) about Ray Charles, Stoned (2005) about The Rolling Stones’ Brian Jones, and – again – Elvis (2005). Starting with Birth of The Beatles, The Beatles’ history has been dramatized in various forms for television as well as for the cinema. While The Beat- les’ early group history has been dealt with in Birth of The Beatles (1979), Backbeat (1993), and In His Life: The John Lennon Story (2000), John Lennon’s private life was explored in John and Yoko: A Love Story (1985) and The Hours and Times (1991).

ORHORST GLORY A. FRIEDRICHS 21ST CENTURY ROCKERS PRESTEL MUNICH BERLIN LONDON NEW YORK RZ_BU_Rockers_Inhalt_rl.indd 1 18.06.10 08:20 Sounds and Attitude Q&A with Rock’n’Roll DJs Cosmic Keith and Sean Peschiera Question: Some people say that the Rocker life is all about bikes, birds and Brylcreem, where does music fit in? Cosmic Keith: Rock’n’Roll music is all about attitude. The Rockers had a tough image and the music which went with it was as mean as their look. It was a breakaway from post-war Great Britain, back in the day. Nothing has changed fifty years on, Rockers are stuck firmly to the look and sound of their roots and it’s a totally British thing, like the Mods of the sixties. Sean Peschiera: Music forms the backdrop, the atmosphere to it all, the soundtrack, take any youth cult, it has its sound, and it matters. The period between 1958 and 1965 saw England place itself firmly on the Rock’n’Roll map of the world, eventually to eclipse the American music scene with the arrival of The Beatles and others. Q: Everyone knows proto-rocker rebels Gene Vincent, Elvis Presley and Carl Perkins. How does the British Rocker sound differ from American Rock’n’Roll? CK: Many British artists were heavily influenced by the sound of Elvis Presley, Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran, Buddy Holly and so on. Guys like Vince Taylor and Johnny Kidd got very close to the distinctive ‘Yank’ sound with their raw, up-tempo songs. Taylor’s Brand New Cadillac is a fine example, which was later covered by the well-known punk band The Clash.

  • The Big Beat Business
CHAPTER 7 THE BIG BEAT BUSINESS As an offshoot of show business, the Big Beat is very much a profitable concern to a few people behind the scene. The main brain is undoubtedly Larry Parnes. Under his aegis, a remarkable crowd of boys with stage names based on their peculiar talents – Power, Keene and Gentle are examples – have been hurtled on to the scene. Larry Parnes’s ‘stable’, as it is known, consists of a group of rocksters all under contract to Parnes. Whereas other singers have managers and agents who take a percentage of their earnings, Parnes employs his singers instead of them employing him. Discovering them in various towns around the country (a surprising number come from Liverpool), he then grooms what talent they have and puts them under contract to him. This contract (usually a five-year one) provides the boys with a regular weekly wage whether they are working or not. At first, the wage is low (sometimes as low as £20 a week) but the contract promises a regular pay increase until the fifth year, when his stable boys are assured of astronomical earnings. As yet, none of the boys have been working for Parnes for five years, and so they are not yet earning as much as, say, one of the self-employed singers who may collect £500 per week after only three months in the business. However, the Parnes beatsters consider the way they are working infinitely better than being entirely dependent on a fickle public for their personal fortune and fame. Working with a five-year contract, the boys do have some s ecurity with Larry Parnes behind them.
