Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

Des similitudes peuvent être constatées, en premier lieu de par l’appartenance des deux formations à cette nouvelle scène de Seattle. Bruce PAVITT, fondateur du label Sub Pop, figure en effet parmi les amis du groupe, ce qui lui permet, avant NIRVANA, de devenir la première formation signée par l’incontournable officine Underground. Ensuite, la musique de SOUNDGARDEN est fréquemment caractérisée par la noirceur et la mélancolie. Cependant, Badmotorfinger, deuxième effort du groupe publié en 1991 par la compagnie nationale A & M, avec laquelle il vient de conclure un contrat avantageux, révèle des influences qui le rattachent davantage au Metal. L’album comporte de nombreuses compositions reposant sur des riffs plombés. Ainsi Jesus Christ Pose rappelle fortement LED ZEPPELIN, et le groupe paie sa dette à BLACK SABBATH sur le titre Slaves & Bulldozers. Après ce disque acclamé par la critique, SOUNDGARDEN connaîtra son apogée avec la sortie en 1994 de Superunknown, qui devient numéro un aux États-Unis avec trois millions d’exemplaires vendus.

In Myers v. Moore , the district court granted the defendants’ motion to vacate a default judgment of more than $1 million where the plaintiff failed to demonstrate that the defendants had actual knowledge of the lawsuit and where the plaintiff failed to establish that she properly served the complaint on defendants or their authorized agents. Observers question how a plaintiff would satisfy these evidentiary hurdles. Plaintiff Awarded $1 Million Default Judgment The lawsuit arises out of a stage-diving incident at a music venue in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. During a performance, the lead singer of the band Fishbone, Angelo C. Moore, dove into the crowd and knocked over the plaintiff, causing her serious injuries. The plaintiff sued Moore, John Noorwood Fisher (Fishbone’s bass player), Fishbone, Fishbone’s manager, and other parties associated with the venue for negligence and civil conspiracy in producing the concert and failing to warn the audience that the concert would feature stage diving. The plaintiff also sued Moore, Fisher, and Fishbone for assault and battery. After the plaintiff reached settlements with some of the defendants, the court dismissed the plaintiff’s claims against the non-settling defendants, including Moore and Fisher. The plaintiff brought another action on February 3, 2012, against the non-settling defendants for negligence, civil conspiracy, and assault and battery.

    In the early months of 1964, on their inaugural tour of North America, the Beatles seemed to be everywhere: appearing on The Ed Sullivan Show, making the front cover of Newsweek, and playing for fanatical crowds at sold out concerts in Washington, D.C. and New York City. On Billboard magazine’s April 4, 1964, Hot 100 2 list, the “Fab Four” held the top five positions. 28 One notch down at Number 6 was “Suspicion,” 29 by a virtually unknown singer from Amarillo, Texas, named Terry Stafford. I was raised in Pasadena, MD where I attended public school. I am a self taught musician specializing in string instruments, mainly guitar, banjo, violin/fiddle, and mandolin. With the influence of my parents, I came obsessed with music of all kinds at a very young age. In my elementary school years, I discovered I had a keen ear and began singing along with music I heard at home and in church. At age 10, I began teaching myself guitar, with tuning and some chording assistance from my father. I was soon able to tune by ear. I worked hard at my 3 first chords, and played incessantly. More musical influence from my father began to influence my direction, and obsession such as Experimental, Jazz, Punk Rock, Reggae, Folk, Bluegrass, Hip Hop and more, but it was the Blues that grabbed my attention. My life was altered after hearing the Blues/Gospel of Blind Willie Johnson. Country blues and pre-war American music became a full time passion around age 15. The other pivotal musical experience was hearing John Coltrane at some point in Middle School. This opened my ears and mind to the possibilities of improvisation. At this time I was attempting to translate some of these concepts that I was hearing in country blues, punk, and jazz onto electric guitar. I was trying to comprehend using alternate tunings, using a slide, and eventually alternating bass fingerpicking from various American Folk Music.

My name is John Davis. I'm the performing arts metadata archivist at the University of Maryland. Today I'm speaking with Amanda Huron, co-creator of Brickthrower. Also the Movement Empowerment Solidarity Through Art or MESA zines, during your years in D.C. Am I missing anything zine-wise from the D.C. years? Huron: Not from the D.C. years. I did a zine when I was living in Minnesota, and then I did the final issue of it when I had moved back to D.C. And that was called Splatterspleen. Issue number five, I did when I was here. But the rest of it was Minnesota-based. And then what else? Yeah, no, that’s it for D.C. Davis You were mentioning Minnesota. Huron: Yeah. Davis: So let’s talk about getting into punk in the first place, and what interested you in punk. How did you get into it? Huron: I got into punk in high school here in D.C. I think in 11th grade was when I first heard about Fugazi, so that would have been ’88 or ’89. And a friend of mine—actually, let’s see—10th grade, a friend of mine gave me a tape of the first Fugazi—13 Songs. And the first time I saw them was at All Souls Church, a show with Jawbox and Shudder to Think.
