But the Hawks are facing a classic quandary regarding two of their most important players. Do they extend one player at the expense of further agitating another? That is the question. Larry Drew ‘s first training camp as head coach of the Atlanta Hawks is entering the frisky stages for reasons that have nothing to do with the game of basketball. The facts: Jamal Crawford wants a contract extension or a trade . Al Horford is going to get a lucrative extension worked out sometime in the next couple of weeks, well deserved by the way, which will no doubt infuriate the Crawford camp (since they haven’t been able to engage in serious talks about either of his requests with Hawks management since asking about it in July). The reigning Sixth-Man of the Year award winner, Crawford isn’t the only player coming off of a stellar season that is unhappy with his contract situation. Houston The reigning Most Improved Award winner, Rockets point guard Aaron Brooks , like Crawford a Seattle native, isn’t pleased that the Rockets aren’t interested in negotiating a new deal . Both sides make understandable cases. Crawford and Brooks want security in advance of a new collective bargaining agreement that might not be favorable to the players. Both the Hawks and Rockets have to be cautious in how much they spend for the very same reasons, the uncertainty of the next CBA. They could end up overpaying wildly for players (Horford does not qualify, he’s a 24-year-old All-Star and arguably the second best player in his draft class behind Kevin Durant ) that wouldn’t command the same dollars on free agent market with a different set of parameters designed to benefit the teams. While Hawks general manager Rick Sund has remained silent on his process with both Crawford and Horford, Rockets GM Daryl Morey has provided some wonderfully plain language that should be easy for anyone to follow : “We’re not doing extensions,” Morey said. “Quite a few guys on the team are up for extensions. Just policy-wise, we’re not doing it. “Obviously, every player would want an extension. I don’t blame them for that. All we can do is the best for the Rockets. They’re doing the best for themselves. Make sure they know the reason we’re doing it has nothing to do with how you value the player or anything like that. It’s just we’re trying to keep ourselves as flexible as possible going forward.” What would you do? To extend or not to extend, that is the question. What would you do? Extend Al Horford. It's a no-brainer for the Hawks to make sure they keep him in the fold for as long as they possibly can. Extend Jamal Crawford. The reigning Sixth Man of the Year needs to be rewarded for helping the Hawks join the Eastern Conference elite. Extend Aaron Brooks. The Rockets need Brooks at the helm if they are to return to the playoff ranks in the Western Conference. All of the above. Extend Horford but Crawford and Brooks will just have to wait. He’s already an All-Star and has excellent work ethic so it’s a secure investment. In the Jamal Crawford and Aaron Brooks cases, Hawks and Rockets GM’s should work out something with them (extend, trade or cut) before it’s too late and they damage their respective teams chemistry. Reply will says: October 5, 2010 at 3:58 am The funny thing is i dont think the hawks should extend crawford, because you will guarantee to overpay him, However, the stupid thing is if you do not extend him you weaken your team and make the signing of joe johnson even more miserable, because now you take yourself out of contension and make yourself a little weaker both in the short term and long run. I see it as a lose lose for hawks. They ruined it with the joe johnson signing, and really put themselves in a very tight situation for the next 5 years. • Houston Rockets General Manager's Tweet Sparks Controversy
Houston Rockets General Manager's tweet sparks controversy 08 OCTOBER 2019 Michael A. Rueda PARTNER | HEAD OF US SPORTS AND ENTERTAINMENT | US CATEGORY: BLOG CLIENT TYPES: FAMILY TALENT AND CREATIVES SPORT On October 4th, 2019, during a National Basketball Association (“ NBA”) sponsored trip to China, Houston Rockets general manager, Daryl Morey, tweeted “ght for freedom, stand with Hong Kong.” The tweet has since been deleted, but not before sparking geopolitical controversy and outrage from the Chinese government, which demanded an apology, and announced Tuesday, October 8th that it had canceled the planned broadcast of two NBA exhibition games due to be played in the country. The NBA had Morey apologize and put out a statement characterizing his tweet as “regrettable” and clarifying that his support for Hong Kong protesters “does not represent the Rockets or the NBA.” However, the NBA’s attempt to quell the backlash in China prompted its own backlash from United States law makers, including Ted Cruz, Beto O’Rourke, and Julián Castro who were among those to denounce the NBA for giving in to Chinese condemnations. Now, the commissioner of the NBA, Adam Silver, has announced that the NBA “will not put itself in a position of regulating what players, employees, and team owners say or will not say on these issues,” and added: “It is inevitable that people around the world… will have different viewpoints over different issues. It is not the role of the NBA to adjudicate those differences.” Silver will travel to Shanghai on Wednesday, October 9th to meet with ofcials and some of the NBA’s business partners in hopes of nding some common ground.

  • The National Humiliation Narrative the 1898 French Periodical Le Petit Journal
Teaching Asia’s Giants: China n his speech announcing the founding of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) on October 1, 1949, Chinese Communist Party (CCP) Chairman Mao Zedong famously proclaimed, “Ours will no longer be a nation subject to insult and humiliation. We have stood up.” With those The National Iwords, Mao explained that a new era had begun for China under CCP leadership. To those unfamil- iar with Chinese history, such a proclamation may seem confusing. Didn’t China have 5,000 years of Humiliation a glorious and storied history? What did China have to be insulted or humiliated about? To whom was China standing up? This essay answers these questions from the perspective of the CCP’s historical narrative asso- Narrative ciated with China’s so-called “Century of Humiliation.” The span of history between the start of the First Opium War (1839) and the PRC’s founding at the conclusion of the Chinese Civil War (1949) Dealing with the was an era during which the people of China experienced tremendous social upheaval due to both domestic and foreign factors. • I Hope This Letter Finds You Well. I Have Been Serving the Sixers at Your Pleasure for the Past 34 Months
S A M H INKIE 3601 SOUTH BROAD STREET PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA 19148 April 6, 2016 To the equity partners of Philadelphia 76ers, L.P.: I hope this letter finds you well. I have been serving the Sixers at your pleasure for the past 34 months. Atul Gawande, a Surgeon at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, remains (from afar) one of my favorite reads. He laughs that reading scientific studies has long been a guilty pleasure. Reading investor letters has long been one of mine. What I hope to accomplish here is to give you insight into what has transpired behind the scenes in ways you might not have otherwise heard about. Many of you attended our most recent board meeting in New York, where many of these topics were addressed. But for all twelve of you, I hope that this provides a deeper look into what you have at your organization. Accordingly, you should anticipate some mild cheerleading (of others) sprinkled with a healthy dose of self-flagellation about things I’ve done wrong. There has been much criticism of our approach. There will be more. A competitive league like the NBA necessitates a zig while our competitors comfortably zag. We often chose not to defend ourselves against much of the criticism, largely in an effort to stay true to the ideal of having the longest view in the room. To attempt to convince others that our actions are just will serve to paint us in a different light among some of our competitors as progressives worth emulating, versus adversaries worthy of their disdain.
