OUR OPINION LCMC’s growth a positive sign

he past year has been challenging for all, but espe- cially those in the medical community. T Those challenges, though, have not slowed or deterred the vision at Lake City Medical Center. Last week, for the second time in the past year, the local med- ical facility announced plans for expansion and growth. This second phase of the LCMC expansion will start next month, or roughly when the first phase — a $9 mil- lion, 12-bed expansion — is completed. That addition is just the tipping point of what is com- ing for the regional hospital. The next phase, which will take between 18 and 24 months to complete, will finish out the third floor the hospital added six years ago with 10 additional private rooms. The rest of the $36 million project will include new construction — an addition to the hospital’s emergency room as well as a new building on the back side of the facility’s campus that will allow for growth within support services provided at the hospital. To allow for that new building, the hospital is also moving its helipad to a centralized location, utilizing a part of the current parking lot. Doc Skelton was a friend to many in North Georgia Additional parking will be coming as part of future expansion plans, according to hospital officials. WOMEN’S COLLEGE WORLD SERIES COLLEGE SOFTBALL Coaches say ONE WIN AWAY NCAA can do better with gender equality Oklahoma’s Patty Gasso, FSU’s Lonni Alameda are two who are outspoken on the issue at WCWS.

By CLIFF BRUNT Associated Press

OKLAHOMA CITY — Oklahoma soft- ball coach Patty Gasso has had enough. Her Sooners are closing out another dynamic season by playing Florida State in the best-of-three Women’s College World Series final this week. But lately, she’s had more on her mind than winning between the lines. About a month ago, she lit into the NCAA for its WCWS format. She point- ed out that the men’s College World Series stretches over nearly two weeks and does not include doubleheaders while the women’s tournament lasts no more than a week and forces several teams to play doubleheaders. She said the current format is a health risk for her players, and that she has, at times, been uncomfortable with how she has had to use pitchers while winning her four national titles. Gasso’s ire was raised again this week after Florida State and Oklahoma State played a WCWS game that started at nearly midnight and didn’t end until after 2 a.m. on Sunday. Though a rain delay pushed things back, she felt the situation could have been avoided. In the men’s World Series, there are more days off and more scheduling flexibility. “It’s very uncomfortable when we are talking to our players about standing up for what is right, yet, what is happening around us is not right,” Gasso said.

Staff report

If you were on the soccer field either playing or watching the sport in the last 20-plus years, chances are you saw Perry Sauls. Who is Perry Sauls? He is only one of the most dedicated soccer coaches that Lake City has ever known. Perry stumbled upon his first soccer coach- ing gig by happenstance. About 35 years ago, his son’s team lost their coaches, so he and TD Jenkins decided to take on the task of coaching and that is how it all began. Perry had to roll up his sleeves and learn the game of soccer. After that, it went to a whole new level. Perry coached recreation youth leagues for Sauls CYSA along with competition level travel soccer. Perry also began to coach high school levels for Columbia and Suwannee. This took hundred of hours of devotion and personal time to teach and mentor children. He did all of that all while working a full-time job, and raising his own family, until retiring from PCS a few years ago. The players adore him, and he has become a positive role model in their lives. Most recently he retired as Columbia High School’s junior varsity soccer coach and today coaches a travel team. He remains a constant in many of their lives and still shows up for significant events. The players and parents wanted to honor Sauls for his years of ded- ication on and off the soccer field. He is a good man and deserves rec- ognition for all of the hard work he has put in for the sport and for our children.
