LAURENCE CATHOLIC CHURCH GOOD NEWS REFLECTION READINGS FOR THE WEEK JANUARY SUNDAY Second Sunday of Ordinary Time First Reading 1 Sm 3:3b-10, 19 Second Reading 1 Cor 6:13c-15a, 17-20 17 Gospel Jn 1:35-42 Pray: Your calling, Jesus, is irresistible. When You show Yourself and come to MONDAY meet me, Your love exceeds everything else and I cannot resist You. Thank You for First Reading Heb 5:1-10 calling me by name! Amen. Gospel Mk 2:18-22 WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FOR? 18 Like Jesus did to Andrew, who became one of his first disciples, in this Sunday's Gospel passage, he says to you and to each of us: "What are you looking for?" TUESDAY First Reading Heb 6:10-20 When you pray, and when you look at a crucifix, or when you see a picture of Gospel Mk 2:23-28 Jesus, what exactly are you looking for? Jesus says: "Come and see!" Come and see what? His love? His healing power? 19 His supernatural ability to answer our prayers? Whatever we're looking for, the WEDNESDAY reason we're seeking it is because we don't yet have it. First Reading Heb 7:1-3, 15-17 Gospel Mk 3:1-6 Jesus is the fulfillment of every promise by God the Father. Jesus is the fullness of love, the provider of mercy, the divine healer, the perfect mediator of all our 20 prayers and concerns and everything else we truly need. So, why does it feel like something is still missing? Why do our lives feel incomplete? Why do our prayers THURSDAY seem unanswered? First Reading Heb 7:25—8:6 Gospel Mk 3:7-12 The answer is revealed in what happened after Andrew began to follow Jesus. We read about it in Samuel's response to God's invitation. We proclaim it in the 21 Responsorial Psalm: "Here am I, Lord; I come to do your will." FRIDAY Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children Andrew, his brother Simon Peter, and the other disciples were privileged to witness First Reading Heb 8:6-13 first-hand the wondrous miracles of Jesus. They personally experienced God's Gospel Mk 3:13-19 love through the gentle eyes of Jesus, the tone of kindness in his voice, and the forgiveness that was visible in his smile. 22 SATURDAY Yet with all of this, they did not really find all that they were looking for (remember First Reading Heb 9:2-3, 11-14 how easily Peter felt afraid or confused or uncertain) until they were on the giving Gospel Mk 3:20-21 end of it. They didn't discover the fullness of Jesus until Jesus was no longer present in the flesh and they accepted their calling to continue Christ's earthly 23 ministry. SUNDAY Third Sunday of Ordinary Time The same is true for us who have never seen Jesus' actual eyes or heard his actual First Reading Jon 3:1-5, 10 voice. We find what we're seeking when we give it to others. Why? Because then Second Reading 1 Cor 7:29-31 we discover that we really had it all along! This is the miracle of "Here am I, Lord; I Gospel Mk 1:14-20 come to do your will." 24 Questions for Personal Reflection: What do you need from Jesus that he doesn't seem to be providing yet? At the core of your prayer requests, what is it you're really seeking? How can you find it by doing the will of PRAYING THE NEWS | JANUARY 17, 2021 God? Contemplate this question until you figure out something to do. Then do it and see what happens. “Behold, the Lamb of God.” Questions for Community Faith Sharing: Describe a time when you gave away what you thought JOHN 1:36 you didn't have. Perhaps it was money or time. Perhaps Dear Lord, John the Baptist, proclaimed you to humankind as a holy sign of it was patience or hope or love itself. How were you peace and sacrifice. Today, as we are mindful of the recent violence at the doing the will of God? What happened to your own U.S. Capitol and anticipate the inauguration of a new president, we pray that needs afterward? your selflessness and peace will cover and inspire all in thought and action – those who govern and the people they serve.
