St. Valentine Church Heartline Mission Statement: Guided by the Holy Spirit, we strive to live and share the Good News of Jesus Christ so that all may come to know God. As a Catholic Church and School Community we welcome, serve, teach, learn, reconcile and provide comfort and hope in the spirit of St Valentine. 6th Sunday of Easter and a note of appreciation May 17, As we approach the end of the Easter season our readings begin 2020 to focus on the Holy Spirit that awaits us on Pentecost. In the first reading from the Acts of the Apostles we read that Philip proclaimed Jesus Christ to the city of Samaria. After they had accepted the word of God, Peter and John were sent to them to pray for them that they might“receive the Holy Spirit, for it had not yet fallen upon any of them. Then they laid hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.” (Acts.8:1617). The Catechism says that “the imposition of hands is rightly recognized by the Catholic tradition as the origin of the sacrament of Confirmation, which in a certain way perpetuates the grace of Pentecost in the Church” (CCC 1288). Receiving the Sacrament and its gifts we are obliged to spread the Gospel through “word and deed” because we all have received the gifts of the Holy Spirit, which consist of fortitude, wisdom, knowledge, understanding, fear of the Lord, piety and counsel. In the Gospel Jesus did not pose the question, Do you love me, a question that was asked by Tevye to Golde in the movie, Fiddler on the Roof. But he was more direct when He said:“If you love me, you will keep my commandments.” And toward the end of the Gospel he said: “Whoever has my commandments and observes them is the one who loves me.” (Jh.14:15 & 21).In the response that Golde gave to Tevye, love was shown in actions, not words. Jesus asks this same thing of us who call ourselves His followers. We show we are His disciples by keeping His commandments. For Jesus, love is a verb, not a noun. It is an action more than an emotion.Let us use our gifts to spread the Gospel in whatever way we can, be it in our neighborhood our homes or our workplaces. And through our actions we will prove that we truly love our Lord. Do my parishioners love me? I did not have to ask that question because in my mind there was no doubt that you truly love me. I have experienced that in all these years of my ministry be it at OLL or St. Val’s. The amount of greeting cards that I receive be it on my birthday, Christmas, Easter or Anniversary words of encouragement, prayers and love that is expressed in those greetings I knew I was loved. Sixth Sunday of Easter Last Sunday, May 10, I was truly taken by surprise to see a great number of you who showed your appreciation towards me as I celebrate my 21st Ordination anniversary. When I heard of the drive by wishes and greetings I thought maybe 40 to 50 cars but the number was astounding. 130 cars with some cars filled to the full not only with people but even pets. It was truly amazing. I just want to say Thank You, Thank You, Thank You. It’s you who have helped me in my years of ministry, it’s because of your kindness and love shown to me that makes me give more of what I have. The 21stPriesthood anniversary will go down in history as one of the best. This is what COVID19 has done M it has brought out creative ideas to make any celebration memorable. I have enjoyed serving you all these years, and as long as I get this opportunity to serve you I will do the best I can to give my all to you and to the Lord. As we make this journey together, let us hold one another in our prayers. It’s my duty to pray for the flock that is entrusted to me and I do it every day. May we continue to experience Jesus’ love for us and may we continue to spread it around joyfully. And once again, Thank you for making a joyful noise in honor of my 21stOrdination Anniversary. Blessings on all, Fr.
