Sugarcane is the world’s most prolifc crop, and several stemborer species from the families Noctuidae, Tortricidae, Crambidae and Pyralidae attack sugarcane. Australia is currently free of the most damaging stemborers, but biosecurity eforts are hampered by the difculty in morphologically distinguishing stemborer species. Here we assess the utility of DNA barcoding in identifying stemborer pest species. We review the current state of the COI barcode sequence library for sugarcane stemborers, assembling a dataset of 1297 sequences from 64 species. Sequences were from specimens collected and identifed in this study, downloaded from BOLD or requested from other authors. We performed species delimitation analyses to assess species diversity and the efectiveness of barcoding in this group. Seven species exhibited <0.03 K2P interspecifc diversity, indicating that diagnostic barcoding will work well in most of the studied taxa. We identifed 24 instances of identifcation errors in the online database, which has hampered unambiguous stemborer identifcation using barcodes. Instances of very high within-species diversity indicate that nuclear markers (e.g. 18S, 28S) and additional morphological data (genitalia dissection of all lineages) are needed to confrm species boundaries.

D. Kravchenko, M. Fibiger, J. Mooser, A. Junnila & G. C. Müller Abstract In Israel, 20 species of tribe Apameini belonging to 10 genera have been found to date. Four species are endemic of the Levant (Sesamia ilonae, Luperina kravchenkoi, Gortyna gyulaii and Lenisa wiltshirei). Others are mostly Palaearctic, Mediterranean, Iranian and Irano-Turanian elements. Grassland species of the Apameini are mainly associated with the Temperate region and are univoltine with highest rate of occurrence in May, or in autumn. Most wetland and oases species are multivoltine and occur in oases and riverbeds over the country, though few of the species are extremely localized. The S. ilonae is presently known only from northern area of the Sea of Galilee, while A. deserticola is from oases of the Dead Sea area.

An area of about 1.5 fed. was cultivated with corn to study the influence of planting dates, nitrogen fertilizer levels and planting spaces between hills on corn infestation with the European corn borer, Ostrinia nubilalis Hub.. Corn plants sown in April plantation were subjected to the least numbers of O. nubilalis larvae with average numbers of 1.7±0.9 and 2.1±0.9 larvae / 5 plants while in June plantation, the larvae occurred with a moderate numbers with averages of 5.0±1.4 and 8.6±2.2 and reached its maximum in July plantation with averages of 54.3±11.5 and 80.5±15.7 larvae / 5 plants during the two successive seasons. The statistical analysis revealed highly significant differences in the number of the insect larvae between the three planting dates. Increase of nitrogen fertilizer levels from zero to 360 kg / fed. caused significant increase in the numbers of infested plants and percentages of infestation. Non-destructive and destructive methods were used to measure the infestation parameters (holes on the stems, the presence of caterpillars and leaf with characteristics holes). Tested at a significance level of 5% with the Student's T-test, the mean levels of these parameters of infestation were almost all different (p < 0, 05) between localities and years. With an infection rate of 15.05% for the 2010-2011 season and 13.9% for the 2011-2012, the locality of Balaza was the most infested with Lepidopteran stem borers; and specie Sesamia cretica (Lederer) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) was the most abundant and accounted for over 60% of caterpillars collected.

As a polyphagous pest, five commodity pathways were examined in detail. Aggregating across these and other pathways, we estimate that tens of thousands to over a million individual larvae could enter the EU annually on host commodities. Instigating risk reduction options on sweetcorn, a principal host, reduces entry on that pathway 100-fold. However, sweetcorn imports are a small proportion of all S. frugiperda host imports, several of which are already regulated and further regulation is estimated to reduce the median number entering over all pathways by approximately 10%. Low temperatures limit the area for establishment but small areas of Spain, Italy and Greece can provide climatic conditions suitable for establishment. If infested imported commodities are distributed across the EU in proportion to consumer population, a few hundreds to a few thousands of individuals would reach NUTS 2 regions within which suitable conditions for establishment exist.

IN MAIZE FIELDS YACOUB, SH.S. plant protection research institute, ARC, Dokki, Giza (Manuscript received 19 October, 2010) Abstract Leaves of lemongrass and Pigeon berry belonging to two different plant families were extracted in water, petroleum ether and acetone, in addition, to two biopesticides, a bacterial one (Dipel 2X) and entomopathogenic fungi (Biofly) and their mixtures with the two plants used extracted in water in controlling the pink stem borer Sesamia cretica Led. in maize fields during the early summer plantation 2010 season. Data demonstrated that both of lemongrass extract in water, acetone and their mixtures with Biofly achieved the highest reduction percentages in egg-masses. Also, extract of Pigeon berry in acetone showed the highest reduction percentages in the two symptoms of infestation (perforated leaves and dead hearts), the same percentages were obtained either from Pigeon berry with Dipel or Dipel 2X alone in the dead heart cases. (The harvest maize yield was calculated after 120 days from sowing as ardab / feddan). Data obtained from laboratory tests was almost in the same trend as those obtained in the field in which the shortest LT50 values at 5% concentration were calculated for all the treatmnets. It could be concluded that plant extracts which resulted in the highest reduction percentage in egg-masses, larvae and dead heart cases were the same in obtaining the heaviest yield besides decreasing the environment pollution and definitely more save for farmers in comparison with the recommended chemical pesticide.
