E-mail: [email protected] Abstract In the present study, a checklist of new records of the family Chalcididae of Egypt is presented based on a total of 180 specimens collected from 24 different Egyptian localities between June 2011 and October 2016, mostly by sweeping and Malaise traps. Nineteen species as well as the subfamily Epitraninae and the genera Bucekia Steffan, Epitranus Walker, Proconura Dodd, and Tanycoryphus Cameron, are newly recorded from Egypt. A single species previously placed in the genus Hockeria is transferred to Euchalcis Dufour as E. rufula (Nikol’skaya, 1960) comb. nov. Key words: Parasitic wasps, Chalcidinae, Dirhininae, Epitraninae, Haltichellinae, new records, new combination Introduction The Chalcididae (Hymenoptera: Chalcidoidea) is a medium-sized family represented by more than 1500 described species in 93 genera (Aguiar et al. 2013; Noyes 2017; Abul-Sood et al. 2018). A large number of described species are classified in the genus Brachymeria Westwood (about 21%), followed by Conura Spinola (20.3%) (Noyes 2017). -

Le Ru5,6, Desmond Conlong7,8, Kevin Powell 9, Andrew Ward10 & Andrew Mitchell1 Lepidopteran stemborers are among the most damaging agricultural pests worldwide, able to reduce crop yields by up to 40%. Sugarcane is the world’s most prolifc crop, and several stemborer species from the families Noctuidae, Tortricidae, Crambidae and Pyralidae attack sugarcane. Australia is currently free of the most damaging stemborers, but biosecurity eforts are hampered by the difculty in morphologically distinguishing stemborer species. Here we assess the utility of DNA barcoding in identifying stemborer pest species. We review the current state of the COI barcode sequence library for sugarcane stemborers, assembling a dataset of 1297 sequences from 64 species. Sequences were from specimens collected and identifed in this study, downloaded from BOLD or requested from other authors. We performed species delimitation analyses to assess species diversity and the efectiveness of barcoding in this group. Seven species exhibited <0.03 K2P interspecifc diversity, indicating that diagnostic barcoding will work well in most of the studied taxa. We identifed 24 instances of identifcation errors in the online database, which has hampered unambiguous stemborer identifcation using barcodes. Instances of very high within-species diversity indicate that nuclear markers (e.g. 18S, 28S) and additional morphological data (genitalia dissection of all lineages) are needed to confrm species boundaries. -

D. Kravchenko, M. Fibiger, J. Mooser, A. Junnila & G. C. Müller Abstract In Israel, 20 species of tribe Apameini belonging to 10 genera have been found to date. Four species are endemic of the Levant (Sesamia ilonae, Luperina kravchenkoi, Gortyna gyulaii and Lenisa wiltshirei). Others are mostly Palaearctic, Mediterranean, Iranian and Irano-Turanian elements. Grassland species of the Apameini are mainly associated with the Temperate region and are univoltine with highest rate of occurrence in May, or in autumn. Most wetland and oases species are multivoltine and occur in oases and riverbeds over the country, though few of the species are extremely localized. The S. ilonae is presently known only from northern area of the Sea of Galilee, while A. deserticola is from oases of the Dead Sea area. -

Arthropod fauna of the UAE, 6: 225–274 (2017) Order Hymenoptera, family Chalcididae Gérard Delvare INTRODUCTION The Chalcididae belong to a medium-sized family of parasitoids with 96 genera and 1469 species in the World (Aguiar et al., 2013). Their size ranges from 1.5 to 15 mm and their body is hard with surface sculpture consisting of umbilic punctures. They are predominantly black, sometimes with yellow and/or red markings, rarely with metallic reflections. The sexual dimorphism is minimal except in Haltichellinae, where the flagellum of the male is thicker and the scape possibly modified (Plates 18–21). Recognition: The family belongs to the huge superfamily Chalcidoidea, which now includes 22 families (Heraty et al., 2013). In this group the mesosoma exhibits a special triangular sclerite – the prepectus – which separates the pronotum from the tegula (Plates 7, 8). This plate is also present in Chalcididae but is quite reduced here (Plates 5, 29). The family is mostly recognized by the enlarged metafemur, which is toothed or serrulate on the ventral margin, and the strongly curved metatibia (Plates 26, 48, 57, 94, 131). Some representatives of other chalcid families (Torymidae: Podagrionini and some Pteromalidae: Cleonyminae) also have an enlarged metafemur (Plate 9) but here the prepectus is expanded as usual and well visible as a triangular plate (Plate 8); in addition the relevant groups exhibit metallic reflections (Plate 7). Finally the sculpture of the propodeum is quite different: it is almost always areolate in the Chalcididae (Plate 3), but never exhibits such ornamentation in the non-chalcidid families (Plate 6) The Leucospidae, with the single genus Leucospis Fabricius, 1775, would also be mixed with the Chalcididae as they also share their character states. -

Inst., Sakha Agricultural Research Station ABSTRACT The present studies were carried out during two successive seasons; 2006 and 2007 at Sakha Agricultural Research Station Kafr El-Sheikh Governorate. An area of about 1.5 fed. was cultivated with corn to study the influence of planting dates, nitrogen fertilizer levels and planting spaces between hills on corn infestation with the European corn borer, Ostrinia nubilalis Hub.. Corn plants sown in April plantation were subjected to the least numbers of O. nubilalis larvae with average numbers of 1.7±0.9 and 2.1±0.9 larvae / 5 plants while in June plantation, the larvae occurred with a moderate numbers with averages of 5.0±1.4 and 8.6±2.2 and reached its maximum in July plantation with averages of 54.3±11.5 and 80.5±15.7 larvae / 5 plants during the two successive seasons. The statistical analysis revealed highly significant differences in the number of the insect larvae between the three planting dates. Increase of nitrogen fertilizer levels from zero to 360 kg / fed. caused significant increase in the numbers of infested plants and percentages of infestation. When the corn plants were supplied with 360, 260, 160 and zero kg nitrogen / fed., the average numbers of infested plants with O. -

The Chalcididae represent a large group of parasitic Hymenoptera which para sitise pupal or larval stages of various insects including several pests. Their phylogeny is not so far clearly known. but a Eurytomid-Torymid line of accent could be postulated. There is a general resemblance in their adult behaviour such as emergence, courtship, mating, oviposition. feeding etc. Their hosts belong to Lepidoptera, Dipteru, Hymenoptera, Neuroptera. Coleoptera and Strepsiptera. Keywords, Chalcididuc: Biosystematics. 1. Introduction The Chalcididae (S. Str.) represents a large group of parasitic wasps (Hymenoptera: Chalcidoidea) which parasitise various insects, many of which are of economic importance. Their hosts include the blackheaded caterpillar of coconut, the cotton leaf-roller, the padyskipper, the diamond back moth of cabbage, the gypsy moth, the castor capsule borer as well as extremely large number of other pests. Unfortunately many species.of Chalcididae look very much alike while they differ widely in habits. Hence, precise identification of the species or infraspecific categories is highly important in any host-parasite studies involving these insects which are important, interesting and difficult (taxonomically) parasitic insects. The study of Chalcididae may be said to have begun well before 200 years ago when Linnaeus (1758) discovered and reported a few species. Since then several authors have contributed to the knowledge of this family and some of the important contributions are those by Fabricius (1775, 1787), Walker (1834, 1841, 1862), Westwood (1829), Dalla Torre (1898), Dalman (1820), Spinola (1811), Motschulsky (1863), Forster (1859), Fonscolornbe (1840), Cresson (1872), Klug (1834) and Kirby (1883).
