Starting racing relatively late in comparison to 99.9 per cent of drivers, Andrew entered his first karting event at the age of 16 and instantly proved his natural flair and ability on track by challenging for honours almost immediately. Stepping up to senior level competition in 2005, he finished an impressive third overall in the Irish Rotax Max Karting Championship with just five points splitting the top three in the standings. He then won his first title with victory in the Athboy Club Karting Championship. Moving to European level action the following year, Andrew produced another superb display which completely belied his minimal experience. After a mere three years in karting, Andrew made the move into car racing in 2007 after signing with the JHR Developments squad to compete in the ultra- competitive ELF Renault Clio Cup one-make saloon car championship. Proving his ability beyond any shadow of a doubt, Andrew’s debut got off to a terrific start as he enjoyed a top 10 performance on his debut at Brands Hatch. From there, he went on to become a podium finisher in his first season and then claimed his maiden race win in the 2007 Winter Championship, which he also concluded as Vice-Champion. Moving into more powerful machinery for his second season of car racing in 2008, Andrew stepped up to the SEAT Cupra Championship with a JHR-run 300bhp turbo-charged Leon Cupra. He became a regular front-runner among a whole host of highly experienced racers, taking a total of five podiums. History The beginning of competition Motoring events began soon after the construction of the first successful gasoline-fueled automobiles. The first organized contest was on April 28, 1887, by the chief editor of Paris publication Le Vélocipède, Monsieur Fossier. It ran 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) from Neuilly Bridge to the Bois de Boulogne. It was won by Georges Bouton of the De Dion-Bouton Company, in a car he had constructed with Albert, the Comte de Dion, but as he was the only competitor to show up it is rather difficult to call it a race. Another solo event occurred in 1891 when Auguste Doriot and Louis Rigoulot of Peugeot drove their gasoline-fueled Type 3 Quadricycle in the bicycle race from Paris–Brest–Paris. By the time they reached Brest, the winning cyclist Charles Terront was already back in Paris. In order to publicly prove the reliability and performance of the 'Quadricycle' Armand Peugeot had persuaded the organiser, Pierre Giffard of Le Petit Journal, to use his network of monitors and marshalls to vouchsafe and report the vehicle's performance. The intended distance of 1200 km had never been achieved by a motorised vehicle, it being about three times further than the record set by Leon Serpollet from Paris to Lyon.[1][2] Auto racing 2 Paris–Rouen: the world's first motoring contest On July 23, 1894, the Parisian magazine Le Petit Journal organized what is considered to be the world's first motoring competition from Paris to Rouen.
