Ta/oyoak RankIng on New Construction Needs Ust Dear Mr. Audla, The Taloyoak Houslns Authority Board of Directors Is concemed over the fact that our community has not been allocated new Public Housing units for the second year In a row. We would like to know where Taloyoak stands on the new construction needs list and when we should expect new Public Housing units. Taloyoak was allocated only one new PubUc Houslns S-plex In the fall of 2016, which Is stili under construction today. Based on our latest Watt Ust numbers we are currently short of 94 Public Housing units - for a tota1 of 228 people affected (94 applicants, spouses and children). This represents 23% of the 1,029 populitlon of Taloyoak waitlnl to let a Public Housing untt.17 of the 94 Public Housing applicants have been waiting for over B years. As we are worklnl hard on getting young people to apply we can expect this number to grow exponentlally as more youth tu,n 19 and become elislble to apply for Public Houslns. Finally, we would appreciate If you could ,Ive us a prosress update on the development and desJsn of units more suItable for Elders, as expressed In your response letter dated October 15, 2018. Staff Houslns for LHO Employees Dear Mr. Audla, The Taloyoak Housins Authority Board of Directors 15 concerned over the lack of dedicated staff houslnl units for LHO staff. As It stands now and In accordance with the current policy In place set forth by the Nunawt Housing Corporation our Board has allowed the use of 2 Public Hauslna units for the purpose of housiRl 3 Maintenance staff recruited outside of the territory. As the local stamnl capacity is very limited and while we lulde 3 local apprentices throush the apprenticeship system these key manasement and trades positions are absolutely necessary to our operatlons. We are frustrated by the lack of staff housing resources available to LHO's, under the pretense that lHO employees are not Government of Nunavut employees, yet we receive our funding from Nunavut Hauslna Corporation which ultimately comes from the Government of Nunavut. These 2 Public Houslnl units were funded by various levels of lovemment to alleviate the housing crisis, yet they are being used for a completely different purpose. Taloyoak has had 2 GN Staff Housing slnale dwelling units vacant for a year now, while a brand new GN Staff Housing S-plex Is nearlns completion. This vacancy 15 in stark contrast with our territorial housins crisis where Public Housing applicants routinely wait 5+ years to set a unit. There Is room for Improvement and we feel that a review needs to take place. Would like to see chanles in the GN Staff Housing Policy and Management Agreement to allow LHO staff access to GN Staff Housing units, especially In smaller communities where developed rental markets are non-exlstent. This solution would free up Public Houslnl units for the ones who need It the most. Taloyoak Housing Authority Board of Directors CC.
