Trop., 31(2) : 327-331, 1983 Estudio comparativo al microscopio de luz y al Microscopio Electrónico de Barrido de Laternea triscapa, Laternea pusilla y Ligiella rodrigu eziana J. A. Sáenz, Julieta Carranza y Vera Sáenz Gómez Escuela de Biología, Universidad de Costa Rica (Recibido para su publicación el 11 de marzo de 1983) Abstract: A comparative anatomical study of Laternea triscapa, L. pusilla and Ligie/la rodrigueziana under light and scanning electron microscopy confirmed the validity of the genus Ligiella. The main differences between the two genera was established on the basis of the form, structure and location of the specialized glebiferous tissue, the glebiferous chamber and the gleba. The presence of an eight-spored basidium is re ported and illustrated for the first time in Clathraceae. Description and illustration of sections of inmature fruiting bodies of the three species are included. The presence or absence of specialized glebiferous tissue is suggested as the starting point in the taxonomy of the Clathraceae. Los estudios ultraestructurales y comparati rrollados. The type species of the genus, I. galericulata, is commonly known as the Jacaranda stinkhorn molecular phylogeny in Pretoria, South Africa, which is the only area where the fungus is known outside the Americas. The Phallomycetidae common name is derived from its association with the South American originating Jacaranda mimosifolia phalloid fungi trees in the city. The aim of this study was to consider the unusual occurrence of the fungus in South South Africa Africa, to place it on the available Phallales phylogeny and to test whether it merits generic status. Fresh stinkhorns basidiomes were collected during the summer of 2015 and sequenced. Phylogenetic analyses were based on sequence data for the nuc-LSU-rDNA (LSU) and ATPase subunit 6 (ATP6) regions. The results showed that I. rosea and I. galericulata are phylogenetically related.

BOLETIN DE LA SOCIEDAD ARG'ENTINA DE BOTANICA 24 (1-2): 131-136, Julio, 1985 UNA NUEVA ESPECIE DE CLATHRUS (EUMYCOTA, PHALLALES)1 Por LAURA S. DOMINGUEZ DE TOLEDO2 SUMMARY A new species Clathrus argentinus L. Domínguez (ser. Latemoid) is des¬ cribed and illustrated. It has been found in the Provinces of Jujuy and Córdo¬ ba in Argentina; This is the fourth species recorded for the Argentine territory. The species bears affinities with Clathrus ruber Micheli ex Persoon from which it differs by its free columns (vertical arms), the occurrence of a glebifer and the nature of the arms tubes. Con motivo de mi trabajo de tesis sobre Gasteromycetes del centro de Argentina he tenido la ocasión de estudiar materiales que han resultado pertenecer a una nueva especie, que creo conveniente dar a conocer. Clathrus argentinus L. Domínguez nov. sp. (Fig. 1 A-P) Volva albido-eburnea, alutacea, 1-3 cm lata, 1,2-3,3 cm alta, infeme reticulata. AN ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATIONOF Kentaro Hosaka for the degree of Doctor ofPhilosophy in Botany and Plant Pathology presented on October 26, 2005. Title: Systematics, Phylogeny, andBiogeography of the Hysterangiales and Related Taxa (Phallomycetidae, Homobasidiomycetes). Abstract approved: Redacted for Privacy Monophyly of the gomphoid-phalloid dadewas confirmed based on multigene phylogenetic analyses. Four major subclades(Hysterangiales, Geastrales, Gomphales and Phallales) were also demonstratedto be monophyletic. The interrelationships among the subclades were, however, not resolved, andalternative topologies could not be rejected statistically. Nonetheless, most analyses showed that the Hysterangiales and Phallales do not forma monophyletic group, which is in contrast to traditional taxonomy. The higher-level phylogeny of thegomphoid-phalloid fungi tends to suggest that the Gomphales form a sister group with either the Hysterangialesor Phallales. Unweighted parsimonycharacter state reconstruction favorsthe independent gain of the ballistosporic mechanism in the Gomphales, but the alternativescenario of multiple losses of ballistospoiy could not be rejected statistically underlikelihood- based reconstructions. This latterhypothesis is consistent with thewidely accepted hypothesis that the loss of ballistosporyis irreversible. The transformationof fruiting body forms from nongastroid to gastroidwas apparent in the lineage leading to Gautieria (Gomphales), but thetree topology and character statereconstructions supported that truffle-like

Bento Gonçalves 9500, Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil *Correspondence to [email protected] Abstract — Two species in the Phallales (Agaricomycetes), Laternea pusilla and Lysurus cruciatus, are recorded as new to Chile. We also present a discussion and a key to the phalloid species known to occur in the country. Key words — Clathrus, gasteromycetes, Ileodictyon, Phallus, stinkhorns Introduction Phalloid fungi, commonly known as stinkhorns, may produce basidiomata with very distinct morphologies, but all are characterized by an ovoid structure during the immature stage. Most species produce an expanded basidiome when mature, but others (e.g., in Protubera Möller, Claustula K.M. Curtis, Gelopellis Zeller, maintain the glebal tissue enclosed by the peridium in a sequestrate structure. The gleba is usually mucilaginous and fetid, which facilitates the spores’ dispersion by insects. Phallales E. Fisch. is traditionally classified in two families, mainly based on basidiome development and morphology: Clathraceae Chevall. and Phallaceae Corda (Fischer 1898-99, Pilát 1958, Kirk et al. 2008). Recent sequence analyses support these two families as monophyletic clades, but four additional families are accepted: Claustulaceae G. Cunn., Lysuraceae Corda, Protophallaceae Zeller, and Trappeaceae P.M.

  • Ecology, Anatomy and Redescription of Laternea Pusilla by J . A. Sáenz the Genus Laternea Was Established by Turpin ( 1 822)
Rev. Biol. Trop., 24(1): 109-121, 1976 Ecology, anatomy and redescription of Laternea pusilla by J. A. Sáenz * (Received for publication November 20, 1975) Abstraet: Laternea pusilla, found on rotting Jogs_ in Costa Rica (Central America) is redescribed. The receptac1e is formed by 2, 3, or 4 arms instead of just 2 as originally reported. Comparative ecological observations of the species during several months, in its natural habitat and at different altitudes and environments are presented. Anatomical studies show that the receptac1e 01' L pusilla originates from primordial tissue aboye the rhizomorph. Initially the rece'1tacle forms a chambered un!t which branches into 2, 3, or 4 arms, similarly chambered. The branches finally encompass the gleba, which is swept up and left suspended underneath the arch of the receptac1e arms. As the fruiting body develops, the outer chambers of the arms are disrupted and form the crests of the mature body, while the upper inner chambcrs givc rise to the trabecular slructure that holds the lantern and the suspended gleba. Laternea is shown to be the valid name for the genus rather than Colonnaria Raf., which is either a synonym of Cla thrus or a third genlls. Co lonnaria pereximia L. D. Gómez, on the basis of the variability of Latemea pusilla as to the nllmber of arms of the receptacle, is considercd synonymous with the latter. The genus Laternea was established by Turpin (1822) to contain /-atemea triscapa, and Berkeley and Curtis (1869) described L. pusi/la based on two sporophores found in Cuba and now in the Kew Gardens Herbarium.
