Landulph News Your guide to what’s happening in the area Celebrating issue No. 50 April / May 2014 Newsletter – 50 editions and still going strong Your newsletter started in 2006 following almost unanimous encouragement in the 2004 Parish Plan. It was launched by a small group of volunteers and with generous grant funding, and over the years has grown in confidence and interest. A quick scan at one sitting of all the editions highlights the ebbs and flows. For example in the early years there were repeated notes about the awful broadband reception, about the excitement of imminent affordable housing development, and about dog poo litter. The Spaniards Inn regularly advertised its amenities until its sudden closure in 2008, since when reports of its unsuccessful planning application have been prominent. Over the years we’ve read about the demise of the WI, First Responders, snooker club, badminton club and the summer carnival/fun day. We’ve seen the new film club, art group, Jack’s charitable fundraising (since 2006) instead of sending local Xmas cards, a book exchange in the old telephone box, as well as the many longer-running clubs and events that help cement the community spirit. The newsletter can be proud of its separate booklets on the history of the pub, of the old school, and of the parish during WW2. Hidden in the back numbers are other historical one-offs which deserve to be revived as collections in a new booklet. And it would be nice to see a resumption of the articles about new residents, new councillors, old/long stay residents etc. That’s just an observation, not a criticism; I know how much effort goes into producing the newsletter and congratulate all who have contributed to it over the years. Morton McLeod Parish Council Regular attendees at Parish Council meetings could be forgiven for feeling they were suffering from Groundhog Day syndrome. Japanese knotweed, potholes and Broadmoor Farm once again filled the agenda without much new being said. Cllr Mac Armstrong raised the subject of the security camera at the industrial estate and asked whether it was legal to have it directed at the public highway. In the planning part of the meeting councillors raised no objections to proposals to create two holiday homes at Lower Marsh Farm. The units would be in the existing barn conversion and in one wing of the house. News from Landulph Memorial Hall Next Generation: The project is now almost complete. The Under 5s will start in the new room at the beginning of the summer term (see separate report). The new kitchen in the old store room is finished. The crockery and cutlery are second-hand and will be replaced with new when funds permit. The kitchen will be available when booking the annexe and will be suitable for small parties, lunches or suppers. The whole project has been made possible thanks to our own fundraising and donations but also by grants from The Cornwall Community Foundation, Awards for All, Big Lottery Fund, The Bernard Sunley Trust, The Norman Family Charitable Trust, The Prince of Wales’s Charitable Foundation and the Sustainable Development Fund from the Tamar Valley AONB. The building work and alterations were done by Orchard Solutions. Currently the room is known as the Old Snooker Room, the Next Generation room or the New Room. What do you think it should be called? Send your suggestion on a postcard or by email please to the address below. There will be no prizes but the satisfaction that you have beaten the hall committee who could not think of a name! AGM: This was recently held and Diane Gregory, Alex Cox and Nicola Small resigned. Thanks to all of them for their help and support. Jane Mcrill, Shirley Wilson and Doreen Darke have joined the committee. Dog Fouling: Dog fouling is occurring in the hall grounds. The staff has to check the ground before the Under 5’s are able to go outside to play. Please can you make sure your dog does not leave deposits in the hall grounds? Thank you. Central America by Bus and Boat: was the title of a talk given by Jane Mcrill to raise funds for the hall. Thank you Jane, it was a good afternoon and £162 was raised. Several people thought this may be something we could do again, so it will be considered by the committee, perhaps as a bi-monthly afternoon talk over the winter months. WW1 Commemoration: The hall committee agreed to hold an event to mark this, more details after the next hall committee meeting. Gates: Gates are being put in place that will allow the Under 5s to access their outdoor play area safely. This will be much better than the orange netting they currently use. These will only be shut during their sessions at the hall. It will perform a mixture of well-known songs, both early(Morley, Pearsall and Wilbye) and 20th century (including Delius and Vaughan Williams). Those who have attended SWCC concerts in the past always comment on their enjoyment of arrangements of traditional songs by Stephen Trahair (SWCC Musical Director); they will not be disappointed with items such as Shenandoah, Down in the river to pray and Oranges and Lemons. The programme also includes pieces by the composer of the moment, Eric Whitacre (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D 7o7BrlbaDs) and some twenties swing. On 22 June at 6pm we also welcome back international violinist Rebekka Hartmann and harpsichordist Caroline Bergius. They have performed in the region a number of Meinhard Holler times and are on this occasion bringing cellist Meinhard Holler. The programme will include two Bach sonatas for violin, harpsichord and cello continuo, plus a trio sonata of Buxtehude. There will be solo items and a Handel sonata for cello and continuo. Tickets for both events will be available from 1 May from Phillida Jermain (Tel:01752 847546) or at the door. Early booking is advised as we anticipate a full church. Proceeds to the Landulph Church fabric fund. Also we shall be following the children's interest in all types of machines including space machines and aliens. The Pre-school walked up the hill to visit Park Farm in February. Thanks to Richard Brown for allowing us to all take turns to bottle feed a lamb! The children love this annual trip, they were very surprised at the lambs powerful suck on the bottle! Mr Arundell, the head teacher of Landulph Primary School and Mrs Yull the reception teacher, are to be visiting pre-school on a regular basis to begin to get to know the children going up to school in September. They will also provide us with some helpful supervision and feedback to staff in line with Ofsted recommendations. We are spending grant money from the Co-op and Cornwall County Council on new furniture for our Next Generation Room. We plan to move into the room for the summer term, the committee, staff and children are all very excited to move in! Valentines Band Evening Thank you to all who braved the storm and came out to support The Landulph Under Fives Valentines Band night. There were gales to battle through and a fallen tree to negotiate - but still people attended the evening and raised a massive £2,100, all of which will go towards Landulph Under Fives and the Next Generation room. The Hall and Annexe looked very pretty and romantic making a fabulous party atmosphere. The band Keiko Rise, having come all the way from Penzance, were a real hit with the locals and kept them dancing till late. Thank you to everyone who helped out and for supporting the night, and an even bigger thank you to Jo, Mel and Carly for organising a wonderful evening! In addition, thanks to all of you who generously bought tickets and helped raise an additional £510 towards the Next Generation room.
