Five StarsBy Javedan FamilyVery much enjoyed it0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Wonderfully writtenBy B. ClementsA very nice romp through the early part of Omid's life before he started stand-up. Omid Djalili's childhood was unconventional, to say the least. He was raised in a beautiful, chaotic, cramped, colourful and legally dubious guesthouse where his parents fed and watered Iranian nationals flocking to the UK. Over twenty years almost 2000 'cousins' passed through the Djalili's doors and the young Omid played translator to each. Although these years taught him a lot about the rich tapestry of life, this parenting by committee led to a slightly chequered school career which saw Omid taking his A levels a record six times and eventually fake his own university entrance papers.

  • Taking Belief Seriously Seminar
Governance Unit Taking Belief Seriously Summary of the BBC Governors' Seminar on Religion 13th May 2005 Taking Belief Seriously BBC Governors’ Seminar on Religion Background On Friday 13th May 2005 the Board of Governors held a seminar, Taking Belief Seriously. Chaired by the Rev Dr Colin Morris, former BBC Head of Religious Broadcasting and Controller of BBC Northern Ireland, the seminar explored how the BBC could better reflect the increasing impact of religion and belief on the modern world, with compelling and popular programmes. The focus of the seminar was not on broadcasting for religious audiences, but on how mainstream programmes, from news and factual to drama and entertainment, can directly or indirectly reflect the experience of belief. Its aim was not to critique current output or decide editorial policy, but to debate issues and through that debate help generate creative ideas for future programmes. The Governors’ decision to hold a seminar resulted from two pieces of work they commissioned on the BBC’s Religious output. The reports, both published in full, examined the impartiality of the BBC’s religious output and the performance of the BBC's religion strategy for television, approved by the Board in 2002. The seminar was arranged as an opportunity to discuss the issues raised by the two reports. The Chairman and Board of Governors were joined at the seminar by the Director- General, senior executive and editorial staff and the Central Religious Advisory Council (CRAC). A panel of outside experts was invited to lead discussion

  • Comedy As Freedom of Expression
COMEDY AS FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION Paul Sturges Dept of Information Science Loughborough University Published in Journal of Documentation 66(2) 2010, 279-293. INTRODUCTION Information Science is a broad, inclusive disciplinary area. If rather than looking to define or delimit it, we look for its driving principle or ethical rationale a good choice would be Article 19 of the UN Universal Declaration on Human Rights. This is a powerful statement on intellectual freedom encompassing freedom of opinion, expression and access to information. Without the freedom to generate, organise, access and use information there would be very limited scope for information science. However, despite this, intellectual freedom issues have never been a substantial preoccupation of the information science literature: freedom has been taken as a given. An obvious reason for this is that in the past the bulk of information science literature has been generated in the USA, and northern Europe. In these parts of the world and historically related countries such as Canada, Australia and New Zealand, there has been such a long, and largely unquestioned tradition of free speech (Grayling, 2007) that the struggles to obtain and preserve intellectual freedom in other parts of the world can easily escape notice. In a globalised communications environment, intellectual freedom necessarily moves to the centre of professional attention and can then become explicitly, instead of implicitly, a central focus for academic study. The present article enters the area of intellectual freedom to examine freedom of expression (more traditionally, but rather unhelpfully, referred to as free speech): the aspect of intellectual freedom that concerns the generation of information and the voicing of opinion.
