The new approaches reject the positivist and orthodox Marxist traditions that regard literature as a mimetic reflection of an underlying "reality," "internalist" histories that isolate the discipline from the surrounding culture, Hegelian, organicist, and teleological generalizations of periods and cultures, reductive national perspectives, and, last but not least, histories dominated by "grand narratives." But if there is a reasonable consensus on the critique of the past, new histories have been slow in coming and controversial when published. Witness the series that the International Comparative Literature Association (ICLA) has been preparing on the history of literature in the European languages, and the French literary history that Denis Hollier and his collaborators have published-both of which we shall discuss later in this paper. The following essay delineates the contours of an ongoing project on the history of the literary cultures in East-Central Europe, which will be published by John Benjamins Press in three volumes. -

In some sense, the goal of this dissertation is to account for both the effects of and development of this gap in disciplinary history and in the process of doing literary criticism. Yet, if there is any genre of academic writing that is a consistent exception to this rule, it is the acknowledgments: a place where a critic tracks her encounters with institutional life and the unforgettable, invaluable actions of mentors, colleagues, and friends. Such entries are always woefully partial. Still acknowledgments remain the thing that many compose as they walk to and from campus. To imagine the ways we can give thanks to those who made the work possible is to imagine the completion of the work. Without this act of gratitude, the work could not be. I began this project as an undergraduate in the Department of English at the University of Pennsylvania. Herman Beavers introduced me to the Southern Agrarians and encouraged me to pursue how that group’s ideas impacted their literature and the literary criticism they would come to develop. -

MODERN TRENDS IN LITERARY STUDIES IN FRANCE" EFORE I try to explain the character of and modern B tendencies in literary studies in France, I should like to say a word or two about the reasons that have prompted me to choose this subject for discussion tonight. This being essentially a group of professors of history in its various forms, of philosophy understood in the broad sense with which we are familiar in Europe, and of literature and the arts-a group that corresponds to our Faculte's des Lettres in France, I first thought that a subject deaIing with the very life of the Sorbonne or certain aspects of our Fac- ukhs ddes Lettres might be appropriate, But this would have led me to all sorts of administrative and personal matters that would have led you away from your normal scholarly pursuits. On the other hand I have very frequently deplored in meetings of scholars that the subject under discussion should be so narrow, so minute, so remote from the audience that it would seem at times that the reader of the paper is the only one to be interested in it (if he is), especially when he is unable to come to any general or sufficiently far-reaching conclusions. I am not trying to bring you anything very new toniglit. My subject will be broad and somewhat abstract. I felt it might be of some interest to a fairly large number of you, since in our literary studies in France we never forget their historical aspects, nor the links that, especially in the field of literature, bind the world of art and the world of thought. -

In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, such histories became popular, providing information about the lives, works, reception, and influ- ence of single authors, facts that were strung together chronologically in the form of long narratives that employed a limited number of available story lines, such as growth or decline, a golden age, a transitional period or a renaissance, lonely figures and literary movements, avant-garde and epigonal works, major and emergent voices, or currents and eddies coming together to form a main stream. Such reference works have been less often read than consulted by students who wanted to catch a quick glimpse of authors, works, movements, or periods in their historical contexts. -

Abstract: Fernand Baldensperger (1871-1958) was a literary scholar, author (under the pseudonym Fernand Baldenne), and professor who contributed greatly to the field of Comparative Literature. In addition to teaching at the Universities of Nancy (1884-1900), Lyon (1900-1910), and Paris (1910-1935) in France, he taught at Columbia University (1917-1919), the University of Strasbourg (1919-1923), Harvard University (1935-1940), and the University of California-Los Angeles (1940-1945). Baldensperger cofounded the Revue de littérature comparée, and he wrote numerous scholarly texts on Goethe, Balzac, Alfred de Vigny, and various French and comparative literary topics. The collection consists of scholarly and World War II-related print and manuscript materials, as well as correspondence. French Global: A New Approach to Literary History is a remarkably innovative and insightful volume of twenty-nine essays that aims to “world” French literature from the Middle Ages to the present, that is, to read it from a perspective that underscores negotiations with otherness and boundary crossings both within and beyond France’s borders. French Global is not exhaustive—nor does it intend to be—but instead offers a roadmap for readers to explore the tensions between multiplicity and unity, diversity and universality, “same” and “other” that underlie every period of French literature, including some of its most canonical texts. French Global challenges the idea of an unproblematic unity between French as language, French as literature, and French as nation, a notion that structured the earliest French literary histories, notably Jean-Marie Napoléon Désiré Nisard’s Histoire de la littérature française [1] and Gustave Lanson’s Histoire de la littérature française.[2] Instead, the essays in French Global examine and underscore the multiple points of contact that found and inform French literary space, a space created by individuals with diverse origins, concerns, and allegiances both inside and outside of France. -

From Aesthetics to Politics in the Dreyfus Affair Roderick Cooke Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Gaduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2014 © 2013 Roderick Cooke All rights reserved ABSTRACT From Aesthetics to Politics in the Dreyfus Affair Roderick Cooke This dissertation proposes a new interpretation for the political engagement of French writers in the Dreyfus Affair between 1897 and 1900. I argue that aesthetics has been undervalued by past scholarship on this question, and analyze the engagement of four very different writers - Emile Zola, Ferdinand Brunetière, Henry Céard and Saint-Georges de Bouhélier - demonstrating that, in each case, their prior aesthetic thought was a vital part of their political discourse on the Affair. This claim involves a rethinking of the relationship between aesthetics and politics as it has usually been conceived, with the aesthetic no longer a reflection of the political, but rather a potential source for it. For each of the writers studied, his literary criticism and theory (dating as far back as the 1860s) are put in dialogue with his writing about the Dreyfus Affair itself through close readings of both corpuses. In each case, attention is paid to the continuities and inversions of central ideas such as individualism, truth, and the Republic, in order to illustrate their structural role in the intellectual world of the fin de siècle. As a result, I have termed the four chapters 'micro-histories of ideas' to convey the way in which individual concerns provide a window onto the major battles of ideas in the France of the early Third Republic. -

Rethinking the Center-Periphery Nexus in the Early Modern Period: The Paris-Province Relation in Pierre de Villiers' Entretiens sur les contes de fées (1699) Oded Rabinovitch Harvard University Introduction This article examines the Paris-province relation in the early modern period insofar as it relates to the world of letters. Historians often consider these relations in the context of a narrative that I call "the plight of the provinces." In it, the provinces enjoyed but pale imitations of the cultural life of the capital at least since the second half of the seventeenth century.1 Daniel Roche and L. W. B. Theory of Literature Rene Wellek and Austin Warren (Harcourt, Brace and Company, 1948) Ritika Batabyal1 The 1944-46 collaboration between Rene Wellek and Austin Warren led to the publication of one of the most influential and comprehensive analysis in the field of literary theory, methodology and criticism. Their urge to provide an “organon” of method resulted in the coming of shape of Theory of Literature. Harcourt, Brace and Company first published the book in December 1948. In the Preface to the third edition of the book, it has been remarked that the book has been translated into Spanish, Italian, Japanese, Korean, German, Portuguese, Hebrew and Gujarati. This explicitly evinces the impact of the book in 20th century literary scenario. Theory of literature is considered to be the first work to systematize literary theory. Though Wellek and Warren came from different backgrounds and training they believed that literary scholarship and criticism are compatible and literary study over all other things needs to be specifically literary. The book is divided into four sections encompassing a wide range of subjects. The first part deals with definitions and distinctions. Here Wellek and Warren delve with the nature and function of literature, and there is a constant endeavour to distinguish between literature and literary study. In this section the book also deals with literary theory, history and criticism and it tries to show that these are inter dependent and cannot be put into watertight compartments. The final chapter in this section tries to give a definition of General Literature, Comparative Literature and National Literature and in the process it lays down the major characteristics of General, Comparative, and National Literature.
