Il fait valoir que le discours proverbial de Kourouma traduit la vision cosmologique des personnages romanesques dans cinq domaines, à savoir la religion, la culture matérielle, les animaux, le temps et la femme. Contrairement aux études publiées au cours des quarante dernières années qui traitent de certains de ces domaines sans véritablement privilégier le proverbe comme objet d’analyse, ou qui l’analysent trop rapidement chez Kourouma en utilisant de très minces corpus ou une approche peu efficace et non contextuelle, ce travail, lui, déconstruit le proverbe et fait ressortir ses dimensions esthétiques, discursives et idéologiques les plus variées et les plus significatives. La thèse se sert des approches syncrétique, fonctionnelle et intertextuelle pour examiner les proverbes comme discours religieux. Dans le but d’explorer les proverbes portant sur la culture matérielle, l’étude adopte les concepts du symbolisme, de filiation, de territorialité ainsi que les notions de la hiérarchie des métaux et d’extra-textualité. Le travail aborde les proverbes animaliers en ayant recours aux concepts de métaphore, du symbolisme et du contractualisme. Quant à l’expression temporelle des proverbes, elle est approchée dans une perspective culturelle ii et spatio-temporelle alors que le rapport du proverbe au genre féminin est déterminé à partir d’une analyse culturelle et sociale de son statut. Cette approche d’une étude multidimensionnelle du proverbe permet ici de déterminer le caractère biculturel, bispirituel, pragmatique, opportuniste et utilitariste de la foi religieuse des personnages kouroumiens. Elle montre en outre que les objets de la culture matérielle sont porteurs de significations sociales, culturelles, littéraires et environnementales. Grâce à son cadre conceptuel élargi et diversifié, ce travail permet également de constater que les animaux possèdent des identités distinctives et remplissent des fonctions romanesque, spirituelle, sanitaire et alimentaire. La thèse met enfin en évidence le caractère pluraliste du temps existentiel, et établit que la condition de la femme est fortement influencée par des facteurs naturels et socioculturels. De ses résultats, l’étude tire la conclusion que le proverbe permet à Kourouma de proposer sa lecture du monde et sa théorie de l’écriture romanesque. iii Remerciements Le présent travail de recherche n’aurait pu aboutir sans le concours d’un certain nombre de personnes et institutions que je tiens ici à remercier. Liter- ary theory then had its hour of glory, as if the faith of the convert had suddenly allowed it to catch up with nearly a century of foot-dragging in a split second. French literary studies were unfamiliar with Russian for- malism, the Prague circle, and Anglo-American New Criticism, to say nothing of the stylistics of Leo Spitzer, the topology of Ernst Robert Curtius, the antipositivism of Benedetto Croce, Gianfranco Contini’s crit- icism of variants, the Geneva school and the critique of consciousness, or even with the deliberate antitheory of F. R. Leavis and his Cambridge disciples. Weighed in the balance against all these original and influential movements that occupied the first half of the twentieth century in Europe and North America, the French had only Valéry’s “Poétique” [poetics]—the title of the chair he occupied at the Collège de France (1936) and an ephemeral discipline whose progress was soon interrupted by the war, and then by Valéry’s death—and perhaps the ever-enigmatic Fleurs de Tarbes by Jean Paulhan (1941).

The new approaches reject the positivist and orthodox Marxist traditions that regard literature as a mimetic reflection of an underlying "reality," "internalist" histories that isolate the discipline from the surrounding culture, Hegelian, organicist, and teleological generalizations of periods and cultures, reductive national perspectives, and, last but not least, histories dominated by "grand narratives." But if there is a reasonable consensus on the critique of the past, new histories have been slow in coming and controversial when published. Witness the series that the International Comparative Literature Association (ICLA) has been preparing on the history of literature in the European languages, and the French literary history that Denis Hollier and his collaborators have published-both of which we shall discuss later in this paper. The following essay delineates the contours of an ongoing project on the history of the literary cultures in East-Central Europe, which will be published by John Benjamins Press in three volumes.

    MODERN TRENDS IN LITERARY STUDIES IN FRANCE" EFORE I try to explain the character of and modern B tendencies in literary studies in France, I should like to say a word or two about the reasons that have prompted me to choose this subject for discussion tonight. This being essentially a group of professors of history in its various forms, of philosophy understood in the broad sense with which we are familiar in Europe, and of literature and the arts-a group that corresponds to our Faculte's des Lettres in France, I first thought that a subject deaIing with the very life of the Sorbonne or certain aspects of our Fac- ukhs ddes Lettres might be appropriate, But this would have led me to all sorts of administrative and personal matters that would have led you away from your normal scholarly pursuits. On the other hand I have very frequently deplored in meetings of scholars that the subject under discussion should be so narrow, so minute, so remote from the audience that it would seem at times that the reader of the paper is the only one to be interested in it (if he is), especially when he is unable to come to any general or sufficiently far-reaching conclusions. I am not trying to bring you anything very new toniglit. My subject will be broad and somewhat abstract. I felt it might be of some interest to a fairly large number of you, since in our literary studies in France we never forget their historical aspects, nor the links that, especially in the field of literature, bind the world of art and the world of thought.

French Global: A New Approach to Literary History is a remarkably innovative and insightful volume of twenty-nine essays that aims to “world” French literature from the Middle Ages to the present, that is, to read it from a perspective that underscores negotiations with otherness and boundary crossings both within and beyond France’s borders. French Global is not exhaustive—nor does it intend to be—but instead offers a roadmap for readers to explore the tensions between multiplicity and unity, diversity and universality, “same” and “other” that underlie every period of French literature, including some of its most canonical texts.     From Aesthetics to Politics in the Dreyfus Affair Roderick Cooke Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Gaduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2014 © 2013 Roderick Cooke All rights reserved ABSTRACT From Aesthetics to Politics in the Dreyfus Affair Roderick Cooke This dissertation proposes a new interpretation for the political engagement of French writers in the Dreyfus Affair between 1897 and 1900. I argue that aesthetics has been undervalued by past scholarship on this question, and analyze the engagement of four very different writers - Emile Zola, Ferdinand Brunetière, Henry Céard and Saint-Georges de Bouhélier - demonstrating that, in each case, their prior aesthetic thought was a vital part of their political discourse on the Affair. This claim involves a rethinking of the relationship between aesthetics and politics as it has usually been conceived, with the aesthetic no longer a reflection of the political, but rather a potential source for it. For each of the writers studied, his literary criticism and theory (dating as far back as the 1860s) are put in dialogue with his writing about the Dreyfus Affair itself through close readings of both corpuses. In each case, attention is paid to the continuities and inversions of central ideas such as individualism, truth, and the Republic, in order to illustrate their structural role in the intellectual world of the fin de siècle. As a result, I have termed the four chapters 'micro-histories of ideas' to convey the way in which individual concerns provide a window onto the major battles of ideas in the France of the early Third Republic.

    Rethinking the Center-Periphery Nexus in the Early Modern Period: The Paris-Province Relation in Pierre de Villiers' Entretiens sur les contes de fées (1699) Oded Rabinovitch Harvard University Introduction This article examines the Paris-province relation in the early modern period insofar as it relates to the world of letters. Historians often consider these relations in the context of a narrative that I call "the plight of the provinces." In it, the provinces enjoyed but pale imitations of the cultural life of the capital at least since the second half of the seventeenth century.1 Daniel Roche and L. W. B. To the French this assertion appears remarkably erroneous. For it is first in Great Britain, with Izaak Walton and John Aubrey, then in the eighteenth century, with Samuel Johnson and his biographer James Boswell, that biography received its lettres de noblesse. French lit- erature has hardly any canonical biographies or biographers comparable with these. Perhaps Protestantism played a historical role in this respect, with the relatively greater importance it gives to the individual, and a tendency to scrutinize each indi- vidual life, looking for signs of grace. In the nineteenth century, Thomas Carlyle, developing a vision of history centered on the cult of Great Men in On Heroes and Hero Worship, could declare that “The History of the world is but the Biography of great men” (39), and in America his disciple Ralph Waldo Emerson, the thinker of Transcendentalism that he himself described as an Americanization of German Idealism, and the author of Representative Men, insisted that “There is properly no history, only biography” (15). In France, this was the tradition of Gustave Lanson, Ferdinand Brunetière, Hippolyte Taine, and most of all Charles-Augustin Sainte- Beuve,1 who based literary science on the study of the biography of writers.
