Ensete ventricosum is a traditional multipurpose crop mainly used as a staple/co-staple food for over 20 million people in Ethiopia. Despite this, scientific information about the crop is scarce. (ree types of food, viz., Kocho (fermented product from scraped pseudostem and grated corm), Bulla (dehydrated juice), and Amicho (boiled corm) can be prepared from enset. (ese products are particularly rich in carbohydrates, minerals, fibres, and phenolics, but poor in proteins. Such meals are usually served with meat and cheese to supplement proteins. As a food crop, it has useful attributes such as foods can be stored for long time, grows in wide range of environments, produces high yield per unit area, and tolerates drought. It has an irreplaceable role as a feed for animals. Enset starch is found to have higher or comparable quality to potato and maize starch and widely used as a tablet binder and disintegrant and also in pharmaceutical gelling, drug loading, and release processes. -

Sexy Pink and Sexy Scarlet from ovaries sections. The expe- riment tested combinations between IAA (0; 1 and 2 mg L-1) and 2.4-D (0; 5; 10; 15 and 20 mg L-1) in the cultivars Sexy Pink and Sexy Scarlet. The cultivar Sexy Pink presented a higher frequency of callus development as compared to Sexy Scarlet. In the treatments A1D10 (1mg L-1 of IAA and 10mg L-1 of 2.4-D) and A2D5 (2 mg L-1 of IAA and 5mg L-1 of 2.4-D), the callus frequency of formation of the cultivar Sexy Pink corresponded to 100% of the inoculated explants, showing that the IAA associa- ted with the 2.4-D induced a satisfactory callus formation response in the studied cultivar. -

A new Orchidantha species from Endau-Rompin National Park (Johor, Peninsular Malaysia), O. lengguanii Škorničk., is described and illustrated. It is compared to its morphologically most similar species Orchidantha maxillarioides (Ridl.) K.Schum., which is also illustrated. A lectotype and epitype for Orchidantha maxillarioides are also designated here. Keywords. Epitype, Johor, lectotype, Lowia, Orchidantha maxillarioides, Protamomum, Sungai Selai, typification Introduction The Lowiaceae, with a single genus Orchidantha, is one of three small families in the Zingiberales. The entire family was last revised by Holttum (1970) who recognised six species. Since then there have been numerous additions, mainly from Borneo (Nagamasu & Sakai, 1999; Pedersen, 2001) but also from Thailand (Jentjittikul & Larsen, 2002) and Vietnam. Currently 20 species are recognised, including two recent additions from Vietnam, Orchidantha stercorea (Trần & Leong-Škorničková, 2010) and O. virosa (Leong-Škorničková et al., in press). Some of the more recent works include a more detailed introduction to the genus and this information is not repeated here. Four species are currently known to occur in Peninsular Malaysia: Orchidantha longiflora (Scort.) Ridl. (Scortechini, 1886; Ridley, 1924), O. maxillarioides (Ridl.) K.Schum. (Ridley, 1893; Schumann, 1900), O. fimbriata Holttum (Holttum, 1970), and O. siamensis Larsen (Larsen, 1961). Orchidantha calcarea Henderson (1933) is currently recognised as a heterotypic synonym of O. longiflora. In August 2002, Dr Saw Leng Guan and his team (FRIM) encountered an interesting Orchidantha during the ‘Second Scientific Expedition 2002’ to the Sungai Selai area of Endau-Rompin National Park.
