  • GAP BODHI TARU- Open Access Journal of Humanities
Volume: I, Issue: 2 ISSN: 2581-5857 An International Peer-Reviewed GAP BODHI TARU- Open Access Journal of Humanities TRADITION OF DISSENT IN SUB-CONTINENTAL FILMS: A READING OF MANISH JHA’S MATRUBHOOMI -A NATION WITHOUT WOMEN AND SHOAIB MANSOOR’S BOL Bhavin Purohit Associate Professor, English PRB Arts & PGR Commerce College, Bardoli E-mail : [email protected] ABSTRACT Cinema is one of the most revolutionary art forms today. Locally and globally film as an art form is being used to provoke, agitate, ask questions and generate new politicized communities. Experimental films in India and Pakistan have contested political, social and cultural status quo. Socially, culturally and politically marginalized groups across the globe have found adequate place in film narratives. The ulterior aim of the depiction of different categories of subalternity in films is to expand the idea of ‘art for life’s sake’. Indian film director Manish Jha’s Matrubhoomi- a Nation without Women (2005) and Pakistani film director Shoaib Mansoor’s Bol (2011) depict women issues of two different religions of two different countries. Matrubhoomi is a film based on the issue of female infanticide and female foeticide in a country like India and its effects on gender balance and the recurring social anarchy it creates. Matrubhoomi’s female protagonist Kalki is the last surviving woman who reminding of Draupadi of the Mahabharata undergoes tremendous sexual oppression within family at the hands of male family members who operate as arch patriarchs for her. The film depicts the horrors of life without woman. The narrative of Bol is based in the heart of Lahore and is placed in a house full of daughters.

  • Justice Qayyum's Report
PART I BACKGROUND TO INQUIRY 1. Cricket has always put itself forth as a gentleman’s game. However, this aspect of the game has come under strain time and again, sadly with increasing regularity. From BodyLine to Trevor Chappel bowling under-arm, from sledging to ball tampering, instances of gamesmanship have been on the rise. Instances of sportsmanship like Courtney Walsh refusing to run out a Pakistani batsman for backing up too soon in a crucial match of the 1987 World Cup; Imran Khan, as Captain calling back his counterpart Kris Srikanth to bat again after the latter was annoyed with the decision of the umpire; batsmen like Majid Khan walking if they knew they were out; are becoming rarer yet. Now, with the massive influx of money and sheer increase in number of matches played, cricket has become big business. Now like other sports before it (Baseball (the Chicago ‘Black-Sox’ against the Cincinnati Reds in the 1919 World Series), Football (allegations against Bruce Grobelar; lights going out at the Valley, home of Charlton Football club)) Cricket Inquiry Report Page 1 Cricket faces the threat of match-fixing, the most serious threat the game has faced in its life. 2. Match-fixing is an international threat. It is quite possibly an international reality too. Donald Topley, a former county cricketer, wrote in the Sunday Mirror in 1994 that in a county match between Essex and Lancashire in 1991 Season, both the teams were heavily paid to fix the match. Time and again, former and present cricketers (e.g. Manoj Prabhakar going into pre-mature retirement and alleging match-fixing against the Indian team; the Indian Team refusing to play against Pakistan at Sharjah after their loss in the Wills Trophy 1991 claiming matches there were fixed) accused different teams of match-fixing.

  • Zaman, in His Headquarters Near the Frontier. Col. Shams Said There Were
401 Zaman, in his headquarters near the frontier. Col. Shams said there were frequent mortar exchanges with the Indian troops over the border-always, he said, begun by the Indians. "They certainly need us here to defends them," he said. "These Bengalis don't know how to fight. Now, I come from the North- West Frontier, where fighting is in our blood. I have been using a rifle since I was ten. We've got guts. CoL. Shams directed the military operations of the past three months in this area, beginning with the "securing" of Khulna town during the period March 25-29. He told me that it was only in the past month that his troops had been able to get the upper hand all over the district from "miscreants and rebels". It appears that it was Shams who began the system of razakars by the distributing police rifles to civilians in Khulna-"good chaps, good Muslims and loyal Pakistanis" he explained. There are now, according to the military authorities, 5,000 razakars in East Pakistan, 300 of them in Khulna district. They are paid Rs 3 a day (25 pence at the official rate) and receive seven days' training which appears to consist entirely of learning how to shoot a police Lee Enfield rifle. Their work consists of "security checks'-guiding the West Pakistan troops to the homes of supporters of the Awami League. They are supposed to be under the orders of local "peace committees" which are selected by the military authorities on a similar basis of "loyalty to Pakistan".

Ciputat, Mei 2011 Hani Taqiyya ABSTRAK Hani Taqiyya Analisis Semiotik Terhadap Film In The Name of God Pasca kejadian Serangan 11 September 2001 lalu, wajah dunia Islam kian menjadi sorotan.
