It Is our pleasure presenting these superb young artists and bringing chamber music to Bouton during the -mer months. ************************************** THE The Shuahai Qautet was formed in 1983 at the Shanghai Conservatory. After gaining national recognition in competitions and performances throughout , they were selected to represent their country at the Portsmouth International Competition where they were awarded Second Prize. Subsequently, the quartet left China to continue their studies with the in the . They also studied with the at the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival, and this summer were chosen to be the resident fellowship quartet at the Tanglewood Music Center. The quartet received First Prize in the Discovery Competition (1987) held by the Chamber Music Society of Chicago and were prize wiMers at the First Paolo Borciani International String Quartet Competition (1987). Most recently they were invited to perform with Young Uck Kim and Yo-Yo Ma at the Mostly Mozart Series in . For the 1987-1988 season, they have been named as the resident graduate quartet at the , where they will study with and serve as teaching assistants to the . Upon their March 2, 1987 New York debut at Town Hall, the Shanghai Quartet were hailed as "among the finest young foursomes of the day" (John Rockwell, N.Y. Times). BIOGRAPHIES Wel1u1 LI began violin studies with his father Ke-Qiang Li at the age of five . He attended the Music Middle School at Shanghai Conservatory, and graduated from the Conservatory in 1985 . In 1981 he studied with Isadore Tinkleman at the San Francisco Conservatory through an exchange program be­ tween the sister cities of San Francisco and Shanghai. He has been a soloist with the Shanghai Conservatory Orchestra, the Shanghai Symphony and the BBC Symphony Orchestra. In 1982 he was invited to perform with the BBC Scottish Orchestra, a concert which was recorded for broadcast. Mr. Li was featured in the film "From Mao to Mozart" with . Honaang LI began his violin studies at the same time as his brother. When the Beijing Conservatory reopened in 1977 after the Cultural Revolution, Mr. Li was selected from a group of over five hundred applicants. He continued his training at the Shanghai Conservatory and remained there as a teaching assis­ tant after his graduation in 1985. His teachers were Ke-Qiang Li and Li-Na Yu. Mr. Li has appeared as a soloist with the Shanghai Philharmonic and the Shanghai Conservatory Orchestra. Violinist Zlten1 Wan1 was born in Shanghai in 1960, the son of professional musicians. He began violin studies with his mother at the age of ten, and changed to viola at the age of sixteen. He was a member of the Nanking Opera Orchestra until he entered the Shanghai Conservatory in 1981 as a student of Xi-Di Shen. Mr. Wang has been a soloist with the Shanghai Conservatory Orchestra, and has participated in master classes of violists John Graham and Milton Katims during their visits to China. The newest member of the quartet is cellist Kathe Jarka. A graduate of the Juilliard School of Music, she was a scholarship student of and Channing Robbins. She has continued her studies with Raya Garbousova and William Pleeth as a Fulbright Scholar in London.
