R R R L L L L L L C C C FIVE MINUTES WITH YOU Brighton & Hove Council elections on May 2nd will be hard fought. The results are guaranteed to be very close. That means our LGBT+ votes are more important than ever. How do the three main parties stand on our issues? Stephen Wrench met the three party leaders, Tony Janio, for the Conservatives, Daniel Yates for Labour and Phélim Mac Cafferty for the Greens to give them the five-minute test. In separate interviews, each politician answered the same LGBT+ questions, with a strict overall time limit. Their answers, given with a stopwatch in front of them, are reproduced here unedited.

) Why should we, in the LGBT+ Phélim Mac Cafferty, Green: Thank you for Commissioner, has, has finally got to the communities, vote for councillors from your the question. Um, I think first of all what we finances within the, um, the police budget party in the upcoming council elections in have to acknowledge is that we’ve had, we’ll and she’s now increasing police numbers again ? celebrate 50 years since the Stonewall Riots and she’s guaranteed that there will be this summer, um, and, er, in those 50 years uniformed officers which is good. And from Daniel Yates, Labour: Well I’m hoping that there’s been an awful lot of progress, er, and a the Council, I think you saw, um, at Budget people will be voting for Labour councillors whole lot of that is down to dedicated Council last week that the the Conservatives because of their record in administration on campaigning from communities, umm, and can be trusted to start cutting the the City Council over the last four years, also from campaigners and the reason why, er, bureaucracy within the Council and the their previous record as councillors on the City voters, er, and readers of Gscene need to vote unnecessary posts and getting people into the Council over decades and especially for Labour’s for us is because we stand with a very clear front line. Over the last few years we’ve record when it was in government as well. You firm commitment as to what we’re going to do supported the Youth Service, in fact the last know, Labour’s got a very strong track record of for LGBT people and we have seven key areas, couple of years not, not this year but the supporting LGBT rights, we’ve got a very strong er, that we want to outline in terms of the previous two years you could almost say we record here of, of supporting services that are work that we want to do in the next four saved the Youth Service, certainly in specific to LGBT community and communities, years. But the top three I would say are to do Knoll, the Hangleton Knoll Project or services that are just simply providing a with sexual health, to do with the impact of (Interviewer’s note: this charity works with decent level of services to people who may or cuts in the City and to do with safety. On young people considered to be at risk of anti- may not be LGBT across the City. So we’ve put sexual health, um, we reversed the cuts on social behaviour), er, I consider that to be one a lot of money in, we made some very clear sexual health services this year, we want to of the most vital things that I do, is to promises at the last set of elections about what protect HIV budgets and ensure sexual health support the Hangleton Knoll Project, and they we would do for the LGBT communities especially services are prioritised as the City has an are taking the next generation through and working around dealing with hate crime, escalating need, we want to work on driving they, they’re very inclusive and they’re taking making sure that we made services inclusive, down rates of STIs and we also want to work people into the new, er, if you like the new making sure that we made services attentive for the PreP, ah, to be routinely available from millennium if, and I, I just think that the and appropriate to the LGBT community. I sexual health clinics. Um, on cuts, we know Conservatives are the party that, that you can think, I think we’ve delivered on those. that cuts have deeply affected the community, trust to, to put the money where it’s going to Tony Janio, Conservative: I think what you’ll we know that one in two LGBT people have be most effective, that’s what I’m sort of find is the Conservatives at the moment are the depression and we want to help voluntary and saying, it’s, its not going to be on most inclusive of parties - it, it - you probably community organisations, um, access, um, bureaucracy, it’s not going to be wasted it’s wouldn’t have asked that question 30 years resource and in-kind support from the council. going to be good, um, money directed to th e ago, you would’ve made an assumption that we right things. ) Are we safe, those of us who identify as weren’t, but I think nowadays in Brighton and LGBT+ in our City, with rising hate crimes Phélim Mac Cafferty, Green: Um, I think Hove we’re probably the most diverse bunch and falling police numbers? we’re less safe now than we were at the start that you, you’ll ever meet so I think that’s the of austerity and one of the key things that we reason to vote Conservative is we go right Tony Janio, Conservative: Safe is, I must want to be doing, ah, as we go forward, if you across the whole spectrum, er, and people, admit safe is a, is a strange word nowadays roll back to 2017 we reversed the cut to the people can trust us that we, we pick people on because it can be interpreted many ways. If LGBT community safety officer through that merit and not because of anything else. So you’re talking about physical safety, yes I budget and that was because we could see we’ve got the right councillors for the right think you can. One of the good things is Katy from the results of the Brexit referendum that jobs in the right places. Bourne, who’s the Police and Crime GSCENE 25 there’d been a massive mushroom in the question you should be asking nowadays? I ) Final words. You have a minute to quantity of hate crimes. I’ve got the figures think in society, the one thing I’m keen is, is convince us. here: they went from 49 to 64 crimes and that everybody should be equal, um, whether, Tony Janio, Conservative: For voting incidents across the City, that was why we whether you’re female candidates, gay Conservative? I, I think the, the, certainly if then defended the LGBT community safety candidates, er, it, it, the days in this City you look back the Conservatives have got a, a post and it’s why as we go forward we want to where you have to ask is over and I think bad press with the LGBQT community over the work with the Sussex Police, the LGBT that’s to be applauded. years, I think that certainly in this City has Community Safety Forum and others on ) After five years with you in charge how gone. We have got a, a series of candidates and campaigning to make homophobic, transphobic will things be better for us, by us I mean indeed councillors from all different races, and bi-phobic hate crimes an aggravated the LGBT+ communities? sexes, er, genders and if you look forward, you offence to put them on the same par as faith should look forward to a Council that is run by and, er, religious-motivated hate crimes. Daniel Yates, Labour: I hope there’ll be a the Conservatives that is inclusive, it’s, it’s range of things that make a difference to the Daniel Yates, Labour: I’m not happy about even-handed, it’s, as I say, meritocratic, it puts community. Firstly I want the community to falling police numbers obviously and I know, I people first, it doesn’t put politics, I think the feel that it’s safer, safer, and to feel happier know a lot of people in a lot of parts of the saying is it puts people before politics and I with its place and its standing in the City. I City, including around St James’s Street, are think we do a lot of that. We, we believe in think the LGBT community has always had a very unhappy with how safe they feel in our people, we believe in education, we’re driving very strong reputation for being able to speak community but when you look at the figures the digital technologies in this City, I mean I’m out and feeling that it’s able to make the case overall across the City, many people feel safe a scientist myself and I believe that, er, for the changes that it’s needed in the City. I in their community during daytime, many of through, through all these new innovative think sometimes the City Council and other them also feel safe in their community at techniques that everybody can thrive and the, services haven’t necessarily been as responsive nighttimes too. But one single person going the question of LGBTQ, I think in five years, if or as quick to deal with things. We’re taking out and feeling unnerved or unsafe or I’ve got to the state where the question doesn’t action, as I’ve said, on a, on a number of experiencing any form of hatred whether it’s a need to be asked, then I will have run a specific issues, we’re a, we’re a world leader on hate crime or whether it’s, you know sort of, successful Council. many of those issues including if you look at something that’s relatively just unnerving, things like trans rights, you know sort of, and Phélim Mac Cafferty, Green: (Chuckles) Okay, that’s unacceptable. We have to do more, gender identity. What I would like to think in um, I think at this election we have seen a there’s always more that we can do. What we five years is that people who identify as LGBT+ divided Labour Party, we’ve seen a national need to be doing is putting in the extra actually feel that this is a City that not just Conservative Party, um, that has brought us to resources in, that’s why we as a Labour welcomes them, but that actually values them the dire straits of Brexit, um, I think we administration want to get those extra and that recognises that they are an integral represent something fresh and, er, something resources in to dealing with hate crime, to part of the City life, of the City’s future as well that, er, Gscene readers can get behind. Um, we dealing with improving neighbourhoods and as of the City’s past. stand for recognition of all the different parts communities. of the LGBT community, we want to include Tony Janio, Conservative: Wow, that, that’s a ) How many LGBT+ candidates are you older LGBT people in the work of the Council as good question. And I think, what, the one running in this election? we go forward, we want to support, um, thing you can say from us is that, that we community and voluntary organisations, we Phélim Mac Cafferty, Green: Off the top of my tend to base our lives around merit, um, we want to, ah, make sure that, ah, the Street head, I believe we have four? Um, I could have obviously have to have a safety net from, from Party at Pride has a vibrant future, we voted for got that wrong because not all of our people who can’t succeed for what reason, but more of that last week. Um, we want to win candidates are yet in place, um, but, but as I think that meritocracy is the way to go. back events like Student Pride and we want to usual we, we put a, a real importance on Some Conservatives don’t believe in that word work with Pride and Trans Pride on bringing, having LGBT people standing to represent the of course because it comes from, er, maybe the turning both events plastic-free into the future. community, um, and I think that, that, they’ll left but with a meritocracy if you’re the right come from all sorts of different backgrounds as person in the right job at the right time you’ll Daniel Yates, Labour: I don’t think it takes a well. I’m slightly older, we’ll have slightly succeed, if you’re the right person with the minute to convince people does it? I think it younger, we’ll have women, er, we’ll have men, right attitude at the right time you’ll succeed, takes a lifetime to convince people. I think we’ll, um, we’ll have a real mix of candidates. if you’re the right person with the right anything that I said in one minute is impossible attitude who can, who can give something to changing people minds if they’ve got a Daniel Yates, Labour: I can’t actually tell you society then society gives back to you and viewpoint about, you know sort of, the hatred at the moment, I can tell you we’ve got that’s what the Conservatives believe in, so I or the bigotry or the, or the lack of respect that several out candidates. I can tell you we’ve think in five years’ time, the Council will be they’ve been treated with over the, over the had several out councillors in the last well run, it will be efficiently run and it gives generations or over decades. I think what’s administration too. We’re actually conducting a you the, it’ll give this City the infrastructure important for me to remind people is that survey now, we’re just, it just came through that everybody can be happy here. Labour’s the party that really started making a into my inbox yesterday, of all of our push on LGBT rights, Labour’s the party that candidates to see how they identify, because Phélim Mac Cafferty, Green: Um, I think a decriminalised homosexuality (Interviewer’s one of the things that we don’t try to do is to number of the key ways in which our presence note: the partial decriminalisation of 1967 was discriminate either for or against candidates would be felt would be building on things through a private Labour member’s bill rather on the basis of their sexuality or any, or any of we’ve done in the past, um, we worked, for than from the Labour government itself), that their other protected characteristics, but what example, we won the national Stonewall repealed Section 28. Labour’s the party that’s we do want to know is to understand how Education Awards, we won Top Local Authority, pushing forward for the next set of issues that broadly representative our candidates are of, er, for, for LGBT work. We launched the Trans we need to be dealing with across the city and of all of the communities in the City. Tool Kit, I chaired the Trans Equality Scrutiny across the country. (Gscene: “20 seconds, if you Report which has brought out a whole load of Tony Janio, Conservative: Um, I could take a want to add anything else, or are you happy?”). different, important findings. Um, I think if guess but I don’t know because I don’t ask, I think I’m more than happy, I’m more than you look at what we did previously, that would um, it’s not something I concern myself about. happy with our record and I’m more than happy be very much a mark of what we would do in I try to make sure that we have a sweep of all however people choose to vote, I just want the future as well. types of candidates but really, um, is that the them to get out there and vote. ) MAURICE (BFI blu-ray). The Merchant/Ivory adaptation of EM Forster ’s novel of gay love is, in its own way, quietly radical. For most of cinema’s history homosexual desire never really ended well yet it’s an Edwardian novel which suggests that there can, just possibly, be a happy ending. The film made a star out of Hugh Grant , but the film is packed with absolutely stirling performances. James Wilby as Maurice is perfect as the young man finding his true nature just as Grant manages to lose his. The supporting roles are also perfectly realised from Barry Foster ’s strait-laced Dean to Denholm Elliot ’s almost terrifying friend of the family. Remember in olden times trying to pause the Rupert Graves naked scene on the VHS copy you kept under your bed? I can report blu-ray gives infinitely better results. The two-disc set's extras include interviews with Ivory, Grant, Wilby plus deleted scenes and a fascinating commentary by Professor Claire Monk .
