In a city never shy of hosting a festival and striving to promote and celebrate the value that people aged 50+ bring to our unique city, the OPF presents an eclectic series of events and festivities. The theme of this year’s Festival is Ageing Well and looks towards the positives of being aged 50+. It provides a wonderful range of ways to have a great time, meet like-minded people and learn something new. It proves that if you are looking forward to Ageing Well, then Brighton and Hove is the place to be. 4 THIS YEAR'S THEME FROM BRIGHTON & HOVE CITY COUNCIL The theme of this year’s Festival is Ageing Well. The number of people aged 50+ is increasing year on year which is something we should celebrate and ensure our City caters for. We want to challenge assumptions that people should slow down as they reach a certain age, whilst some may want to do this, many do not, and many want to make full use of the opportunities that being older and wiser can bring. Our belief is that aging well is about quality and quantity and in adding life to the years as well as years to life. Getting out and about, meeting like-minded people and taking part in activities or pursuing an interest all support health and wellbeing and this year’s OPF brings over 100 opportunities to do this. Last year over 4,000 people aged 50+ took part in the Festival and we hope even more will get involved this year. Whilst taking part in the Festival may be a one off experience it may also be the starting point of a new interest, a boost to your social life or a regular activity. Turn the pages and see what inspires you. OPF.ORG.UK olderpeoplesfestival @OPF2018 @OPF2018 5 MAIN SPONSOR Brighton & Hove Older People’s Festival 2018 is supported by a grant of £10,000 from Public Health at Brighton & Hove City Council In Brighton & Hove, as elsewhere in the country, our population of older people is increasing, and, whilst it’s true that increasing age can present challenges to our health, it’s also true that longer life is something for us all to celebrate. As a city we want to acknowledge and celebrate the contribution that older people can make through the sharing and promotion of their skills, knowledge and experiences. There are many opportunities in Brighton & Hove for older people to take part in community activities to improve their health; such as lunch clubs, volunteering, dance, singing, art, and keep fit classes. In many cases these activities will be planned, led and delivered by older people themselves. The annual Older People’s festival is a great opportunity to showcase many of these opportunities and for the whole city to come together to celebrate ageing well, and point the way towards a healthy, happy, and contented old age for all of us.
