  • Historical Portsmouth Number List
Historical Portsmouth Number List The RYA Portsmouth Yardstick Scheme is provided to enable clubs to allow boats of different classes to race against each other fairly. The RYA actively encourages clubs to adjust handicaps where classes are either under or over performing compared to the number being used. The Portsmouth Yardstick list combines the Portsmouth numbers with class configuration and the total number of races returned to the RYA in the annual return. This additional data has been provided to help clubs achieve the stated aims of the Portsmouth Yardstick system and make adjustments to Portsmouth Numbers where necessary. Clubs using the PN list should be aware that the list is based on the average performance of each boat across a variety of clubs and locations. The numbers in the PN list may not reflect the peak performance of each boat. Historical numbers are listed below and have been collated from the RYA's archive of PN lists. It should be remembered that the Portsmouth Yardstick number list has been through a number of changes and the numbers listed below have had conversion factors applied where needed. It should also be remembered that whilst all efforts are taken for PN's not to drift, relative performance of older boats may be quite different to modern classes. The numbers are given as a starting point to help clubs arrive at a fair number and if these numbers are used then they should be reviewed regularly. Users of the PY scheme are reminded that all Portsmouth Numbers published by the RYA should be regarded as a guide only.

  • Current Guidelines and Regulations for Whale
A REVIEW OF WHALE WATCH GUIDELINES AND REGULATIONS AROUND THE WORLD VERSION 2009 Carole Carlson Provincetown Center for Coastal Studies, Provincetown, MA. USA College of the Atlantic, Bar Harbour, Maine USA GUIDELINES FOR COMMERCIAL CETACEAN-WATCHING ACTIVITIES IN THE ACCOBAMS AREA Point 1 Scope of the Guidelines The ACCOBAMS Guidelines presented here address those cetacean-watching activities carried out for commercial purposes and subject to the jurisdiction of the Parties to ACCOBAMS. The Guidelines relate to all marine activities where funds are being generated from whale or dolphin watching and this may include research activities that have a commercial component 1. They are intended to serve as a framework for the development of more detailed guidelines by national and regional authorities 2 at a local level. The ACCOBAMS Guidelines should be used to identify what issues need to be addressed and how this may be appropriately done. Variations on this framework will be required to cater for different species 3, different geographical considerations and differences in other human activities within the area where whale watching is occurring or planned to occur. 1 This is one issue where the appropriate authorities should decide the scope of activities to be included within the guidelines. The options are a. All marine activities that include whale or dolphin watching as a means of raising funds, including all commercial and research activities; or b. All marine activities that include whale or dolphin watching as a means of raising funds, including all commercial activities but excluding primarily research activities, which should be separately licensed, perhaps by a special permit system.

  • The Trouble with Niceness: How a Preference for Pleasantry Sabotages Culturally Responsive Teacher Preparation
Journal of Language and Literacy Education Vol. 12 Issue 2—Fall 2016 The Trouble with Niceness: How a Preference for Pleasantry Sabotages Culturally Responsive Teacher Preparation Jeanne Dyches Bissonnette Abstract: Because few teacher education programs are truly rooted in the philosophical aims of multicultural and social justice education (Asher, 2007; Banks, 2008; Hayes & Juarez, 2012; Miller, 2014), many pre-service teachers (PSTs) remain unpracticed—and unable—to teach in culturally responsive ways (Sleeter, 2012). But what structures and forces bear the culpability for the long documented shortcomings of this preparation? And how can literacy teacher educators honor their commitment to preparing practitioners capable of teaching all children? Here, the author postulates the ways in which teacher education programs’ preference for niceness functions as an iteration of Whiteness that obstructs attempts to actualize culturally responsive teacher preparation, tending specifically to the complicity of audit culture, pre-service teachers, teacher educators, and curricula and instruction. In an effort to disrupt and ultimately dismantle the culture of niceness, the author offers successful approaches to training PSTs for teaching in culturally responsive ways, including displaying sociocultural vulnerability, modeling and creating opportunities for critical reflection, and collaborating alongside PSTs to craft a transformative curriculum. Keywords: culturally responsive pedagogy, teacher preparation Jeanne Dyches Bissonnette is an assistant professor of literacy education at Iowa State University where she researches secondary teacher education and social justice.
