ROLF BJOERLING Biography Tenor Rolf Bjoreling has sung in the finest opera houses and recital halls of Europe and the United States to great acclaim. He is Sweden's leading tenor in Italian Opera, and his performance with Birgit Nilsson in Turandot inspired Stockholm's critic to write "Rolf Bjoerling's tone was so rich and brilliant that we haven't heard the like since his triumph in II ). ) Trovatore. The aria 'Nessun Dorma' was a hit, comparable to Nilsson's staircase scene." (Dagens Nyheter) Mr. Bjoerling, son of the late Jussi Bjoerling, received much of his training in the United States, studying under Dimitri Onofrey in Chicago. While there, he was awarded the Metropolitan Opera Scholarship in the face of stiff competition from over a thousand candidates. His successful debut at the Gothenburg Opera as Pinkerton led to appearances in Carmen, La Boheme, Aida and many other leading roles. Recently, Mr. Bjoerling has sung with the Seattle Opera, the Memphis Opera, Symphony of the New World, and the Quebec Symphony. His 1976 Carnegie Hall recital brought more critical acclaim, "Rolf Bjoerlingnotonly bears a proud name, he has a fine, ringing tenor voice, and uses it well." (Byrqn Belt, Newhouse Newspapers) "Rolf Bjoerling both vocally and artistically knows few peers among present-day tenors." (New York Daily News) Mr. Bjoerling' s performances with the Memphis Opera and the Florida Symphony, in which he sang the role of Manrico in II Trovatore were praised by critics as outstanding successes. ''Bjoerling is a handsome figure of a man, a safe nomination for any heroic tenor role, with a well modulated and controlled voice," wrote one reviewer. His performances of Otello at the Stockholm Royal Opera in 1983 were highly acclaimed and cheered by Stockholm audiences and critics. In spring 1984 he again sang the role of Manrico in 11 Trovatore with the Miami Opera and again received high praise from the critics. Mr. Bjoerling returns each season to the United States for recitals and concerts between his many European engagements. Mr. Bjoerling has released six recordings in both Europe and the United States.
