10 Stratford Magazine Fall 2008 Stratford Class of 2008 Senior Mentor Projects The final project for graduating seniors is to complete a Mentor Project. Each student chooses an individual to shadow in a field of interest for them. For three weeks, seniors spend time with their mentors in their professional settings. The project final is a 20-minute presentation to a panel of Stratford faculty members about the experience. Students from the Class of 2008 chose a wide variety of professionals to observe including physicians, chefs, a pilot, print and broadcast journalists, teachers, a nurse, engineers, attorneys, musicians, an architect and many others. Here are three stories from the Class of 2008. I could not have been happier about my senior project. Certainly, I gained a vast amount of knowledge about the recording industry. I urge all upcoming students to find something they are interested in and pursue that project completely. They will be glad they did! The Annual Fund The Annual Fund provides for 3% of the annual operating budget. It helps to bridge the gap between tuition that our families pay each year and the actual cost of educating our students. Annual Fund gifts provide for a vast array of support — professional development for our teachers, technology acquisitions, curriculum improvements and additions, band uniforms, athletic equipment and more. Every single gift is important to the continued success of our school. The Annual Fund Report reflects contributions made to Stratford between June 1, 2007 – May 31, 2008. 24 Stratford 2007-2008 Report of Giving Stratford Report of Giving Excellence Never Rests A Campaign for Stratford Academy he history of Stratford Academy is a history of excellence — and of commit- ment. In our school’s earliest days, many sacrifices were made. The story is told of one of the school’s founding board members, Dr. Bill Shirley, who promised his wife, Bess, a new sofa for their home. But, as it turned out, the sofa was not meant to be, as the Shirleys would continually use the “sofa money” instead to help pay bills at Stratford, so the fledgling school could remain open. tBess Shirley never complained. Nor did the school’s teachers who were at times asked to hold their paychecks. Or the many others who made similar sacrifices. No one minded. Because there was a common cause, a greater good. It was for the children. It’s rare when one can make a lasting impact on the life of a school — but there have been three such significant times in the life of Stratford Academy. Those chal- lenging early years were the first. The second was the move from Coleman Hill to Peake Road. And the third is … now. During this historic opportunity, may a simple sofa serve as a powerful reminder, that we, too, are called to commit. Because, for the best education, for the best future, Excellence Never Rests. efore I left for Rwanda, the question I was asked more often than others was, ‘What makes you want to go to Africa?’ My answer, as ridiculous Bas it sounded, began with a movie. Two years ago, I watched Hotel Rwanda for the first time and when the movie was over, I knew I had to go. I began studying the culture, history, and particularly information about the genocide that occurred in 1994. I was drawn to the people’s suffering in a way that I cannot explain. Stratford Magazine Fall 2008 43 As a young teacher during Desert Storm, Raising Terry Sowell learned the value and importance of corre- sponding with men and wom- en serving in the military. Over her 23-year teaching career, Kids Sowell and her students have adopted numerous soldiers as Who a“pen pals.” In recent years, Sowell l has made a point for her third grade class at Stratford to adopt school alumni serving in the military. They have corresponded with Jason Gross ’97, Erik Walker ’00, and most recently, Casey Phelps ’00. She believes that it is important to instill patriotism in children. Think “I can remember Erik and Casey from their days as high school boys,” says Terry. “Now they are adults and it is amazing to see their transformation into men defending our country.”

After Globally finishing his B.B.A. at Georgia College and State University in 2004, Casey took a posi- tion in logistics with the Army. He has been deployed in Iraq since February 2008. During this past year, Terry’s class began sending notes to Casey Phelps. Casey was so touched, he requested a phone call with the class.

In May, third graders gathered in the head of school’s office for their long distance conference call. Prior to the phone call, Terry impressed upon the students the impor- tance of showing men and women in the military appreciation for their service. The children asked Casey about his favorite Stratford memories. 44 Stratford Magazine Fall 2008 Last winter, two Stratford seventh graders, Morgan Sowell and Matthew Beringer, attended a Steven Curtis Chapman concert. During the show, the number 150 was displayed on a screen behind the stage and as the evening went on the number continued to increase. By the end of the concert, the number read over 600. During the finale, Chapman announced that the rising number represented children worldwide who had become orphaned during the course of the concert. lChapman is a proponent of international adoptions and has founded an organization called Shaohannah’s Hope for families interested in overseas adoptions. Chapman and his wife have adopted three children from China. The oldest, Shaohannah, is his organization’s namesake. The organization provides financial assistance for fami- lies adopting internationally — a process which costs approximately $15,000 per adoption.
