The of the Roman Cornelius and his household. … St. Cornelius the Centurion is the first , non-Jew, to be accepted into the Church.

Fr. Bob’s Briefs

On this Sixth Sunday of Easter, we hear about the Baptism of Cornelius in today’s First Reading, from the . Today’s reading begins with St. Peter entering Cornelius’ house. It is helpful to know and read what precedes today’s reading. We read earlier in the that there was a man in Caesarea named Cornelius, who was a captain in the Roman army regiment called the Italian Cohort. Cornelius was a centurion in the 's Cohors II Italica Civium Romanorum, which was stationed in Caesarea, the capital of Roman Iudaea province, to keep the Pax Romana (Roman Peace). The Acts of the Apostles describes Cornelius as a “devout and -fearing man along with his whole household.” In addition, although he was a pagan Roman soldier, he was known for his good work, gave alms to Jewish people, and prayed to God constantly (Acts 10:3). One day, around three o'clock in the afternoon, he had a vision, in which he clearly saw an of God come in and say to him, "Cornelius!" He stared at the angel in fear and said, "What is it, sir?" The angel answered, "God is pleased with your prayers and works of charity, and is ready to answer you.” The angel instructs the centurion to send his envoys to find St. Peter who was at that point, staying with a Christian tanner named Simon in Joppa. At the same time that the centurion Cornelius received his vision, St. Peter received a vision in which God releases him and all from the strict dietary restrictions of Mosaic Law (Acts 10:10–16). When Cornelius' men arrive, Peter realizes that the vision he received referred to the Roman centurion and all other who wish to convert to the Church. He accompanies Cornelius' men back to Caesarea. When Cornelius sees Peter, he falls at the St. Peter’s feet. This is the point where we begin today’s First Reading. St. Peter teaches Cornelius and his household of ' life, Passion and Resurrection. At that point, the descends on everyone present and Cornelius and other gentiles speak in tongues and praise God. He and his household then accepted Baptism. St. Cornelius the Centurion is the first Gentile, non-Jew, to be accepted into the Church. With the baptism of Cornelius, his whole family and household (all his servants and their families), all Gentiles, non- , were also baptized and entered into the Church. The image that we see is a fresco on the wall of the sacristy of St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome, by Perugia, of St. Peter baptizing Cornelius. The baptism of Cornelius is a fundamentally important event in the history of the Early Church. Prior to him, only Jews had converted to Christianity. The baptism of the Roman centurion Cornelius and his household is connected to today’s . From the Gospel of John today, we hear Jesus say, “"I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and your joy might be complete.” St. Augustine, preaching on this Gospel passage, teaches us, “what is ’s joy in us? And what is our joy, which He says shall be full, but to have fellowship with Him.” The baptism of Cornelius and his household shows us that God extends his friendship to Jews and Gentiles (non-Jews) alike. Jesus desires to become the friend of every person. This is the joy that we are all called to share with the people around us. If we truly want our friends to have joy, then we must bring them Jesus. We must introduce them about Jesus, like St. Peter did with Cornelius, so that they may know the joy of friendship with Jesus. Congratulations to our students from our parochial school and Religious Education program who received their First Holy Communion this Saturday, May 5, 2018. May they come with their parents and families to Jesus their friend every Sunday, and may receiving Jesus in the Eucharist always fill them with joy. May the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of Good Help, help us with her maternal care, and may St. Joseph pray for us. Vivat Jesus! Live Jesus!

Dzisiejsze pierwsze czytanie z Dziejów Apostolskich dotyczy chrztu Korneliusza. Dawał on wielkie jałmużny ludowi i zawsze modlił się do Boga”. Około dziewiątej godziny dnia ujrzał wyraźnie w widzeniu anioła Pańskiego, który wszedł do niego i powiedział: „Korneliuszu!” On zaś wpatrując się w niego z lękiem zapytał: „Co, panie?” Wraca z ludźmi Korneliusza do Cezarei. Ujrzawszy nadchodzącego Piotra, Korneliusz pada mu do stóp. Serdecznie gratulujemy dzieciakom z naszej szkoły parafialnej oraz uczestnikom naszego Programu katechetycznego, którzy w minioną sobotę, 5 maja, przystąpili do swojej I Komunii Świętej.

Vivat Iesus! Chwała Jezusowi!
